Two movies. Two lenses. One drive-in sensibility for witchcraft on screen.

The Witch Movie Project is a horror movie podcast hosted by Just Blane (CEO, Ride The Wave Media) and Courtney Pearl (host of Practically Magick, and a real-world practitioner of paganism and witchcraft). Blane brings the drive-in movie host tradition to witch cinema — the same lineage as legends like Joe Bob Briggs, who turned schlocky monster movies and cult horror into genuine film scholarship one host segment at a time. Every episode pairs two films built around witches, witchcraft, or folk horror, and Blane digs into the production history, casting drama, and behind-the-scenes trivia the way only a lifelong drive-in horror obsessive can, while Courtney separates Hollywood's version of magic from the real thing — spellcraft, ritual, and the actual history behind the myths.

This isn't a straight movie review show. From bizarre rituals and eerie traditions to powerful commentary on community and belief systems, this episode is a must-listen for horror buffs and film geeks alike. Trust us, you won't want to miss it!

Chapters:

(00:00) Ride the wave and novel daybreak present the witch movie project

(05:14) One of these folk horror movies started this whole thing, right

(08:14) The first movie we're talking about is the Wicker man from 1977

(08:44) Christopher Lee says this is his favorite movie to be in

(10:21) Edward Woodward plays Sergeant Howie on the Scottish island in the movie

(12:15) When Sergeant Howey is interviewing people, he cannot get a straight answer

(16:13) You got the naked dance from her. Interesting. I do think the movie was banned for a little bit

(19:20) Green man is something that's very well known in neo pagan circles

(19:55) A lot of the stuff in this movie is from actual pagan influences

(21:37) Now, now, what other symbology or symbolism did you catch in the movie

(24:44) You see symbols of death and rebirth all through this movie

(27:04) There is this huge clash between religion and culture in this movie

(32:25) No animals were harmed in the making of this movie, however

(33:55) The movie is a powerful commentary on clash of beliefs versus power of community

(35:50) Wicker is sticking to his christian beliefs even to the very end

(37:06) This is a breakup movie. It's tough to watch. I enjoy this movie, but not in a joyful way

(37:57) Pay attention to the mural in the opening sequence and any murals

(43:10) The film doesn't steer away from showing graphic sexual content

(43:41) Florence Pugh gives an incredible performance in Danny

(44:12) Christian makes Danny feel like she does not belong on this trip

(46:04) There's lots of foreshadowing in the beginning of the film

(47:56) So they land in Stockholm and then have a four hour drive to Horga

(51:54) I love how he was the one that was all about, everybody do this

(52:17) The movie talks about making offerings to the sun a lot in this movie

(57:07) The movie opens in a barn where children sleep from zero to 18

(59:51) A test to pa is a ritual of elderly being let go on purpose

(01:01:19) Number nine is really significant in mythology. So the number nine shows up a lot

(01:04:56) This is one of the most disturbing scenes you'll see in a movie ever

(01:08:33) Danny goes from being unwanted, isolated, undrafted to team member

(01:12:22) This is where you get into some of the more inhumane practices

(01:16:00) This is definitely a movie you gotta watch twice. It sticks with you after you watch

(01:20:10) It seemed to me that Danny was just getting pulled along

(01:22:34) You either get a happy ending or you don't, Wickerman says

(01:27:02) Um, the friend that pulls her into the dance is wearing this on her tunic

(01:27:38) These two movies stand out to me as significant examples of folk horror

(01:30:49) Is this real? Is there somewhere doing this kind of stuff

(01:33:51) Lord Summer Isle plays a very hierarchical role in Wicker Man

(01:34:38) This is where the people at home can vote on a movie

In this spine-chilling episode of The Witch Movie Project, join hosts Courtney Pearl and Just Blane as they delve into the eerie world of "Suspiria." This week, they dissect both the original 1977 masterpiece by Dario Argento and the 2018 reimagining by Luca Guadagnino. Prepare for an in-depth discussion on the unsettling visuals, haunting soundtracks, and the layered storytelling that makes each version a unique experience.

From the vibrant, technicolor nightmare of Argento’s film to the multi-layered, politically charged atmosphere of Guadagnino’s interpretation, Courtney and Blane leave no stone unturned. They explore the intricate dance sequences, the disturbing murder scenes, and the deep lore of the three mothers, all while drawing comparisons and highlighting the distinct elements that set these films apart.

Chapters:

(00:00) Ride the wave and novel daybreak by Crescent communities present the Witch movie project

(01:39) Let's go to this episode. Let's get to these two movies

(01:58) Suspiria is a 1970 horror movie by Dario Argento

(06:10) Both 1977 and 2018 versions have giallo style shots

(09:44) That was the most disturbing murder scene in a movie ever

(11:52) We get to Susie's first day at the academy and it's weird

(14:34) So Susie moves into Olga's apartment and weird stuff starts happening

(18:08) The maggots falling from the ceiling sent me running from the theater

(19:11) Now, now let's talk about the men that we see in this movie

(23:39) The dog eats Daniel, which is really graphic and nice and graphic

(24:29) There's a high body count for a movie here

(28:52) My only criticism of the 1977 version is that the folklore is glossed over

(35:24) Do you think they were using Sarah's body for the ritual

(38:14) There was multiple languages involved on the set. A lot of scenes had no audio dubbed later

(40:37) Now we're at the climax. It's literally, boom, the climax

(41:51) There was a lot of propaganda against witchcraft and against witches over the centuries

(43:28) I really loved going to the 2018 version and being able to see more layers

(45:26) I've already messed up and called the 2018 remake a remake

(48:28) The mirrors come into play later in the movie. And I think they use the mirrors, too

(50:51) I had to shut my eyes for most of it. It was too real

(51:26) The 2018 movie Suspiria is definitely multilayered

(56:30) I second guessed whether this actor is an older man or not

(57:15) Tilda Swinton plays Doctor Clipper in the new film

(58:47) This really is an Oscar performance. And how did the makeup team not win an Oscar for this

(01:01:49) Did you notice anything connected to witchcraft in either of these movies

(01:03:07) This movie is quite a bit longer than the first one

(01:06:41) Suzy is preparing to give up her body to Helena Marcos

(01:10:24) Doctor Klepper already suspects because he's talking to Susie and Sarah

(01:12:17) There was very little CGI used in the Vogue dance scene

(01:16:09) Mother Marcos ends up being actually mother suspirium

(01:20:29) There's an after credit scene that leaves viewers wondering what happens next

(01:23:44) 2018 had Tom York from Radiohead score for a movie

(01:28:08) Next week we have much tamer witch movies

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite version of "Suspiria" and share your thoughts with us on social media. All this leads up to our big event on October 26, presented by Novel Daybreak by Crescent Communities. <itunes:title>The Wicker Man & Midsommar: Folk Horror's DNA</itunes:title>

The Witch Movie Project: The Wicker Man & Midsommar

Folk horror didn't start with Midsommar. It started in 1973 with The Wicker Man, and this episode traces that lineage through two films that ask the same question: what happens when belief systems collide?

Just Blane and Courtney Pearl break down Christopher Lee's favorite performance, the real mythology hidden in every frame, and why these movies work as both horror and commentary on community. The Wicker Man presents Sergeant Howie's Christian faith against an island's pagan rituals. Midsommar flips the script: instead of resistance, Danny finds belonging in a community that offers what her own family never could.

Both films are built on genuine folklore. The maypole, the Wheel of the Year, the runes carved into every surface, the Ättestupa ritual, these are rooted in actual Nordic and Celtic tradition, even when the movies push them toward the horrific. Courtney decodes the symbolism frame by frame: the Othala rune meaning home and inheritance, the costume design that transforms Danny from outsider to accepted member, the foreshadowing woven into murals and songs.

The real tension isn't supernatural. It's about isolation, belonging, and whether community can justify anything. One character resists. One surrenders. Both endings leave you unsettled.

      <itunes:title>Suspiria 1977 vs 2018: Dario Argento's Witch Masterpiece</itunes:title>

The Witch Movie Project, Episode 2: Suspiria (1977 & 2018)

Dario Argento's 1977 Suspiria and Luca Guadagnino's 2018 reimagining are not remakes, they are two distinct visions of the same dark premise: a dance academy concealing a coven of witches who harvest human sacrifice to sustain their power. This episode unpacks both films side by side, tracing how a single story transforms across decades of filmmaking.

The 1977 original uses technicolor distortion, the Goblins' unsettling score, and giallo-style cinematography to disorient viewers into Susie Banyan's confusion. Every frame feels like a stage set, every shadow deliberate. The newer film adds layers, political history woven through Berlin's past, the revelation that Susie herself is Mother Suspirium reincarnate, and Tilda Swinton's transformative triple role. Tom Yorke's Radiohead score replaces the Goblins' eerie drones with something equally haunting.

Both films explore the same recurring theme: belonging. Susie doesn't flee the coven, she discovers she was always meant to be there. Like the previous episode's Midsommar, the horror lies not in external threat but in the protagonist's gradual recognition that this dark world is home.

The hosts examine real folklore versus invented mythology, the craft of building suspense through long, unsettling shots, and why Dakota Johnson's years of dance training matter to the film's visceral power.

<itunes:title>Teen Witch & The Craft: Robin Lively Interview</itunes:title>

The Witch Movie Project: Teen Witch & The Craft

Two teenage witch movies, seven years apart, reveal far more in common than their surface differences suggest. This week, Blane and Courtney break down the 1989 camp classic Teen Witch alongside the 1996 dark-edged The Craft, uncovering unexpected parallels in how both films center young women discovering power at the exact moment they feel most powerless.

Teen Witch opens with pure 80s energy, MTV aesthetics, that unforgettable "High School Blues" rap, and a girl who finds a magical necklace that lets her reshape herself. But beneath the glitter and glamour, Louise faces the same core question as every teen witch: does this power feel real if it's not actually me?

The Craft takes that same premise into darker territory. Four high school outsiders invoke real Wiccan practices, calling the corners, chanting in perfect love and perfect trust, to reclaim agency in a world that treats them as disposable. Courtney breaks down the actual symbolism: the pentacle, the rule of three, braid magic as genuine spell work. She also reveals what happened on set when they filmed the invocation scenes, strange occurrences the director couldn't explain.

Both films grapple with the same truth: witchcraft, in these stories, isn't about evil. It's about girls finding a language for power when the world offers them none.

Plus: an exclusive interview with Robin Lively, who played Louise in Teen Witch.

<itunes:title>The Love Witch & Autopsy of Jane Doe: Folk Horror 2016</itunes:title>

The Love Witch & The Autopsy of Jane Doe: Power, Torture, and the Cost of Desire

Two 2016 horror films, two naked witches, two radically different outcomes. This week on The Witch Movie Project, Blane and Courtney Pearl unpack the visual feast of The Love Witch alongside the suffocating dread of The Autopsy of Jane Doe, films that arrived within months of each other yet occupy opposite ends of the witch-horror spectrum.

The Love Witch is a meticulously crafted homage to 1960s cinema, built from Thoth tarot symbolism and color theory that separates masculine sun energy from feminine moon energy. Samantha Robinson's Elaine is a woman emerging from mental health crisis, using witchcraft to manufacture love through desperation, and the film asks whether her power is genuine empowerment or a trap she's building for herself. The tarot cards she pulls (Five of Cups, The Tower, Three of Swords) telegraph emotional ruin before it arrives.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe inverts the formula entirely. A corpse that never moves, a 17th-century witch tortured into existence by the very people who feared her. Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch navigate an isolated morgue where the weather itself becomes a character, where isolation breeds terror, and where the discovery of Leviticus verses and ritualistic wounds finally names what they're facing. Steven King called it worthy of Alien.

Both films weaponize nakedness, symbolism, and the female body, but one uses it as seduction, the other as evidence of systematic torture.

      <itunes:title>Kiki's Delivery Service & Howl's Moving Castle: Miyazaki's Witch</itunes:title>

The Witch Movie Project: Kiki's Delivery Service & Howl's Moving Castle

Blane and Courtney break through anime skepticism to unpack two Hayao Miyazaki masterpieces that redefine what witches actually are: women in total control of themselves.

Kiki's Delivery Service follows a 13-year-old witch leaving home to find her place in the world. She builds a life through relationships and small acts of service, only to lose her powers when self-doubt creeps in. Courtney connects this to real dream psychology, the falling sensation mirrors what happens when you stop believing in yourself. The film's real magic isn't supernatural; it's Kiki's refusal to stay broken.

Howl's Moving Castle takes the opposite approach: Sophie starts meek and afraid, then wakes up cursed as a 90-year-old woman. That curse becomes her liberation. No longer scared of what men think, she walks into danger, commands respect, and transforms everyone around her, including the witch who cursed her. By the film's end, Sophie has broken her own curse and Howl's, not through spells but through confidence and compassion.

Both films reject the horror-movie witch archetype. Instead, they show witchcraft as self-determination: Kiki mastering her craft, Sophie refusing victimhood, Ursula creating art in the woods. Miyazaki's animation, the detail in every frame, the chicken-legged castle callback to Baba Yaga, rewards rewatching.

The episode builds toward the October 26th live screening at Novel Daybreak, where audiences vote on the next pairing.

The Witch Movie Project: Practical Magic & The Witches of Eastwick

Two films, two visions of female power. This episode pairs the 1998 cult classic Practical Magic with George Miller's 1987 supernatural comedy The Witches of Eastwick, exploring how cinema has reimagined witchcraft across decades.

Practical Magic centers the Owens sisters' generational curse and the realization that sisterhood, not romantic love, breaks the spell. Blane unpacks the film's production history: Nicole Kidman's 80-take perfectionism (fresh off 18 months with Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut) clashing with Sandra Bullock's two-take efficiency, the witch consultant who allegedly cursed the set, and the iconic midnight margarita scene that spawned real-world viewing parties. Courtney decodes the actual mythology woven through the script: the invocation of Hekate, the goddess of witchcraft and portal-keeper; the spell-craft as intention-infusion rather than ingredient-obsession; and how the film's central message, you don't have to behave, you don't have to follow someone else's rules, resonates as genuine liberation theology.

The Witches of Eastwick flips the script entirely. Three liberated women conjure Darryl Van Horn (Jack Nicholson in peak form), only to discover he's the devil incarnate. The film becomes a study in seduction and reclamation: Van Horn initially liberates them from societal constraints, but they must ultimately liberate themselves from his authority. Courtney connects this to the historical witch trials, replacing "the devil" with "independence", and explores how women accused of witchcraft were simply those who refused to live by others' rules.

The Witch Movie Project: Return to Oz & Hereditary

Two films, two visions of what happens when family secrets run deeper than love can reach.

This episode pairs a cult classic that dared to be genuinely unsettling with a modern masterpiece that uses grief as a weapon. Return to Oz strips away the Judy Garland comfort and delivers the darker vision L. Frank Baum actually wrote, a film so visually disturbing it nearly ended its young star's career. Then we move to Hereditary, where a mother's loss becomes the entry point for something far more sinister: a multi-generational cult operating inside a single family, summoning the demon Paimon through ritual, sacrifice, and careful orchestration.

Blane brings production trivia and the Joe Bob Briggs spirit of horror fandom. Courtney decodes the real folklore buried inside the fiction, runes, sigils, the actual mythology of Paimon from the Book of Solomon, and the crucial distinction between a coven and a cult. We discuss why Hereditary isn't technically a witch movie, but a demon-summoning nightmare that uses witchcraft aesthetics to hide something far worse. We talk about Toni Collette's Oscar-snubbed performance, the three severed heads as ritual payment, and why this film sticks with you long after the credits roll.

Both films ask the same question: what if the horror was already inside the family?
