Valley Presbyterian Church has an international reputation as a destination wedding setting, but for some 350 people in the Bay area, it’s more than a wedding, or even a Sunday, destination: it’s our home.

Because of our proximity to Stanford and Silicon Valley, a lot of us work in academia or technology. Because of our love of and passion for the arts, many of us are working artists, writers, and musicians – or aspiring to be! We follow Christ in the teachings of the Reform tradition (PCUSA), though individually, our paths vary. What we share is a longing for God, a connection to the community, and meaningful ways to serve the wider world.

Even though we are a destination church, we believe that we are called to risk the Spirit-led journey. And we are really one another’s traveling companions and support team along the way.

This Sunday, we’ll explore the hope we have in Christ and what it means to hold onto that hope in a world that often feels uncertain. As 1 Peter reminds us, people of faith are called not only to keep hope to ourselves, but to be ready to give an account of it — to name it, offer it, and point others toward the hope that lives in us.

We’ll reflect on what it means to be people who carry hope openly and faithfully, especially when the ground beneath us feels unstable or the future feels unclear. Together, we’ll consider how God’s hope gives us strength, steadiness, and a message worth sharing with the world around us.

This Sunday, we invite you to join us for a meaningful time of worship and reflection around the theme The Flow of Belonging. Belonging is such a powerful word. It is one of our core human desires, something we all seek relentlessly, and a force that can shape both good and harm. We use belonging to welcome, but too often it can also be used to exclude. In this message, we’ll reflect on the beautiful truth that the belonging God offers is different: it is good, it never ends, it leaves the door open, and it keeps setting an extra seat at the table over and over again.

We are especially grateful to welcome the Rev. Ron Werner to preach this Sunday. Ron has spent much of his ministry building understanding, welcome, and bridges of belonging, including through his work with the Together Lab in Portland, Oregon. His life and ministry have helped create spaces where people can experience deeper connection in their church, families, and communities. Through his message, we’ll be challenged and encouraged to live out belonging more fully in our own lives and to help build a more welcoming world.

Come ready to be inspired, encouraged, and reminded that God’s invitation is always open.

It is from those who have suffered most deeply that we learn about the deep goodness that is rooted in us as God’s image-bearers. But suffering is a complicated topic. While it does good work in us, we aren’t meant to be gluttons for punishment. And when it suffering surfaces as injustice, we aren’t meant to just accept it.

This week we’ll look at one of the more complicated passages of Scripture in 1 Peter 2 and consider what courage in the face of suffering looks like. I hope you’ll join us!

Also, a reminder that after the service, we will be holding a congregational meeting to elect our new officers (deacons, elders, endowment and nominating committees) and to vote on pastoral terms of call (compensation package). Please plan to stay after worship for approximately 15 minutes if you are a member of VPC.

In this world of suffering, may you and may we be lights of goodness, kindness, truth and joy.
