I want to tell you what this podcast is, and just as importantly, what it is not.

It is not a podcast about managing your feelings. If that is what you came for, there are shelves of them, and some are useful, and none of them have solved the thing you are actually carrying or you would not be holding this one.

This is a podcast about what sits upstream of your feelings.

For years I watched sincere believers do everything right and still lose. They prayed. They served. They came to church on the Sundays when it was hard to come. And they still woke up heavy, still snapped at people they loved, still carried something at three in the morning that no sermon had ever touched. And almost every one of them had quietly concluded the same thing: there must be something wrong with my faith.

There was nothing wrong with their faith. Nobody had ever told them where the work happens.

Scripture is not vague about this. It tells us to take every thought captive and judge it by the obedience of Christ. It tells us what to think about true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report. It tells us that we are transformed by the renewing of the mind, and it says that a mind set one way produces death while a mind set another way produces life and peace. That is not poetry. That is a mechanism, and God wrote it down long before anyone had a laboratory to confirm it.

And confirm it they have. We now know that the human brain reorganizes itself across an entire lifetime, forming and strengthening connections based on what a person repeatedly does, thinks, and rehearses. The world calls it neuroplasticity. Paul called it the renewing of your mind, and he commanded it , which is itself the proof that it is possible, because God does not command the impossible.

So here is the claim this podcast will make, and it will make it eighteen times in eighteen different ways:

You do not fix your feelings by fighting your feelings. You judge the thought at the gate, according to the Word of God, and the feelings follow.

There are holy thoughts and there are unholy ones. There are holy emotions and there are unholy ones. And the second kind grows out of the first kind, the way fruit grows out of a root — which means the fight you have been losing at the level of your emotions was never winnable there.

Three things before you start.

This will take longer than you want. I am not going to promise you three weeks. Patterns laid down over decades come apart slowly, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. But slow is not the same as stuck, and you are going to see the difference.

Some of this is not spiritual. Some heaviness has a body underneath it, sleep, illness, grief, chemistry, wounds that need a trained professional. I will say that more than once in these pages. Getting help is not a failure of faith, and any teaching that says otherwise is cruelty with a verse attached.

And you are not in trouble. Whatever has been running in your mind, whatever surfaced in you this week that you would not repeat out loud; God came to Cain with a question and a way out before Cain ever asked Him for anything. He is that same God with you. He is not disappointed to find you reading this.

Let us go find out what is standing at your door.

You have prayed about it. You have repented of it. It is still there at three in the morning. Unholy Emotions argues that fear, anger, shame, lust, envy, and despair are not random weather. Each one grows from a thought you accepted without examining it and rehearsed until it felt like truth. The fight is not at the feeling. It is at the gate, before the feeling forms. Kevin Ortiz takes you there with Scripture, a Thought Audit at the end of every chapter, and a 40-day plan to take one lie captive and replace it with one verse. The mind working against you can be rebuilt. God said so, and He does not command the impossible.

Sometimes you wake up carrying a heaviness you cannot explain. Nothing obvious is wrong, yet anxiety, anger, fear, or sadness is already there. Through the story of Cain, we see God asking, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?” The emotion was visible, but God went deeper, pointing to something “at the door” that Cain needed to recognize and rule over. What we feel may be the output of something that has been developing beneath the surface for a long time. Our inner life is shaped by what we repeatedly experience, believe, rehearse, and absorb. But not every struggle is purely spiritual; sleep, illness, medication, grief, hormones, and emotional wounds can also play a role, and seeking appropriate help is not a failure of faith. The invitation is to stop hiding or simply fighting the feeling and instead bring it honestly before God. What is standing at your door? Naming it is the beginning of learning how to walk in freedom.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

A stronghold can be an argument or conclusion that has been repeated so often that it stands higher in our minds than what God has said. The call is to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. The story of Eve shows how a simple question can become an argument against God's Word, while Jesus shows us another way: “It is written.” When a thought comes, we can ask, Is it true? Is it Christ’s? Where is it taking me? Instead of hosting thoughts that lead us away from truth, we can recognize them, confront them with Scripture, and refuse to let them become our master. Freedom begins when we stop treating every thought as truth and learn to take it captive.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

      <itunes:title>CHAPTER 4 : Where Thoughts Come From</itunes:title>

Not every thought that enters your mind is necessarily yours. Scripture points to different sources: your own desires, the influence of the world, spiritual opposition, and the Spirit of God. James 1 shows how our own desires can become temptation, while 1 John 2 describes the pressures of the world. Ephesians 6 reminds us that spiritual forces are also involved. The key is learning to identify the source instead of automatically accepting every thought or blaming yourself for thoughts you never wanted. Peter’s response to Jesus shows how easily a thought can sound loving and reasonable while still pointing away from God’s purposes. At the same time, not every struggle is spiritual attack; sometimes the issue is an appetite we have been feeding, exhaustion, or another ordinary human need. The goal is accuracy: take responsibility for what you choose to house, while refusing to carry guilt for thoughts you never chose.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Spiritual growth is not an instant event; it is a trained capacity built through repeated use. Hebrews 5:14 describes maturity as having our spiritual senses exercised through practice. Just as repeated footsteps create a path, repeated thoughts and responses strengthen familiar patterns in us. That means falling back into an old reaction does not erase the progress already made. A lapse is one walk on the old path, not a return to zero. David’s experience with the lion and the bear shows how God often builds strength in ordinary, unseen moments. Before facing Goliath publicly, David had already been practicing courage in private. In the same way, the small choices nobody sees are preparing us for the moments that will test us. Do not let one failure become a verdict about your future. Keep walking the new path, because transformation is built through faithful repetition over time.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Each step seemed small, but over time he became deeply attached to what he had once only observed. The invitation is to examine what we regularly allow through the front door of our soul and notice what it is teaching us to rehearse. You may not be able to control everything you encounter, but you can learn to guard what you allow to stay.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Listen to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Fear can make us experience a tragedy before it ever happens. We imagine the accident, the loss, the hospital room, or the worst possible outcome, and our bodies respond as though the disaster were already real. But fear is often a rehearsed story rather than a revelation. Second Timothy 1:7 reminds us that God gives power, love, and self-control, while 1 John 4:18 shows that perfect love casts out fear. The question beneath fear is often not simply, “What if this happens?” but, “If it does happen, will God still be with me?” Elijah’s story shows that fear is not always answered with immediate correction. When he was exhausted and overwhelmed, God first gave him sleep, food, and water.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Anger itself is not the problem. Ephesians 4 says, “Be angry, and don’t sin,” but warns us not to let anger remain long enough to become a foothold. Anger is an immediate response to something wrong, while bitterness is what happens when that anger is stored, rehearsed, and repeatedly revisited. Over time, the original offense may stay the same, but the story we tell about it can grow, assigning motives and details that were never there. Bitterness can feel like justice, but the debt we keep collecting is paid by us, not by the person who hurt us.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Joseph refused to remain near the temptation and eventually ran, even though doing so cost him his freedom. The practical invitation is to change the conditions that feed temptation before the moment arrives, establish boundaries in advance, bring appropriate accountability into the struggle, and refuse to let shame become part of the cycle. The battle is often won or lost long before the moment of temptation, in what we consume, where we go, and what we have already decided.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Envy begins when someone else receives what we have been praying for, and instead of simply grieving our own lack, we start keeping a scorecard. We compare their life with ours, measure their advantages, and eventually question whether God has been fair to us. Psalm 73 gives us Asaph’s honest struggle: he became envious of the prosperity of others and nearly lost his footing. But when he entered God’s presence and considered the bigger picture, his perspective changed. The problem was not simply what others had; it was the scoreboard he had been using to measure his own life. Saul shows what happens when comparison is allowed to take over. One song celebrating David’s success became a scoreboard that Saul carried for the rest of his life. Asaph chose another path: he brought his envy to God, refused to spread it, changed his perspective, and discovered that God Himself was his portion. Your life is not measured by what someone else has received. Their portion is theirs, yours is yours, and God remains faithful to both.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Shame can keep replaying an old failure until it feels like a permanent verdict: What I did is what I am. But Romans 8:33–34 points to a different courtroom. God is the One who justifies, Christ died and rose again, and He is interceding for us. Forgiveness rests on God’s faithfulness and Christ’s finished work, not on how guilty or forgiven we happen to feel. Guilt says, “I did something bad,” while shame says, “I am something bad.” Conviction points to a specific action and opens a door toward repentance; condemnation simply circles around our identity with no way forward.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

He experienced loss, rejection, and devastation, yet in the middle of the ashes he turned toward God and declared that His mercies are new every morning. Jesus Himself entered deep sorrow in the garden before the cross, showing that heaviness is not automatically a sign of weak faith. When despair comes, question the verdict, focus on the next small step, turn toward God, and refuse to carry tomorrow before it arrives. And when heaviness has a physical or emotional cause, seeking medical or professional help is not spiritual failure.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Philippians 4 gives a better approach: instead of only removing unhealthy thoughts, intentionally fill the mind with what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous, and worthy of praise. Paul wrote these words to a church dealing with real conflict and anxiety, showing that renewing our thoughts is not about escaping problems but learning what to focus on in the middle of them.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

Gratitude is not about forcing yourself to feel thankful. It is a practice that retrains what your mind reaches for when pressure comes. Scripture commands us to give thanks in everything, not for everything, allowing us to acknowledge hardship honestly while still remembering what is true about God. Through David, Jehoshaphat, Paul, and Silas, we see worship happening before the outcome changes. Praise becomes evidence for the mind to remember, strengthening faith when circumstances are difficult. Speaking specific, past-tense testimonies aloud makes gratitude concrete and helps build the reflex of turning toward God before fear takes over.

To read Unholy Emotions, go to Unholy Emotions: How Captured Thoughts Rewire the Heart, the Mind, and the Life on JesusPOD: https://jesuspod.com/api/share?type=podcast&id=Xii9RpNkhFiYWqsVNksY

      <itunes:title>CHAPTER 18 : Holy Emotions: The Fruit of a Guarded Mind</itunes:title>

This episode brings the podcast to its conclusion by showing what happens when a mind has been continually guarded and renewed by God’s Word. The goal is not to stop feeling emotions, but to develop a new default where love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, and self-control become the fruit of a transformed inner life.

Using Galatians 5 and Colossians 3, the episode explains that these qualities are not manufactured by force. They are fruit that grows through ongoing cultivation. As thoughts become aligned with truth, emotions gradually begin to follow.

Stephen’s final moments provide the clearest picture of this transformation. Even while being stoned, he responds with faith, mercy, and forgiveness, revealing that what comes out under pressure is often what has already been cultivated within. His example reminds us that the fruit of a renewed mind can influence people and lives we may never know about.

The episode closes with the central message of the entire podcast: guard your thoughts, judge them by God’s Word, set your mind on what is true, and let your emotions follow. A guarded mind is not the destination; it is the place from which you can finally live.
