Podcast description

Unholy Muses is written and read by Terry Yef, a poet living quietly in Paris who built this whole thing from the soul, not from any wish to profit off it. He isn't chasing an audience so much as he's chasing the truth of what it costs to make something beautiful, and he happens to think you might want to sit with that truth too.

Every week, one beautiful ruined soul. A musician, a poet, a painter, a director, someone who turned their own wreckage into something the world still can't put down. Terry tells you the whole life, the genius and the vice, the love and the damage, the drugs, the obsessions, the nights that never made it into the textbooks. He tells it slow, and he tells it honest, because he believes a life deserves the same patience you'd give a poem.

But he never says the name.

You guess. Down in the comments, you piece together who tonight's ruined muse really is, from the hints buried inside the story, and whoever lands it first, full name, gets crowned at the top of next week's episode.

Unholy Muses is poetic, brutal, occasionally profane, and built to get under your skin, and sometimes, if Terry's done his job right, to make you cry a little before it's over. New episodes weekly, written in Paris, read from the heart, poured out for no other reason than because some stories deserve to be told properly.

Pour something first.

Contains mature themes, strong language, and frank discussion of drug use and mental health. Listener discretion advised.

There is a book almost everyone has read as a child, and almost no one was told the truth about the man who wrote it. Tonight we tell it anyway. A boy who stammered so badly he learned to disappear instead of speak. A man who medicated a lifetime of blinding pain with whatever the corner chemist kept on the shelf, back when that was simply what a person did to survive their own body. A man who loved so hard and so strangely that history still argues, a century and a half later, about what that love actually was, and about the pages someone cut out of his diary with a razor so the rest of us would never fully know.

We are not going to tell you his name. Not because we want to trick you, but because we want you to sit with him a while first, the way you'd sit with someone at a hospital bed, before you decide what you think you know about him.

Somewhere tonight, a parent is reading his fever dream out loud to a child already asleep in their lap, having no idea what was moving through his blood and his conscience while he wrote it, word by careful, trembling word. That is the part of this story that gets me every time I read it back. Not the drugs. Not the mystery. Just a lonely, brilliant, broken man, reaching a hundred and fifty years forward through a page, to land, gently, on your chest, tonight, whether you're ready for it or not.

Guess who he was in the comments if you want to play. But mostly, just listen. Pour something first. Bring someone you love a little closer.

Contains mature themes, strong language, and frank discussion of drug use. Listener discretion advised.

There is a painting almost everyone has seen, and almost no one was ever told the truth about the man who painted it. Tonight we tell it anyway. A boy who grew up visiting his own name carved into a gravestone every Sunday. A failed preacher who loved too deeply for his own church. A man who painted the night sky as though it were thinking. A brother who wrote nearly nine hundred letters, and another brother who answered them with unwavering love.

We are not going to tell you his name. Not because we want to trick you, but because we want you to sit with him first. The way you'd sit beside someone in a quiet room before deciding what history has already told you to believe. We want you to meet the lonely man before the masterpiece, the suffering before the sunflowers, and the heart before the legend.

Listen closely. Follow the clues. Then tell us who you think he is in the comments. The first person to guess the full name correctly will be featured at the beginning of the next episode.
