Wendy Jo Halison was a college senior in California, In 1968, she headed off in her convertible to buy a hair dryer that was on sale. She never made it home, and her murder was not solved for 48 years! When it was finally resolved, it turned out that she was not the only victim of the scum who took her life.

Dale Wells was living his life in South Carolina, and when he met the woman who would become his partner, he was happy to have her in his life. At least, until she became controlling, manipulative, and murderous. Frank Tranter was a 74-year-old retired man living in the Lion Farm Estate in West Midlands, England. His health was seriously failing him, he was nearly blind, and he lived alone in his semi-detached bungalow. All he wanted to do was listen to music and wave at his neighbors out the window. But, no. Along came a group of no-goods who had to take those little pleasures, and everything else, away from Frank.

Our survivor this episode is Monti Niccolo, a 22-year-old who loved hunting, fishing, and California wilderness camping. Wilderness camping can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, but Monti did. He knew very well how to take care of himself. So when he came across two people who had deadly intentions, Monti had to call upon his will to survive. And survive, he did!

My announcement in this episode is that I'm going to be releasing only one episode per month, because I just don't have enough time to research, write, record, edit, and produce more than that on top of my day job and my fixer-upper house. This week I am covering the frustrating case of the murder of Holly Palmer, which took place in Granbury, Texas in November, 1988. Holly was an amazing, ambitious 23 year old and seemingly had only one person who would have had any problems with her. It seems that police and Holly's family all have a strong suspicion of one particular person. So why, then, has no one ever been brought to justice for her horrible murder?

Our survivor this week is an anonymous teenager out of Gwinnett County, Georgia, and her story shows what a strong, courageous young woman she is. She was only 15 when she was groomed on Snapchat by an older male, and she barely survived their first meeting, But she saw him again two years later when she saw him sentenced to 30-to-life for what he did to her.

One question this case raises is how someone is a relatively normal YouTuber wannabe, and 10 months later he's a child rapist and attempted murderer? Regardless of what brought about his transition to a monster, we are here to celebrate the survivor. So, even though we don't know her name, we are sending every good vibe in her direction.

I didn't plan to, but somehow I managed to have one case in each of the two most recent US states: one in Hawaii (became a state on Aug 21, 1959) and the other in Alaska (became a state on Jan 3, 1959).

Hawaii is considered to be a paradise, and to many people, it absolutely is. But for Conrad Maesaka and Patricia Stevens, it may have started out as paradise, but it turned into a nightmare leading to their disappearances.

Through a tip from a guilty conscience, the crime was eventually solved, but that was still not the end of it. Corruption, gambling, organized crime, and a desperate official all combined to prevent Conrad and Patty from getting their justice, even after a jury conviction.

In the end we can recognize that although Conrad and Patty were flawed humans...who isn't??...they were not as flawed as pretty much every other person in this story. And they did not deserve what happened to them.

And then to Alaska, where Robert Atwood headed, at the age of 28, to take over a tiny daily newspaper in Anchorage. Over 50+ years he turned it into one of the largest Alaska dailies, in addition to a myriad of other stellar accomplishments.

But Bob never lost his energy, his leadership, his pluck, nor his love of family. And when his newspaper staff and his daughter were in danger from an irrational attacker, 79-year-old Bob sprang into action to neutralize the threat. And although it made national headlines, humble Bob didn't even put it on the front page the next day.

Yes! I said STORIES. I'm harking back to the Bad Guy / Good Guy days, even in a solo episode, because if i can have an upper story to close the episode, then I will do that.

First up is the senseless murder of 24 year old Susan Schwarz, who was killed in Snohomish County, Washington in 1979. Because of witness intimidation by the perpetrator, it was 32 years before her killer was brought to justice, but in the end, we applaud the witness for speaking up. Susan was a victim of revenge because she tried to help someone else who was also a victim. And she deserves to be remembered for the good, kind, compassionate young woman she was.

I'm closing today with the upper story of Curtescine Foster Lloyd, a 51 year old woman in Edwards, Mississippi who was accosted in her bedroom by a naked man with evil intentions. But Curtescine saw her opportunity and took it. And that would-be rapist regretted the day he ever made his way into her house. Curtescine's testimony had the jury rolling with laughter, so don't miss this episode! (this is where almost all of the cussing comes in)

So, that business out of the way, this episode is a bit of a throwback to the old bad-guy / good-guy format that I still use in collaborations, but I'm both bad and good guy today. Today I bring you three teenagers who showed such strength, bravery, and presence of mind that they prevented the injury or death of people they cared about, or in one case, of complete strangers. Fair warning, these are hard cases to hear and definitely hard cases to narrate, so if you hear the emotion in my voice, you have no idea how many times i had to reread some of these paragraphs until I could get them out without a croak.

Canaan Bower of Las Cruces, New Mexico, was 16 years old when he prevented a kidnapping, or worse, of a family at a gas station. Canaan was a champion heavyweight wrestler, but also an exemplary leader and human being, and his story is important.

Jayden Perkins, of Chicago, Illinois, was 11 years old when he saved his pregnant mom and unborn sibling from almost certain death when his mom's distant ex burst into their home with a knife. Jayden was that child whom everyone adored, who brought light and sunshine into the day of every person he met. His story must be told, so that he will never be forgotten.

Josslyn Millan, of Midvale, Utah, was 13 years old when her world went in an instant from a safe, family environment to absolute terror in a carjacking. Her first thoughts were not for herself, but for her infant sister, and she instinctively did all of the most important things to take control of the situation and get herself and her baby sister Ivey home safely.

As per our regular format, the last story will leave you on a positive note to go out into the world feeling uplifted.

This week's episode is pretty rough and covers a senseless crime against a West Alexandria, Ohio woman who, in February, 1989, was weeks away from giving birth to a son she had already named.

Joy Gayle Morningstar Stewart was one of those rare people who brightened the day of anyone lucky enough to encounter her. When she was brutally murdered for the most disgusting of reasons, her family and loved ones suffered tremendously thereafter.

And when the execution of her killer didn't go quite as intended, it set in motion a whole series of redirections that are still happening today.

Harriet was a woman who made her own life and lived outside the bounds of what society expected of her in the 1950's. She was a creative, an entrepreneur, and a woman ahead of her time. She built a life that she loved, and that included solo travel as she saw fit. Unfortunately, on one of her trips to Mexico City, Mexico, she came into contact with a predator who used Mexico City as his hunting grounds and attacked or killed numerous other women.

When you see furniture or decorations that are woven from pandanus leaves, you can thank Harriet for being one of the very first who popularized the style; when you see themed Christmas trees, she was one of the first to do that, too.

Harriet Ann Eckman Hicks was an extraordinary person, a woman who didn't sit and wait for permission to make her life what she wanted it to be. And Harriet deserves to be remembered.

David Alexander was a nice Irishman living in Ontario, Canada. He was a good dad, a good husband, and carried the secret that his wife abused him. David still loved his wife Christine, but had come to the conclusion that he couldn't 'fix' her. She, like countless other abusers, decided that if he wouldn't stay with her, she couldn't let him live.

This episode talks about the not-uncommon but rarely reported crime of husband abuse, and how Canada's Divorce Act makes it possible for abusers to sue their victims for spousal support!! Crazy!!

This collaboration with MaryAnne from Social Detective is intense, and also longer than my normal episodes, see time stamps below.

MaryAnne brings us the infuriating (no joke--this will make you angry) case of the Fager Family murders in Wichita, Kansas. Mary Fager's husband Phillip and both of her daughters, Kelli and Sherri, were senselessly murdered between Christmas and New Year's eve in 1987. All the evidence pointed to one person. This person was caught, arrested, and brought to trial. But if you assume that means there was justice....well, you'd better hear the whole story.

Beth follows with a difficult survivor story of a young Georgia mother who was nearly murdered by her ex-boyfriend's attempted murder/suicide. But Jalen Morris, although she suffered immensely from what her attacker did in his final acts, rose above what most people could accomplish. Gravely injured, she shielded her six-week-old baby from gunfire, and managed to save herself and her infant boy from the baby's deranged father.

The strong and beautiful Morris family is doing everything they can to be independent, but horrible crimes like this one have far-reaching effects on a family's financial structure.

Rosemary Shayotovich Swiger Starry thought of nothing except the safety of her bedridden husband and her eight children when their Christmas tree caused a house fire in the early morning hours of December 26, 1961. Rosemary's story made headlines across the country that year, but her selfless bravery deserves to be remembered today.

Also, please take this as a reminder to check your decorations and electrical devices to prevent a house fire--and make sure your family never find themselves in this terrifying situation. Only a few minutes of your time could save someone's life.

My case this week was a senseless, tragic, and random act of violence towards a young woman who was going to do great things in her life. Sharon Galligan was only weeks away from embarking on her semester abroad when she was a junior at the University of Massachusetts. Her life was extinguished in a mall parking lot just before she headed home for the Christmas break in 1989.

Sharon was the casualty of an arbitrary decision by a man with a victim complex, and since there was no connection between them, it took years before police found out who had committed this disgusting crime against a lovely young person with her whole life ahead of her.

Please think about Sharon and her family as you prepare for whatever holidays you celebrate.

This episode comes out the day after Thanksgiving, so I hope you're all stuffed to the gills and feeling grateful about the good things in your lives. Although every one of us has our personal struggles, as Jason Isbell says, "you should know, compared to people on a global scale, our kind has had it relatively easy."

But for this episode I was lucky enough to collaborate again with my friend Lyndon from Murder at Bedtime with Lyndon and the Exiled Yellowbelly. Links to his channels and podcast are below.

Lyndon brought us a heartbreaking case out of Sheffield in 2012: the senseless and brutal murder of Alan Greaves. Alan was a pillar of his community, a strong and loving family man, and was generous and kind beyond words. There was no reason anything should have happened to Alan, as it was a random attack during his walk to the church to play the organ for the Christmas Eve mass. The loss to his community and his family were devastating, and we both got pretty worked up about this case.

Beth follows with the survival story of Richard Underwood, Jr. in Hillsboro, Oregon in 1997. Richard was working at his family's Christmas tree lot when the family was attacked by a swarm of high school boys specifically out to cause trouble. This case was maddening in its aftermath, but we have to focus on the Herculean efforts of Richard Jr. to come back from life-threatening injuries and find his way back to a meaningful and satisfying life.

Deb went big with her case this week, in the tragic downfall, crimes, and untimely death of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez. He did some terrible things over a number of years, but Deb shows us the double-edged sword of the life that made him both wealthy and reckless. She elaborates on underlying factors and influences that helped send Aaron in the wrong direction. But whatever the reasons he did the things he did, by Aaron's hand, Odis Lloyd was needlessly killed in cold blood.

Beth follows up with a survivor story from 1986. Laurie Melanson was living in small town New York and working in a challenging and fulfilling career. When she met John Brown, it didn't take long for her to realize he wasn't the right guy for her. After she broke it off, though, John became obsessed and violent, assaulting Laurie, stalking her, and finally attempting to kill them both in a murder-suicide. But she was stronger and more determined than he thought she would be, and she fought her way back and used her experience to help people who really needed her understanding.

This week is a solo Just One B, episode, but I'm still bringing you two stories. But since this is a Halloween episode, neither case has a happy or uplifting ending. Apologies for breaching the format, but these two cases are important and I wanted to share them both.

The common themes of these two stories are that both took place on Halloween in the 1980's, both were in California, and both cases resulted in the death sentence for the perpetrators. You may have heard of the second case, but probably not the first.

The first is the story of the events leading up to John K Stopher's senseless murder in his own shower on Halloween, 1986, and how the criminal who killed him tried to use John's own private life as an excuse for why he did it. The man who was responsible also murdered another woman, Billie Fae Jones, just so he could steal her van as part of his plans for his attack on John and John's girlfriend Rosa.

The second is the horrific murder of Doreen Rae Hitchens Ebert, who was 8 months pregnant when she was literally slaughtered in the doorway of her own home on Halloween, 1984. This is a hard one to listen to, but I will warn you before I give as toned-down a description of the violence as I can while still expressing the sheer brutality of this crime.

This week I had the pleasure of working again with Andy from Picture the Scene Podcast, with whom we also collaborated on Episode 41. Rachael was unable to join us, but Andy brought us a case from the UK, detailing the horrible domestic violence murder of Dawn Walker. This murder was, unfortunately, predictable, but the circumstances are beyond tragic. Dawn was a wonderful person who was loved by everyone who knew her, and she deserved far better.

My case this week is the survivor story of Py Bateman. Py was a revolutionary related to women's self-defense, as the world in the 1960's and 1970's was becoming an ever more dangerous place for women. She saw her peers being given outdated and dangerous advice related to personal safety, and took it upon herself to teach women how to fight back when she opened the Feminist Karate Union. The acronym FKU may or may not have been coincidental. Wink. And when she had to use her own methods to save herself, she came away knowing she was doing the right thing. Py is a warrior, and she taught hundreds of other women how to have the discipline and confidence to be warriors, too!

This week I have brought in a guest host who is one of my oldest friends--we went to college together in 1821! Okay, it was a few years after that, but we've literally been friends since I was 18. That was even before I started the BnB!!

Buckeye Don bravely took on co-hosting duties today, and he brought us a hella interesting case. Don is sharing the story around the origin and the investigation of the man known in New York City in the 1940's and 1950's as the Mad Bomber.

George Metesky started out with a legitimate complaint against how he was treated, but oh BOY did he take it so much too far.

Beth follows up with a survivor story a little bit different from many that we've shared before. This is an entire family, three of whom were physically attacked and could have been killed by a home invader. But three of these family members: Joy Darrow, Steven Pratt, and daughter Tracy Baim, all went on to be extraordinary journalists and to set an example of how to love and respect all people for who they are.

And mother Joy and daughter Tracy accomplished something extra-special together that will never be forgotten.

This week, I was lucky enough to be able to finish editing my collaboration with Courtney and Patrick from Evil Pudding Podcast, These two put together an amazing, detail-packed podast, and if you're not listening to them, you should be.

Courtney brings us the unbelievable survival story of Illinois teenager Ashley Reeves, who was groomed from a young age and nearly killed by her former teacher. You'll be both angry and amazed by this incredible story!!

If you hear the fluctuations in the sound quality, I'm sorry, but if you hang around for the bloopers, you'll understand what happened. Plus you'll get to hear about Coconut the Great Pyrenees's nightmare and Jackson the bulldog's snoring problem. This episode was a real challenge because of the technical issues, but it's a good one, and I'm really proud of it.

She was a pretty typical teenager, but after a fight with her mom about an older boy, Cammi ran away. Cammi's family were frantic to find her and bring her home, but the 19-year-old her 'friend' asked to look after her took that possibility off the table. Her murder was horrific and cruel, and seems likely to have taken place because of a childish fantasy the perpetrator had held in his mind for years.

Please hear Cammi's story, and keep in your hearts all the distraught families of runaways. Her family loved her. Her family wanted her home. She really didn't grasp how much she was loved, even though they showed it with the care they tried to give her.

This loss was tragic and brutal and devastating. Rest in peace, Cammi.

Tiffany generously offered to be our bad guy this week, and she brought one doozy of a story--Bobbie Sue Terrell, an Illinois transplant living in Florida. Terrell was a mentally ill nurse who was most likely responsible for over a dozen deaths of patients in health care facilities where she worked over the years.

These cases are the stuff of nightmares to people who need to have their loved ones in a care facility.

Beth follows up with a second straight episode coming from Australia! We have two inspiring survivors of an ill-planned, evil home invasion where there were four potential victims in the house.

But James Myers and Luke Convery overcame a million obstacles and setbacks, to survive and come away from the experience with love in their hearts and positive outlooks. Along with the bullets they both still have in their heads.

This week's episode covers a sad case I'm confident you've never heard before unless you're from the Schuylkill, PA area. Ruth Miller Coffey was in a loving, happy marriage with William Coffey, III. They truly adored one another, and Ruth supported Bill in every way possible.

She was one of the few people who stood by him during his seizures that were started after a head injury during the Vietnam War. And although everyone could see Bill's love for Ruth, his depression over the limitation on his life drove him to a point of intense darkness and violence.

Please hear this story with an open mind, because although what happened was inexcusable and horrific, it's also true that Bill was a victim of factors beyond his control.

Bailey takes us on a whirlwind trip up Interstate-75 starting in Daytona Beach, FL, through Atlanta, GA, and winding up in the woods of Wisconsin in an unsolved, mysterious disappearance. Timothy Michael Molnar was the kind of young man who had everything going for him, and his life seemed to be moving in a positive direction. But one day, he just vanished, apparently of his own volition, and later ended up in Wisconsin, under mysterious circumstances, and leaving many, many questions.

Beth follows up with a survivor story that goes in a lot of directions to illustrate how some bad choices can take a nice, responsible person and turn them into a really bad one. Laura Palumbo thought she had a good guy in former Iowa State defensive All-Big-8 football player Lester Williams, but as she decided not to let his increasing chaos be the center of her life, he jumped right into the deep end and tried to take her with him. This story is one of lost potential, lost love, and an incredibly strong woman who took her experience and decided to use it to help other people who needed her.

Today Bailey decided to celebrate Puss' surprise heritage (a Norwegian Forest Cat), by crushing our souls with the story of Benjamin Labaran Hermansen. Benjamin was a bi-racial teen living in Norway, who was raised to advocate for himself, and anyone else who needed a voice. This story will anger you, but also give you hope for future generations.

Beth takes us to Northern Mississippi with Richard Morton, whose wife was convicted in a scheme to have him murdered. Richard survived, and decided for himself what the rest of his life would look like.

This week Bailey takes us to Arkansas for the maddening murder of Beverly Carter, a Realtor who was just trying to satisfy some new clients who wanted one of her listings. Beverly's killers claimed they never meant to hurt her, but when you hear the story, you probably won't believe that any more than we do.

Beth tells the story of Jayde Logan of Newport, South Wales. In 2020, Jayde was an exceptional young woman, trying to live her best life, when serendipity put her in the crosshairs of an unhinged, jealous woman. This person attacked Jayde with a hammer in the street, in front of many people, leaving her with scars, headaches, and understandable mental trauma.

But Jayde lived, healed, has returned to living her life, and after the head injuries she received, that's a wonder in and of itself.

Beth takes us to Americus, Georgia, where the murder of Margaret Leigh Bell is unlikely to ever be solved because so many mistakes were made when the case was still warm.

Leigh's case was a suggestion from my friend Brian, and I hope that he and others who remember Leigh's story are satisfied that we did right by her. Because she has never had justice, and her family has suffered since 1979, when the amazing 15 year old was brutally taken from them.

Bailey follows up with the survival story of a woman who was treated like family by her neighbors, but some families are not what they appear, and some people are very good at hiding their evil. Kimberly Morton was starting her life and had so many exciting new things happening, and she couldn't wait to share it with her closest friends.

But one of them had a secret, and when he finally let it out, he found out that Kimberly was stronger than he expected. She took her experience and set out to make a difference, and that's exactly what she has done.

So when we recorded this, Beth had pinkeye, and because of her blurry vision, she was having a really hard time reading what she had typed...leading to great confusion for Bailey. But no worries, Bailey is a good little editor and made it comprehensible.

This week has two tough narratives, but as always, we will leave you with a positive outcome for our survivor!

Beth starts us off with a case that hit Benton County, Washington like a bomb in 2004. King Robert Mars II, who was known by all as Bob Mars, was a beloved teacher, coach, volunteer, mentor, son, brother, husband, and father.

He would do anything to help or guide a kid in the right direction, but it was this generosity of spirit that put him in harm's way. He tried to be helpful, and was killed by two teenaged boys who took advantage of his kindness but were really just looking to do some damage.

Bailey introduces us to Holden White, an 18-year-old Lafayette, Louisiana man who was just looking to start his adult life and meet someone. A date he had talked to on Grindr for a month turned out to be a predator, and Holden barely survived their first meeting,

Even as he healed in the hospital, he was marginalized by the law enforcement officers who were supposed to be investigating his case. Thankfully, he demanded change, and got it.

This week Bailey covers the stories of two women who were both found murdered in the Indianapolis, Indiana, now-demolished Claypool Hotel during the mid-20th century.

Maoma Ridings was a friend to Franklin Delano Roosevelt as well as a Corporal in the Women's Army Corps in 1943, and was the victim of an unsolved homicide on the 7th floor.

Dorothy Poore was an 18 year old who was on a trip to Indianapolis to find a clerical job, but was found days later stuffed into a dresser drawer on the 6th floor. That crime was supposedly 'solved.' but Bailey has her doubts about whether they caught the real perpetrator.

Beth follows with the survival story of Johanna Orozco-Fraser, a high school senior who had already had a difficult life and then was put through a crime so cruel and traumatic that it took her years to be able to look at herself in the mirror again.

But Johanna was strong and made the decision that she would choose to be content with her life, and when she found that peace, happiness found her. This case is a tough one because the man who tried to kill Johanna was the man she had once loved with all her heart.

Bailey starts us off with the unsolved murder of Judy Smith. Judy was a wonderful human, a Bostonian who had a happy family life and an important career at which she excelled. On a trip to Philadelphia, Judy just....vanished.

There were sightings of her between Philadelphia and Boston, but where she was found five months later, 600 miles away in Mount Pisgah, North Carolina, hint at an ominous sequence of events that nobody really knows for certain.

Beth follows up with the survivor story of Angelique X. Angelique is an Australian woman who was held captive for three years in her teens and tortured by the monster who kept her there by way of manipulation and lies.

When she met an amazing person in 2017, he decided he had no choice but to free her from her nightmare. Angelique got away, and she and her friend will always be besties, because she knows he saved her.

In the bloopers this week, Beth shows that sometimes she can be, as her grandma used to say about other, unnamed people, "dumb as a box o' rocks."

After the last few episodes, you're probably looking for a little bit of a break....but you've come to the wrong BnB if that's what you're after. In fact, Bailey is so far from giving us a break that she has found a heartbreaking and maddening case from one of the safest cities in the world: Reykjavik, Iceland.

Birna Brjánsdóttir was a 20-year-old with her entire life ahead of her, and a plan on what she wanted to do with it. A sailor on leave near Reykjavik randomly passed her on an early Saturday morning, and that was the end for Birna.

She should be remembered, and her story should be shared.

Beth brings the survivor story this week, with a woman who was shot four times in the 'kill zone,' and still lived to tell her would-be killer, "I won, and you lost."

Yuly Solano met a man at her Florida condominium and when she decided not to date him, he did the unthinkable outside of her home. And when Yuly said he lost; he really lost. He attempted murder-suicide, but only the suicide was successful.

We're flipping the normal roles this week, with Beth taking the first part of the episode. The setting was Washington State in 1977, and 24 year old Susan Schwarz was being, as always, a very good friend.

When her longtime BFF intimated that she wanted to get away from her abusive husband, Susan helped her escape to Minnesota. But when the ex later found out that Susan had 'interfered', he brutally took out his fury on her.

Another victim of this awful man was so frightened of his cruelty that she was terrified to tell what she knew. But years later, this woman was the key to putting him away.

If the second half of this episode title is stressing you out, it should be. Bailey tells the events that happened in Cline Falls State Park in Oregon in the late 1970's, when two young Yale students stopped there while biking the Trans America Trail.

Terri Jentz and Avra Goldman experienced a senseless, brutal attack at the hands of a man who has never faced justice, despite it being commonly believed that the perpetrator is known.

But both women survived, thanks to superhuman determination by Terri to get help for herself and her friend. Their story will stay with you for a long time.

There was a LOT of weird stuff happening before, during, and after Christian was found deceased, and the fact that authorities immediately ruled it as self-harm does not answer any of the questions that remain. Beth follows behind, in the uplifting story, but this week (well, kind of like it always is...) it's a mixed bag. In order to lift up, we have to first go through an absolutely ghoulish attempt that Michelina Lewandowska's ex-fiancé made to get her out of his life so he could have their son to himself. This woman is an adorable soldier, and she will make you think twice about giving up on anything.

Unfortunately, Kirby lost a protector and supporter on her journey, and Bailey will tell you all about what a good guy Ron Sanchez, Jr. was and how he helped Kirby out twice before he lost his life.

This week was Valentine's Day, and in dishonor of the holiday, we are bringing you not one....not Two....but THREE loves gone wrong. And wrong in ways that that average person can't even fathom.

Bailey starts us out by telling the story of Gregory Green, who killed his pregnant first wife Tanya Clayton Green. Against the odds, he then was entrusted with a second chance. The problem is, that with his second chance, he committed a horrific family annihilation.... except for leaving his second wife Faith Harris Green alive, just to torture her. This one is brutal and maddening.

Beth follows up with a survivor story of a Pacific Northwest artist named Lonnie Feather. She thought that after twenty years, she knew the man who was working his way into her life. Unfortunately, he was a professional and knew how to make her see what he wanted her to see. She survived his attempt to kill her, and you will love her strength and stubbornness--he wasn't taking anything more from her!

So get ready for a rough first story, and then a story that will remind you that inside all of us, there is a SURVIVOR.

Just to clarify, the first half of this first episode of Pod Year Two is the story of an island paradise that was tainted by modern crime. Beth is bringing you the story of Italian tourists Dahlia Saiani and Giorgia Busato, who were regular visitors to the Island of Sol in the Cabo Verde archipelago. These two women, along with a 17 year old guest, were visiting the island in 2007 when the two adults were brutally murdered by an ex romantic partner. Had it not been for the survival of teenager Agnese Pace, it's likely that the murders might have never been solved.

And Bailey shares the amazing and unlikely survival of Kansas single mom and graphic designer Marti Hill. Marti was attacked and left for dead in her own basement, after her attacker decided she would be easy to kill and then wouldn't be discovered for days. But he was wrong. Marti's website MartiHill.com, where you can also find her memoir "Millimeter From Murder", provides resources to help heal the emotional wounds of violence.

At the beginning of this episode, we played the trailer for our friend Patrick, whose Not Adding Up Podcast is always well-researched, well-reasoned, and shines light on cases that aren't as cut and dried as people might want the public to believe. This week Bailey brings us a rough story of a lovely, vibrant life cut short in a senseless crime. Roxanne Wood just happened to live near a guy who was paroled only four months before he snuck into her home and attacked her. It took decades to clear her husband, and to finally find the guilty man.

And Beth is following up with a story about the MOST BADASS woman! Bailey found a case that you've surely never heard of: This is the story of a family in the 1980's, who were traveling from California to Massachusetts, and only a fraction of the way home, the 19 year old son disappeared in Wyoming. What people abroad don't always understand is how vast the United States is. And somewhere in the nearly 3,000 mile drive from Huntington Beach, CA to Massachusetts, David Vernon Lovely simply disappeared, and no one would help his family look for him.

And Beth is so excited to tell you about the story of two young, badass warriors from California who were individually victimized by a guy who literally had nothing left to lose. But these young women made the decision that the two of them, their sisterhood, was enough. They chose to get each other through their trauma. This case is an illustration of why caring for others is how we survive as individuals.

Beth starts with the story of the completely inexplicable murders of Cecil and Ruth Bybee, who were seasoned travelers. But the one time they broke their routine, they crossed paths with a man who was having some kind of cold feet, marriage-avoidance crisis. Seriously--this story is so unexplainable that it begs theorization.

Then Bailey has a home invasion case where the family did not want to be identified, but you will still feel like you know them. This family in Penhold, Alberta, Canada had three encounters with a seemingly-confused home invader within two days--and lived to tell the tale. They are still healing, but they did what they needed to, to survive.

This is the story of the murder of Cremer Young in mid-1960's Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Patricia Wenskunas spent her whole life being victimized by one person after another, and knew she had to find a way to end the cycle. And when the person who was supposed to be helping her heal turned out to be a long-game predator who was taking advantage of her vulnerability, she had to rise up and save herself. The first regular episode of 2023 brings us two stories, one from 1832 Philadelphia and the other from 2021 Atlanta.

Duffy's Cut is known for being the location of the unnatural and mysterious deaths of 57 Irish laborers, and Bailey will explain the lore as well as the newly-revealed truths that paint a clearer picture of what happened in Malvern, 30 miles west of Philadelphia.

Beth has a survivor story from Atlanta, with the story of Valerie Kasper. Valerie was a pregnant mother of a 3 year old, and one day while walking with her son, she was randomly attacked and stabbed by a stranger. This story is about the healing and resilience of a family built from love, and the strength with which they face their future challenges together.

This week starts with Bailey telling the story of Nancy Anderson, who wanted to see more of the world, so she left Bay City, Michigan for a new life in Hawaii. She was making friends, had a job, and was excited about her future until she was attacked in her apartment by a killer, whose identity was not known until this year. That's right, this is another occurrence of DNA bringing a very old, very cold case back to justice.

Then Beth doesn't have a survivor story. That's right. Sorry, but she found out that a lot of text/social media scammers are actually not doing it out of their own greedy impulses. So after looking more into this, she covers two cases. One is a man who was taken for over $1M in a texting crypto-scam, and the other story is a man who was promised a good job with good pay, but was ultimately kidnapped and trafficked as a texting crypto-scammer. Learn why not all people who are 'butchering pigs', as the scam bosses call it, are necessarily the real problem.

This week Beth is talking about the case that was known in the media as "The Kayak Killer," but we're not so certain it's that cut-and-dried. Angelika Graswald became infamous after her fiance Vince Viafore drowned on a couple's kayaking trip out to the ruins on Bannerman's Island in the Hudson River. The headlines focused on the prurient points of this case--maybe it's less black-and-white than it was made out to be.

Bailey has an amazing story of survival against all the odds, where Susan and Mike Gonzalez not only lived to tell, but also took down a team of vicious home invaders that had plagued a city in Florida for way too long. You won't want to miss this story.

And then Beth has a different kind of survivor story. The murder attempt turned into a race against time to save the victim, who lost 2/3 of herself. Today's survivor is 600 years old, has seen more history than most of us combined, and the reason this victim was attacked was for the most pathetic of reasons. Listen to how a guy confessed at his methadone clinic to being the person who nearly killed the Austin Treaty Oak, which has been part of Texas history since before there was a USA. There's more to this story than you might think.

Bailey is first with her telling of the tragic story of three college friends just having a relaxing night together at one of their homes, which ends in not one of their deaths, but two. Marianne Shockley was killed in her friend Clark Heindel's hot tub, and when he found out what had happened, he couldn't live with the tragedy of it.

Beth follows behind with the story of Wanda Palmer, who was attacked in her home in 2020 and spent the next two years deep in a coma. While she was unconscious, her case went pretty close to cold, as there wasn't enough evidence to charge anyone in the crime. But Wanda wasn't down for the count. You'll want to hear her survival story and how she finally solved the mystery of what happened to her.

For a record-setting third episode in a row, Beth is back as the bad guy. This week she covers a murder that took place in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio in 1921. Parma Township, the predecessor to the City of Parma, was a rural farming community that had a tiny, one-room schoolhouse called the Parma Central School. In February, 1921, its two teachers were brutally bludgeoned to death on a rural road on the way to catch the streetcar home. Hear the details of the case, the theories, and the suspects. Also, we'll discuss the well-intentioned but mindless destruction of the crime scene by local searchers, which is likely why this haunting case remains unsolved 101 years later.

Bailey also takes us back to her hometown in the northeast suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. In 2016, a beloved local restaurant was targeted in a terroristic machete attack that injured four people, several critically. The aftermath of this attack nearly wiped out the restaurant, but Bailey will fill you in on how the victims are doing six years later. She'll also tell how the Owner of the Nazareth Restaurant has fared through the years, and how his positive outlook is part of his local appeal.

Beth is first with the 8th Installment of Architect Mayhem, and in this case the Architect was Allentown, PA's David Michael Bolasky. David was an accomplished Architect and all-around great human who was brutally killed in 1995 by a bunch of incompetent fools. The circumstances of his murder are especially sickening because there was no way the perpetrators could have really thought they had any chance to get away with it. They destroyed an amazing person for absolutely nothing.

Bailey, as she does, will take us through a truly horrific crime against a South African triathlete. Mhlengi Gwala was taking life one day at a time and doing what he could to find health and happiness for himself and his two daughters. This crime was so cruel and monstrous that it's a miracle he survived and a credit to his inner strength that he came back from it stronger than before. Mhlengi is a billboard for the human spirit.

These are both rough stories, but you'll leave feeling good about the capacity of a person to embrace life on his own terms and make the most of every minute he has.

Bailey goes first to remind us about the horrific North Carolina murder of Latrese Curtis. She was traveling between Durham and Raleigh when she was brutally killed on the side of the highway a mile from her abandoned car. In the end it turned out that she was victimized by one of the last people anyone would have thought to look at. And the reason for it is....well....you'll see.

Beth brings the story of several crimes. Some of the crimes were against nature, which led to the final crime--the near-death of Charla Nash. Travis the chimpanzee was raised in an environment at odds with his instincts. But Charla went through absolute hell and her entire life changed forever when Travis lost it and mauled her. She has been through more than anyone should ever go through, and 13 years down the road, she is one of the strongest, most determined, and least woeful people you could meet. There is a lot of nuance in why this terrible thing happened to her, so hopefully we as humans have learned something. And we can definitely learn a lot from her resilience.

But first things first. Susan Brockert spent 15 years working her tail off at a job she loved. She succeeded in every respect, and her company decided to show their appreciation and reward her with the trip of a lifetime to celebrate her achievements. Of course, she naturally wanted to take her boyfriend of two years.

That decision led to the end of everything for Susan in the most horrific and brutal attack by the man who supposedly loved her.

So, next is the story of Natalie Queiroz, who was 8 months pregnant and just trying to meet her loving baby daddy for lunch. As she walked to the cafe, she was targeted in a stabbing attack on a public street, surrounded by dozens of people. But Natalie was lucky enough to survive and go on to bring goodness and light into the world, despite the horrific reality that led to her nearly dying in the street.

This week will make you angry and confused, and certainly wondering how people manage to justify their sociopathic actions in their own minds.

This week we have stories of two women who loved their husbands, and were forced to experience their murders.

Bailey will enrage you with the absolutely infuriating murder of Chad Oulson, who was murdered at the movies by an ex-police captain who claimed he was in fear for his life. Why would he feel scared for his life? Uhhh, because Chad threw some popcorn at him after being hassled multiple times. When you hear the sequence of events, entirely instigated by the ex-captain, it is really outrageous that this case turned out the way it did.

Beth then has to try to recover us from the first story, but this one is rough, too. Debra Puglisi Sharp and her husband Nino Puglisi were just living their best lives and looking forward to their 25th wedding anniversary, when a random stranger wandered in off the street and murdered Nino and took Debra captive. But there is even more to this story than the senselessness of the crimes--it's about how Debra ultimately kept her wits, outsmarted her captor, and got herself rescued.

The first story, from Bailey, is the maddeningly stupid murderer who lured Kim Wall to her death when she was trying to interview him for an article she wanted to write. From the minute the two of them were alone together, it was 100% certain that his deranged plan would not go undetected, so why did he kill her? See? Maddening.

Beth follows up with a story that isn't a happy ending, but it's a positive for forensic science. This is the case of the sexual assault and murder of Stacey Lyn Chahorski from Michigan, who was found in Georgia in 1988. And if you believe in karma, then this does have a fitting ending.

And an update on the California Statutes of Limitations that we discussed in Episode 37, thanks to my friend from college, Don XXXXX.

Bailey is in front with the case of Lee Rotatori, who was a dietitian about to embark on a new and exciting new chapter in her life. But, as in most of our stories, she never got the chance to enjoy it, because she was cut down in the prime of her life. And even though her killer was finally identified through familial DNA, that answered one question and raised a couple of new ones. This one is mysterious.

Beth brings the positive ending, but first you'd better be ready to get dragged through some thorns, because this story is a rough one. Laura Jastre and her friends were living dangerously deep in drug culture, but an unprovoked attack that killed two of her friends ended up being the jolt that Laura needed to take her own life back and try to help others do the same.

We had all kinds of tech excitement with this episode, but none of it was more distressing than Beth's alternating verb tenses in her story! Apologies to her former English teachers--she DOES know better than that!

Bailey saves the day (kind of) with survivor Joi Partain, who needed a little help and nearly died for it when her ex couldn't follow through responsibly. Joi received her second chance at life, and made something admirable of it.

If you already know anything about the second story, you also know it's also not a happy one. Not for the murder victim, not for the perpetrator, and especially not for the pawn in the middle of their childish rivalry. This is the seventh Architect Mayhem (!!) and it focuses on the 1906 murder of Stanford White, and how Evelyn Nesbit was the most innocent victim in the tug-of-war between White and millionaire Harry Thaw.

Jesse was just a sweet guy, bothering no one, and walking down the street in Haverhill, Massachusetts on a warm Friday afternoon. Out of nowhere, he was viciously attacked by total strangers who evilly wanted nothing more than to hurt someone. Jesse was left with critical injuries, some of which he will be dealing with for the rest of his life.

This is the story of Fern Beers Hile, who was sleeping soundly in her bed when two complete jackasses decided to rob her husband in the middle of the night and on a whim, killed Fern, who didn't even know they were there. They got $15, the family car, and yup--they also got arrested a few hours later.

But their antics after being arrested are also part of the story, so prepare for some twists and turns.

Daisy Paulsen, known to everyone as Jupiter, was 14 years old, and doing everything she was supposed to do. But on a summer Friday morning, she happened across the wrong man who brutally attacked her and took her away from her family forever.

There are many variables in this story that will leave you wondering about the mental state of her killer, but what it comes down to is that a beautiful, amazing teenager lost everything just because she crossed paths with the wrong person.

This one is tough, and left us heartbroken. But Jupiter saved a lot of people after her passing, and she deserves to be remembered for the goodness of her heart.

This Just One B has Bailey running the show, with the unsolved murder of Kimberly Sue Morse. This vibrant, sunny young woman had the world as her oyster, and she was living her best life and setting up her plans for the future, until someone brutally took her life, with no answers, and no suspects.
