Welcome to The Tea on Sustainable Living, a podcast where we spill the tea on living sustainably in a world on fire. (The “tea” being our honest thoughts, struggles, and whatever else comes up along the way.)

It's not easy living on a dying planet. Between work, relationships, bills, and the never-ending laundry, we all have enough on our plates (and yet ANOTHER dish to wash). Add in the state of the world, and it's natural that we want to curl up in bed (re-reading our favorite fantasy novels, of course).

Taking action isn’t as black and white as we want it to be. Sometimes, we get stuck in the big, messy grey area of caring for our planet, the people on it, AND ourselves…

So, how do we live a more meaningful life?

And look after ourselves?

And keep on top of that laundry?

And stay connected with loved ones?

And make better decisions and habits?

All while sustainably living our values?

What does this even look like?

We don't know!

But you can be a fly on our walls as we try to figure it out.

So, brew yourself a cup of tea, and let’s get comfy in that grey area together. TEA you soon!

-Brandee and Hannah

Follow us on Instagram @theteaonsustainableliving https://instagram.com/theteaonsustainableliving

How do you reinvent your style while trying to do your best for people and planet? How can you navigate your desire to buy new clothes, the pressure to consume from the world around us, and your values around sustainability?

In this episode, we talk about Brandee’s exploration of personal style and how she has approached clothes shopping so far. We also chat about consumerism, how even buying second-hand might be taking us away from the path we want to be on, and how to set goals that feel good to us rather than just another tick-box pass/fail episode.

Have you been exploring your style recently?

Hey y’all! It's been a while, but we’re happy to be back. We’ve come back with a broader understanding of what we mean by sustainability - and what we want it to mean for our show! We want our habits and lifestyles to support and align with our sustainability values, whether that’s getting in more movement or reducing our clothing waste.

Hannah kicks off our new experiment by sharing a habit she’d like to change - her phone usage - with the aim of building more intentionality into her free time. She shares that in the past week, she used her phone for at least four and a half hours every day (and some days, much much more).

We explore where that habit is coming from and set some goals for future episodes. Are you also struggling with your phone habit or looking to make some changes in your life? Why not grab some tea, get comfy, and hit that play button?

Links:

Book | Atomic Habits, James Clear

Book | The Lazy Genius Way, Kendra Dachi

Book | How to break up with your phone, Catherine Price

Newsletter | The Guardian Reclaim your brain

Podcast | The Lazy Genius

Send us a text message and let us know what you thought about the episode!

Are you planning a trip this summer?? (And if not, still read and listen for future you!) With the summer holidays just around the corner, we thought taking a deeper dive into sustainable travel would be fun (and hopefully helpful).

We’re breaking it down into stages, and in this first episode of our three-part mini-series, we’re talking about the planning stage. As in, what can we do in this stage to decrease our impact and have a more sustainable trip? From carbon offsetting (check out our previous episode, #7, on flying) to choosing eco-friendly accommodation options, we can do a range of things in the planning stage to lessen our impact on the planet.

We also discuss the importance of bringing money to local communities and supporting the local economy over those bigger travel providers. So if you're going on holiday soon (or any time), grab some tea, get comfy, and hit that play button.

Links and resources:

#7 | To fly or not to fly?

Article | The Best New Services for Planning a More Sustainable Trip in 2022

Article | Guide to green travel: Planning and financing a sustainable vacation

Article | THE AIRBNB EFFECT: NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF AIRBNB

Article | WHAT IS SLOW TRAVEL AND WHY DO IT?

Article | What Does the Phrase "Slow Travel" Actually Mean?

Article | What is Slow Travel? Banking investments can have a significant impact on promoting sustainable development and combating climate change.

But do we go for a green bank or stick with one of the major players?

Were you taught about climate change in school? Are you feeling a bit worried about the state of the climate crisis now? Is there a connection between those two questions? We don’t know; we’re not psychologists or mental health experts.

But, according to a 2001 report, 84% of 16-25-year-olds feel worried about climate change, with 45% saying that their feelings negatively affect their daily life and functioning*. Today, we’re looking at this statistic through the lens of education and discussing whether the current approaches in education are supporting children and young people. After all, feeling anxious when faced with climate change is an entirely rational response.

But young people are being given the most information about climate change through school curricula and yet also have a more limited possibility to respond to the issues. (Cue Brandee’s favorite quote: we can’t all be Greta. Can we find a balance between the necessity of teaching about such a massive challenge while supporting children and young people's mental health?

What brings you joy? What is the climate work that needs doing? What are you good at?

If you can answer all 3 of those questions (and find a common theme), you’ve just identified your unique climate action. Yay!

In today’s episode, we’re taking a closer look at Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson’s Climate Action Venn Diagram to (try and) determine the climate action that makes the most sense for us. You’ll hear us share our answers to the above questions and help each other find where they overlap. (You’ll also hear Brandee’s noisy neighbors because these walls are thin!

So grab some tea (and maybe a pen and paper), get comfy, and hit that play button.

Links and resources:

Article | Climate Action Venn Diagrams - Ayana Elizabeth Johnson
Article | Urban Solutions | WWF
Article | 10 Ways to Figure Out What You're Good At
Article | How to find the best local food near you - CPRE
Book | Drawdown, The Book
Library | Solutions Library | Project Drawdown
Podcast | How to Save a Planet | Gimlet
Project | Circles - The All We Can Save Project
Quiz | Free Personality Test | 16Personalities
Video | Ayana Elizabeth Johnson: How to find joy in climate action
Video | sustainability myths: plastic prevents food waste, glass vs. plastic, & recycling
Video | The Story of Stuff - YouTube
Website | 80,000 Hours: How to make a difference with your career

Send us a text message and let us know what you thought about the episode!

Today, we are spilling the tea on moving (house) and living with roommates.

We get it; it can be very tempting to simply leave all of your old crap behind (or throw it away) and buy all new stuff in your new apartment/flat/whatever you call it. But that’s probably not the most environmentally friendly way to move.

In today’s episode, we struggle (slightly) to get back into the groove of podcasting after Hannah’s brief hiatus. We chat about Hannah’s recent move (the reason for her hiatus), how there’s no one right way to move or furnish your home, and living sustainably with roommates.

So grab some tea, get comfy, and hit that play button. (And please ignore the sounds of Brandee's cat playing in the background.)

Links and resources:

The Health Benefits of Nettle Tea
Eden's Mission | Eden Project
7 Creative Tips For A More Sustainable Move
Moving Day, the Sustainable Way: 10 Ways to Lessen Waste When Packing and Moving
Simple Tips to Help Be Sustainable When Moving Into a New Apartment
7 Eco-Friendly Moving Tips for a Better Moving Day
Minimalism
Is Renting Or Buying A Home More Eco-Friendly?
A Guide to Sustainable Living for Renters and Tenants
How to be sustainable while renting
A RENTER’S GUIDE TO SUSTAINABLE LIVING
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUSTAINABLE HOMES?
25 Ways to Make Your Home Sustainable
War Advertising Council Slogan: Use it up...

Welcome to part 2 of my chat with longtime friend and #1 fan of this podcast, Kelly Pucillo! If you haven't listened to part 1 yet, episode #9, go back and listen to that now. Or after. Your choice!

I’m so excited to finally talk about the sustainability of motherhood with Kelly, as I am not a mom (unless you count cats as children??).

In today’s episode, Kelly spills the tea on motherhood and some of the sustainability and environmental struggles she now faces as a mom. She also shares her take on recycling, cloth diapers, secondhand clothes for kids, and more.

So grab some tea, get comfy, and hit that play button.

Links and resources:

#9 | The sustainability of anesthesia with CRNA Kelly Pucillo (Part 1)
#3 | Is plastic really that bad?
#2 | Why is Primark so irresistible?
Recycle Right: How empty is empty enough?

Today, we have a very special episode for you with our #1 fan. (And please pardon the hammering that would not stop in time for the start of this episode. Construction on the weekends should not be allowed.)

Sadly, Hannah could not join us for this one, so I (Brandee) am flying solo. Well, not quite.

In today’s episode, I have a very impromptu chat with Kelly Pucillo, one of my closest friends, about healthcare and the sustainability struggles she faces as a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist).

We’ve been friends since nursing school, so while I have close to zero knowledge of anesthesia, we dive into the good and the bad of the anesthetic gas desflurane, the environmental impact of convenience, and the ever-present underlying theme of awareness and intentionality when it comes to sustainability.

So hit that play button and stay tuned for part 2 of this chat (all about sustainability and motherhood) in two weeks!

Links and resources:

#3 | Is plastic really that bad?
Desflurane
Methane
Environmental Implications of Anesthetic Gases
History of Instrument Sterilization
Joseph Lister, the Man who Sterilized Surgery
Sterilizing Practices
Why you shouldn't buy a plastic cutting board
What is a staphylococcal infection?
9 ways to cut down on medical waste
People, planet and profits: the case for greening operating rooms

Send us a text message and let us know what you thought about the episode!

But you can be a fly on our walls as we (Brandee and Hannah) try to figure it out.

So, brew yourself a cup of tea, and let’s get comfy in that grey area together. TEA you soon!

Send us a text message and let us know what you thought about the episode!
