And then, in the middle of a world called good, God says there is something that is not good.

The man is alone.

So the Lord brings Adam into a deep sleep. Blood and water will come forth. And from His wound, another Bride will be gathered.

Before the fall, before the fig leaves, before the serpent’s question, God gives us a picture of love, union, and covenant — a hidden thread that runs from Adam and Eve to Christ and His Church.

Two brothers come before the Lord with offerings, but only one is received.

Abel, a shepherd, brings the first and best of his flock in faith—quietly foreshadowing the Good Shepherd who will one day lay down His life for the sheep. Cain brings from the fruit of the ground, but when his offering is rejected, his face falls and anger begins to grow. Before blood is ever spilled, God gives him a warning: sin is crouching at the door, waiting to rule.

In this episode, we uncover the meaning behind Cain and Abel’s names, the difference between true worship and empty religion, and the first signs of the enmity promised in Eden. One brother brings a better offering. The other finds himself standing at the threshold of something darker.

The first shepherd has appeared. The blood has not yet cried out—but sin is already at the door.

When does judgment occur? Will we receive new bodies? Do believers spend eternity in heaven, or on a renewed earth? And what is the New Jerusalem?

In this first Loose Threads episode, we follow the thread of eternity from Genesis to Revelation, tracing God's promise through death, resurrection, judgment, and the world to come.

The Bible's story does not end with souls escaping the earth. In Genesis 4:8–16, Cain leads Abel into the field, but what he buries there does not stay silent. Abel’s blood cries out from the ground, and God comes asking another question in the ruins east of Eden: “Where is your brother?”

Cain is judged, marked, and sent into wandering, yet even in exile, mercy is not absent. This episode dives into the ancient view that these “sons of God” were angelic beings who rebelled against their proper place, bringing corruption into the human story before the Flood.

But even here, judgment does not fall without warning. God says His Spirit will not contend with man forever, and man’s days will be 120 years. The clock begins to tick. The ark has not yet been built, the rain has not yet fallen, but mercy is already giving time before the storm.

In this episode, we trace the sons of God, the daughters of men, the 120-year warning, and the strange rebellion that sets the stage for Noah, the Flood, and the need for God to preserve the promised seed.

In Genesis 6:13–16, we slow down and look at its actual dimensions, the enormous amount of space inside it, and whether it could realistically hold the different kinds of animals Noah was commanded to preserve.

Then a strange biblical connection appears.

The Hebrew word used for Noah’s ark — tebah — appears only one other time in Scripture: the basket that carried baby Moses through the waters of the Nile. Two vessels. Two moments of death and judgment. Two men preserved through water. And in both stories, God protects the one through whom His plan of redemption will continue.

We also look at the ark’s three levels and a fascinating possible echo of the three realms described in Philippians 2—heaven, earth, and under the earth.

The ark was more than a survival vessel.

It carried the animals. It carried Noah. It carried his family.

But ultimately, it carried something even greater:

The promise that the coming Savior would still make it through the waters.

In Genesis 6:17–22, the word covenant appears for the first time in Scripture as God promises to preserve Noah and his family through the coming flood.

The time had finally come. In this episode, we enter the ark with Noah and uncover several details hidden within the timing of the Flood. We look at Methuselah’s age and the remarkable connection between the year of his death and the year judgment came, the repeated biblical pattern of 40 as a time of testing and trial seen later with Moses and Jesus, and the significance of the Flood beginning on the 17th day.

But the greatest picture may be the ark itself. There was only one door—one entrance into the place of salvation. Noah didn’t design multiple ways in, and when everyone was safely inside, God Himself shut the door.

Centuries later, Jesus would say, “I am the door” and “I am the way.” Just as there was one way into the ark before judgment came, Scripture points us toward one way from death into life.

The Flood wasn’t only a story of judgment.

The door is shut—and the old world disappears beneath the water.

In Genesis 7:16–24, the flood rises until even the highest mountains are covered, every breath outside the ark is extinguished, and Noah alone remains with those God preserved. We look at the flood as a reversal of creation itself, the significance of the waters prevailing over the earth, and even explore whether an event like the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis could offer a glimpse into the physical mechanisms God may have used as the fountains of the deep burst open and the heavens poured out rain.

Judgment has covered the earth.

But floating above the waters is something God has preserved.

And the red thread continues.

The rain had stopped, but the world was still covered in death.

In Genesis 8:1–12, Noah sends out a raven, a bird that could survive among what the flood had left behind. Then he sends a dove. The first time, it returns with nowhere to rest. The second time, it returns carrying an olive leaf—a small sign that life was beginning again. The third time, it never comes back.

Three flights. Three different messages.

Death was still present. Then came hope. And finally, rest.

The waters were receding, the judgment was passing, and a new world was beginning to emerge. But the dove’s final flight may point to something even deeper: after judgment comes peace, and after wandering comes rest.

We trace this pattern of judgment, sacrifice, and peace forward through Scripture, where the language of a pleasing sacrifice ultimately points toward Christ.

And when God declares that seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease “while the earth remains,” we see that the Flood wasn’t the end of the story.

It was a new beginning.
