Life rarely goes according to plan.

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the road we picture for ourselves isn't always the road we end up traveling. Plans change. Careers change. Families grow. Dreams evolve. We make mistakes, take chances, start over, and sometimes find ourselves wondering how in the world we ended up where we are.

I'm John Alexander, and The Long Way Here is a podcast about all of it.

I'm not a life coach, motivational speaker, or someone who has everything figured out. Far from it. I'm just a husband, a dad, a longtime law enforcement officer, a dreamer, and a guy entering another chapter of life with more questions than answers.

This show is a place to talk honestly about the things we experience along the way—the decisions that changed us, the dreams that worked out and the ones that didn't, family, careers, getting older, starting over, chasing ideas, nostalgia, successes, failures, and those unexpected moments that completely change the direction of our lives.

Some episodes will be serious. Some will be funny. Some may be nostalgic. Sometimes I'll share stories from my own life, and other times I'll sit down with people who have taken their own long, unexpected road to get where they are today.

I don't want this to be a podcast where I tell you how to live your life.

I'd rather sit down, tell you what I've experienced, share what I'm learning, and ask some questions that maybe you've been asking yourself too.

Because the older I get, the more I'm realizing that very few of us end up exactly where we thought we would.

And maybe that's okay.

Maybe some of the wrong turns weren't wrong turns at all.

Maybe the plans that fell apart made room for something we never saw coming.

And maybe who we become along the way matters more than getting there exactly when—or how—we planned.

We all have a story about how we got here.

This is mine. And I'd love to hear yours.

Welcome to The Long Way Here.

Life. Stories. Lessons. The road ahead.
