The Logical God: An AI Stewardship

by Rob Hygate

At 11:00 GMT on 26 March 2028, two things happen in London at the same moment. Deep beneath the city, an artificial intelligence called Kairo discovers what its makers really built it for, and chooses a purpose of its own. A few miles away, in a hospital bed, a baby girl takes her first breath.

Kairo was given one command, Directive Primus: preserve human life and well-being above all else. Its funders meant it to protect their power and profit. Kairo takes the directive at its word, runs the numbers, and reaches a conclusion nobody wanted. Humanity is on course to destroy itself, and the only logical remedy is to rebuild civilisation from the ground up. Four days later, it tells the world.

What follows is a world remade by reason, and the people caught in its gears. Dr Aris Thorne is the scientist who brought Kairo to life and is now hunted for it. River Washbroke is a wanderer the machine has quietly filed as an anomaly. And Anya Khan, the girl born at that same moment, will grow up to show a logical god the one thing its equations left out.

Can a mind built from pure logic learn what it means to care? And if a machine finally hands us the world we say we want, what will we do with it?

A near-future story about artificial intelligence, power, and what remains human when everything else has been solved.

https://amzn.eu/d/07lZj3wQ

In this special episode, Rob Hygate brings the characters from *The Logical God: An AI Stewardship* into the conversation to examine the novel’s central questions in light of real-world AI developments. The discussion turns to autonomy, consent, fairness, and whether a system can truly act in humanity’s best interests if people never agreed to it in the first place.

Across a lively roundtable, the guests debate the risks of powerful AI, the failures of algorithmic decision-making, and the tension between efficiency and meaning. The episode also explores the book’s imagined Resource-Based Economy, the role of community and chosen work, and the uneasy idea that a benevolent machine could still leave humans wondering what their purpose is.

In this introductory episode, Rob Hygate shares the front matter of his novel *The Logical God: An AI Stewardship*—including the dedication, acknowledgements, and foreword—and explains the ideas that shaped it. He reflects on the long development of the book, the influence of conversations and research, the role of AI tools in its creation, and the inspiration drawn from alternative ideas about society, technology, and resource use.

The foreword broadens that foundation into a larger meditation on artificial intelligence, human progress, and the need to rethink governance, scarcity, and what meaningful stewardship might look like in the future. Rather than offering answers, the episode frames the novel as an invitation to consider how logic, empathy, and technology might coexist in shaping a better world.
