The Education Commute turns the research UK teachers and school leaders don't have time to read into a 20-minute drive to work.

Each episode takes one piece of evidence - an EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit strand, a DfE or Ofsted policy change, a piece of international research - and asks what it actually means for Monday morning: what it looks like in a primary classroom, a secondary classroom, and a specialist setting.

Two hosts - one a serving practitioner, one a synthesised voice, disclosed every episode - argue it out rather than reading it out, caveats included. Every figure is sourced to a public body: gov.uk, Ofsted, DfE, the EEF, legislation.gov.uk, Parliament. This is the trailer, not the film - every episode links back to the source.

New episodes weekly.

Every teacher knows the moment: you ask "does that make sense?", and thirty-one heads nod back - some genuinely, some because nodding is faster than admitting they're lost. This episode unpacks why, using the Education Endowment Foundation's metacognition and self-regulated learning guidance (Second Edition, November 2025): teaching pupils to plan, monitor and evaluate their own thinking is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost strategies on the EEF's Teaching and Learning Toolkit - worth an average of eight months' additional progress, built on 355 studies. It costs no extra curriculum time, because it lives inside the lesson you're already teaching. We take it into a primary classroom, a secondary classroom and a specialist setting, and land on one practical swap: replace "does that make sense?" with "what's our plan?"

Sources:

EEF guidance report - Metacognition and Self-Regulated Learning, 2nd edition, 13 Nov 2025

https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/education-evidence/guidance-reports/metacognition

EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit - Metacognition and self-regulation strand

https://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/education-evidence/teaching-learning-toolkit/metacognition-and-self-regulation

The second voice on this show is synthesised (NotebookLM, Google) - the research, reading and editorial judgement are done by a serving practitioner.
