2016ರ ವಿಕಲಚೇತನರ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಕಾಯ್ದೆಯಡಿ 21 ವಿಧದ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಅನೇಕ ವಿಕಲಚೇತನರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಹಕ್ಕುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನೂ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ಅರಿವು ಇಲ್ಲ.

ಡಿ.ಇ.ಎ.ಎಲ್. ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್ ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಗದಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ 7 ತಾಲೂಕುಗಳು, 138 ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು 346 ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 4,000 ವಿಕಲಚೇತನರು ಹಾಗೂ 1,300 ಮಹಿಳಾ ಸದಸ್ಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

“ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯವೇ ಮುಖ್ಯ, ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯವಲ್ಲ” ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಆಧಾರವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಸಂಸ್ಥೆ ತನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ.

ಈ ಮೊದಲ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಡಿ.ಇ.ಎ.ಎಲ್. ಫೌಂಡೇಶನ್‌ನ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ, ಗ್ರಾಮೀಣ ಸಬಲೀಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದರ ಪಾತ್ರ ಮತ್ತು ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮೂಡಿಸುವ ಈ ಪಾಡ್‌ಕಾಸ್ಟ್ ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಅಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸರಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸ್ವಸಹಾಯ ಗುಂಪುಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ವಿಕಲಚೇತನರು ಒಂಟಿತನದಿಂದ ಹೊರಬಂದು, ಆತ್ಮವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ಸಮಾಜದ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಹಿನಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಸೇರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನೂ ಈ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.

DEAL stands for Disability, Entrepreneurship and Leadership. Based in Gadag district, Karnataka, the Foundation works across 7 taluks and 346 villages, engaging with around 4,000 persons with disabilities and 1,300 women through community-based programmes, self-help groups, livelihood initiatives, financial inclusion, awareness and leadership development.

Many rights, schemes and opportunities already exist on paper, but they only matter when people know about them and understand how to access them. Awaaz Apna was created to bring that information closer to the communities it is meant for — in simple, practical language, through conversations rather than lectures.

Across this series, we will explore disability rights, government schemes, financial inclusion, livelihoods, entrepreneurship, self-reliance and stories from people within the community.

Episode 1 is where that journey begins: by listening to the people DEAL works with and understanding why access to information can be the first step toward meaningful change.
