The best ideas don’t happen in a high-pressure boardroom; they happen during the post-work exhale, over a scoop of ice cream, when you finally feel safe enough to say the truth.

Welcome to Talking Shoppe, the official podcast of the Deming-Rivers Social Club (DRSC). We’re Dr. Essence and Dr. Emily—licensed psychologists, wives, and organizational culture consultants. It didn't take us long in the clinical world before we recognized that a lot of what gets labeled as an individual “mental health” problem is actually a systemic culture problem. You shouldn’t need a year of therapy just to recover from your 9-to-5.

This is what happens when two psychologists stop talking shop and start Talking Shoppe.

At DRSC, we believe psychological safety shouldn't be seen as the "cherry on top" for an organization. It’s the base layer that keeps the whole system from melting. In each episode, we’re moving the conversation from the therapist’s couch to the ice cream shoppe to deconstruct the "messy middle" of human services. We’re diving into the systemic cost of burnout, the identity work that actually matters, and the reality TV drama of office politics.

We don’t do corporate filler or vague wellness talk. We provide grounded, unpolished, and sometimes slightly unhinged psychological insights for anyone holding up the community. Whether you’re a nonprofit executive facing the "Founder’s Trap," a manager stuck in the impossible middle, or just someone exhausted by being in survival mode, Talking Shoppe is your space to chill, chat, and finally exhale.

Pull up a chair, grab a scoop, and let’s talk some shoppe!

<itunes:title>The Truth About What Your Organization Can Really Handle</itunes:title>

Essence and Emily open the episode with their recurring game, Work Wife, Work Overlord, and Work Nemesis. They then shift into a thoughtful conversation about capacity, expectations, and how organizations often ask for more than their people can realistically give. The episode centers on a simple but important idea: sustainable work depends on understanding capacity honestly, whether that means personal energy, team workload, or the systems that support both. Spoon theory and the idea of a “personal battery” are used to make the conversation practical, with the hosts emphasizing that capacity changes from day to day and that curiosity is a better starting point than judgment when assessing what someone can do. The episode's main theme: the gap between ambition and actual capacity. Essence and Emily talk about how organizations frequently set goals that outpace the resources, attention, and infrastructure available to the people expected to carry them out. They distinguish between dreaming and logistics, arguing that both need space and that realistic planning requires more than just enthusiasm. A recurring point is that capacity should be understood at several levels at once: individual energy, team workload, and organizational support structures. They also stress that overextension is rarely about laziness. More often, it comes from care, responsibility, and the pressure to serve others well. Spoon theory becomes the episode’s clearest framework for talking about all of this. The hosts use it to explain how people allocate limited units of energy across a day, and why it is a mistake to assume anyone begins with a full tank. Sleep, chronic conditions, stress, stimulation, and life demands all affect how much someone actually has available. That idea carries into the organizational discussion, where they push back on the assumption that unmet goals mean people simply did not try hard enough. Instead, they argue for better systems, clearer expectations, automation where possible, and support layers that keep individuals from having to compensate for structural gaps. They close out their episode with their Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.

00:00 - Getting ready, planning events, and launching the episode

03:01 - Choosing the Six wives for Work Wife, Work Overlord, Work Nemesis

11:24 - How the episode pivots into capacity and systems

15:15 - The core problem with ambition that outpaces capacity

18:38 - Why having two distinct meetings may be better than one

20:02 - Defining capacity with spoon theory

21:57 - What capacity means at the individual level

24:48 - Why capacity changes day to day

28:16 - Different ways of teaching self-assessment

30:28 - Understimulation and overstimulation both matter

32:53 - Why people assume work and home capacity separate cleanly

35:42 - The gap between organizational goals and real staff capacity

41:25 - Automations and workflows that reduce load

42:23 - Challenging the assumption that people are not trying hard enough

46:26 - First step advice for assessing capacity

48:48 - Personal battery and noticing what recharges you

49:40 - Why curiosity is the best starting point

50:09 - Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.

53:32 - Byeeee

After a brief catch-up on their hiatus, coffee runs, and a very important dog-toy debate, Essence and Emily dig into what makes a system genuinely useful. Using their storm-day routine for helping Montie manage anxiety as a starting point, they explore why the best systems are collaborative, adaptable, and built around the people who actually have to use them. They unpack the difference between a process that merely looks organized and one that actually reduces stress and decision-making in the moment. From workplace handoffs and onboarding to ADHD-friendly planning and crisis protocols, the conversation centers on designing systems for real life—not an idealized version of it. They also make the case for involving the people closest to the work, keeping instructions clear without making them overwhelming, and regularly reviewing what is and isn’t working. Then, in their weekly R.E.P.O.R.T., they share recent reads, favorite food finds, a Disney day, screen-free downtime, community involvement, and a few ways they’re treating themselves this week.

Timestamps

00:00— Welcome back: hiatus updates, busy season, and choosing quality over consistency for its own sake

03:52— Work Wife, Work Nemesis, Work Overlord: New York Times games and Monty’s favorite toys

09:26— Why thunderstorms led to a conversation about systems

17:51— Why the routine matters

26:27— Why one-size-fits-all planning systems often fail

32:18— The two questions every system should answer

36:37— Designing systems for the “worst version” of yourself

42:34— The difference between being detailed and being unnecessarily complex

47:26— Rolling out change with context, communication, and buy-in

49:39— Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T. begins

50:10— Reading

54:47— Eating

61:44— Playing

64:27— Obsessing

67:46— Recommending

70:38— Treating themselves

The main topic is psychological safety, defined (via Amy Edmondson) as the belief that one won’t be punished or humiliated for speaking up; they emphasize it’s a felt experience that can’t be declared, and distinguish supportive structure from harmful rigidity, using bowling bumpers, balloons, and dam metaphors. They describe consequences of low psychological safety—self-censorship, festering conflict, marginalization, and burnout—and connect it to Deming-Rivers Social Club and therapeutic work with groups and organizations. They close with their Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T.

00:00 Mic Check Banter

01:05 Podcast Habits

01:55 Tea Shop Shoutout

02:42 Episode Two Kickoff

03:00 Work Wife, Work Overlord, Work Nemesis

06:56 Coworker Invites Story

08:26 What Is Psychological Safety

11:32 Structure Versus Rigidity

16:28 Grounded Balloon Metaphor

18:23 Social Club Origins

20:55 Teaching Safety At Scale

22:30 Family Systems Safety

24:22 Leadership Safety Balancing

25:03 When Safety Breaks Down

27:27 Marginalization And Voice

29:06 Burnout And The Dam

30:57 Building Support Systems

31:36 Next Steps And Q&A

32:45 Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T

Get to Know Essence and Emily: Why We’re Starting This Podcast

Essence and Emily, psychologist, wives, and organizational culture consultants behind Deming-Rivers Social Club, introduce their new podcast as a way to share the raw, unfiltered conversations that don’t fit in typical social media content. They describe their work split between therapy and consulting with nonprofits and human services organizations to build more sustainable, inclusive cultures and reduce burnout and turnover through practical, engaging, experiential training rather than overly simplistic wellness advice. They share their path from grad school through internship matching, their training at Palm Beach County Youth Services Department, and how a systemic focus shaped their approach and led them to identify gaps after moving to Sarasota. They outline podcast themes: organizational psychological safety, mental health, identity, current events, and reality TV—and close with a “weekly R.E.P.O.R.T” on what they’re reading, eating, playing, obsessing over, recommending, and treating themselves to.

00:00 Welcome to Talking Shoppe: Meet Essence and Emily

00:20 Why a Podcast

01:47 Who It’s For

02:55 Therapy Meets Culture

04:08 Grad School to Doctor

04:41 Internship Match Day

05:55 Palm Beach Training

07:03 Residential Program Life

07:52 Postdoc and Love Story

08:45 Systemic Lens Explained

10:24 Identity and Diversity

12:53 Burnout and Capacity Gap

14:15 Consulting Mission Values

15:00 Real Talk Trauma Care

16:16 Better Training Not Chair Yoga

17:21 Reality TV Style Workshops

18:04 Podcast Rough Draft Vibe

18:40 Where To Find Us

19:21 Weekly R.E.P.O.R.T

25:58 Wrap Up And Next Episodes
