Star Trek TNG Review: The Arsenal of Freedom

In this review we delve into 'The Arsenal of Freedom,' the 21st episode of TNG's Season 1. Geordi La Forge leads the Enterprise D, while Captain Picard and an away team are trapped on the planet Minos.

We talk about its pacing, action sequences, and character dynamics. Key highlights and lowlights of the episode are discussed, including the portrayal of a car salesman as a holographic arms dealer and issues with the logic of the away team's decisions. We also touch character development, set design, thematic elements, and as always, share seven fun facts about behind-the-scenes trivia about production challenges and character interactions. In this episode we talk about 'Heart of Glory'. An episode that more than meets the eye with subsequent viewings once TNG and DS9 have wrapped up. This is related to the broadening of Klingon culture with this episode, while importantly, raising questions about the Federation/Klingon alliance before Star Trek 6 came out.

SNW - Hegemony - Ep10 - REVIEW

In this episode Adam (@DDX84 on IG) and myself discuss the tenth episode from the second season of Strange New Worlds. We discuss the point of the Gorn, how it doesn't work in the canon, The show isn't pushing boundaries like previous Treks. Pike for example knows his future, what could a Captain do with that power? Too many OG character that can't die kill the tension and Scotty is shockingly played by a white guy!

I troll Adam by not watching this ninth episode of Strange New Worlds and don’t tell him. In this episode we discuss our love and hate for musicals (love: ‘The Nightmare Cometh’ and ‘Dirty Dancing’. Adam watched the Buffy musical episode (and excuses its existence) to make comparisons as the writers of Strange New Worlds said the episode was their source of inspiration. We lament the lack of science in this show, again, lament the lack of strong characterisations and the closing of two CW inspired relationships. We also learn Christina Chong has the best voice and Kirk’s relationship with Lana effecting the canon again.

Lisa Klink - Writer from Star Trek: Voyager

This is my chat with Lisa Klink, one of the writers of Star Trek: Voyager. She wrote such classic episodes as 'Revulsion', 'Resistance', 'Dreadnought', 'Scientific Method', 'Message in a Bottle' and 'The Omega Directive' to name a few.

We discuss her early career, the production workflow with creating episodes, the Voyager relaunch novels, why Lisa left Voyager, and her thoughts on continuing the Star Trek Voyager story into an imagined Season 8.

If there is one topic I would revisit, it’s how two Star Trek shows of DS9 and Voyager had different writer’s rooms, and the topic of bringing in more women writers like Lisa into the DS9 side of things as even consultants because we talk about the O’Brien’s marriage to Keiko not being that realistic and different to TNG.

SNW: Ep1 - Strange New Worlds - Review

In this episode I review the first episode of Strange New World’s first episode.

In the 23rd century, Starfleet Admiral Robert April recalls Captain Christopher Pike of the starship USS Enterprise from shore leave after Pike's first officer, Una Chin-Riley (referred to as "Number One"), goes missing during a first contact mission. Pike is reluctant to return to space and confides in Vulcan science officer Spock—who has just become engaged to T'Pring—that he saw a vision of his own paralysis during their mission with the USS Discovery.

They travel to the planet Kiley 279, which is in a similar state to 21st century Earth and on the brink of civil war. They have reverse-engineered a weapon from starship warp drives after witnessing the Discovery mission in nearby space. Pike and his crew rescue Number One from captivity and break Starfleet's General Order 1 by interfering in the society to convince them not to use the weapon. They avoid repercussions because of the top secret nature of the Discovery mission but Starfleet doubles-down on the rule by renaming it the Prime Directive. Pike recommits to his role and captains the Enterprise on a new five-year mission of exploration.
