This is my 58th episode and my theme of the month is Justice in January. Where black horror takes revenge and teaches us lessons that colonizers would like us to forget. In today’s movie, we are taking a look at the projects and how communities like Cabrini-Green are built into a myth. A myth about a group of people, where anyone outside of Cabrini-Green is afraid to even drive past it. This fear isn’t fueled by an urban legend though, it’s brought on by racism, segregation, and poverty. Today I will be covering the 1992 film The Candyman. Directed by Bernard Rose and written by Clive Barker and Bernard Rose

Guest:

DIONNE- Bonita Blacc Makeup Studio, Film\Tv MUA SFX

https://www.instagram.com/bonitablacc?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

Sources:

https://www.britannica.com/topic/Cabrini-Green

https://halbaronproject.web.illinois.edu/items/show/45#:~:text=Located%20on%20Chicago's%20North%20Side,The%20Gautreaux%20v.

https://blackpast.org/african-american-history/cabrini-green-housing-project-chicago-1942-2009/#:~:text=That%20project%20was%20completed%20in,housing%20to%20replace%20Cabrini%20Green.

https://www.culledculture.com/candyman-2021/

https://ahuffleofhorror.home.blog/2020/06/22/candyman-and-white-privilege/#:~:text=But%20Helen%20moves%20through%20the,benefits%20from%20it%20beyond%20death.

This is my 57th episode and I will be covering the 1991 classic horror film The People Under the Stair by Wes Craven.

My theme of the month is Justice in January. Where black horror takes revenge and teaches us lessons that colonizers would like us to forget. In today’s movie, a family is being evicted, and they are the last ones in a building that is set to be torn down to build new condominiums with “nice clean people” in there.

The film pits the impoverished Fool and his family against wealthy landlords who exploit tenants, hoard wealth, and mercilessly defend their property. This mirrors real-world class tensions and critiques of early-1990s capitalist policies that never ended and only got worse.

Guest:

randall_rydell_russell

3R Entertainment

https://www.instagram.com/randall_rydell_russell?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

https://youtube.com/@tripl3r259?si=h8c0DLyS1JzBJVlZ

Sources:

https://www.wescraven.com/film/the-people-under-the-stairs/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_People_Under_the_Stairs

https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3475241/see-no-evil-prescience-people-stairs/

https://screenrant.com/the-people-under-the-stairs-know-about-the-wes-craven-film/

https://classic-horror.com/reviews/people_under_the_stairs_1991.html

https://www.whatsafterthemovie.com/summary/the-people-under-the-stairs

Also known as the “Bodies in Barrels” case, this series of killings left an entire community shaken and forever marked the small town of Snowtown with infamy. We’ll explore how John Bunting manipulated those around him, targeted society’s most vulnerable, and created an atmosphere of fear and control. The movie is told from the perspective of Jamie Vlassakis, a teenager drawn into Bunting’s world. Join us as we connect the real-life horrors with their cinematic portrayal, uncovering how the movie captures the suffocating dread of abuse, complicity, and violence.

Guest:

Sean Watson - Actor/Serial Killer in Upcoming Horror Movie Night Shift

https://www.instagram.com/georgias_papa?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

https://www.instagram.com/puppetcombovideo/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Sources:

THE SNOWTOWN MURDERS – Human Monsters True Crime Blog

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1680114/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-570-the-snowtown-murders-part-i-the/id437299706?i=1000653026402

Listen as I analyze the themes of this film and the extensive research done to create the almost perfect predator.

Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Buffalo Bill are a culmination of serial killers. Just like the skin suit being crafted by Buffalo Bill, his character was patched together with characteristics from serial killers Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, Gary Heidnik, and Edmund Kemper.

In this week’s episode of Scream Queen Podcast, we’re cracking open the back-to-school body snatcher classic, The Faculty, a sharp, satirical blend of teen horror and sci-fi invasion from the late '90s. As part of my Summer Slashfest theme, we're diving into the era of angsty teens, killer soundtracks, and classroom chaos. My Guest Christopher James from I Love Horror Podcast joins me to discuss the social hierarchy of high school to themes of forced conformity. We explore how this cult favorite holds up in a world that still tries to make everyone fit the mold.

Guest Information:

Christopher James - I Love Horror Podcast

https://www.instagram.com/i_love_horror_podcast?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

https://www.instagram.com/macabre_christopher_reviews?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

A blood-soaked critique of consumerism, collapsing institutions, and the eerie numbness we’ve built around violence. But beneath the gore and the ghouls lies something even darker: the real-world horrors of the Vietnam War.

We explore how Romero channeled the chaos and brutality of the war, not just in his depiction of zombie carnage, but in the way, Dawn mirrors America’s media-saturated descent into desensitization. From the opening scenes in a panicked news studio, to the militarized police raids, and the cold efficiency of televised death; Romero’s zombies are us.

In this week’s episode, we dive into Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later—a haunting portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a rage virus. But the real terror isn’t just the infected—it’s what happens when humanity loses its moral compass. As survivors clash with soldiers in a crumbling society, we’re forced to ask: What are people capable of when the rules disappear?

This discussion takes a sobering turn as we connect the film’s themes to the real-life horror faced by comfort women—women and girls who were systematically abducted, trafficked, and sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War II. Through this lens, we explore the weaponization of women’s bodies, the myth of protection by military power, and how rage—real or viral—has been used to justify violence against the vulnerable.

Often overlooked, she was horror’s first slasher villain in the franchise, turning maternal instinct into murderous rage.

But the horror doesn’t stop at Crystal Lake. We dive into the real-life Lake Bodom murders of 1960 in Finland, where three teenagers were brutally killed while camping. But when the system fails her, she doesn’t just seek justice… she becomes it.

We break down how M.F.A. flips the revenge narrative on its head with haunting realism and feminist fury — and I make connects to the true horror of the Brock Turner case, where a convicted rapist served just three months in jail after being caught assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster.

What happens when a survivor stops waiting for justice and starts creating her own?

Trigger warning: this episode includes discussions of sexual assault, trauma, and real-life rape cases.

In this episode, I cover the movie Hard Candy (2005) with my guest Melanie from Screen queen reviews. This is a horror/psychological thriller that forces us to confront the blurred lines between justice, vengeance, and manipulation.

In this episode, I take a critical lens to Jennifer’s Body (2009) with guest Grim Thrall, examining how the film reclaims horror tropes to explore themes of female autonomy, societal objectification, and the commodification of violence against women. Often misunderstood upon release, Diablo Cody’s screenplay now stands as a biting (and blood-soaked) commentary on adolescence, desire, and betrayal.

We draw connections between the film’s narrative and the real-life murder of Elyse Pahler, whose death was allegedly cited as inspiration for the film. Elyse’s case—marked by ritualistic violence, misogyny, and media sensationalism—mirrors the exploitation and erasure that Jennifer’s Body critiques through its subversive storytelling.

Guest Info: Grum Thrall on social media platforms.

https://grimthrall.com/

Sources:

https://cdn.wickedhorror.com/features/is-jennifers-body-based-on-a-true-story/

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1131734/

She is a shy girl that doesn't fit in because of her sheltered life with a religious zealot of a mother. Through the trauma of being bullied at school and constantly punished by her mother, Carrie gains telekinetic powers. She is asked to the prom where she loses control of her new powers. We discuss the horror comedy that crams the most references you will ever see on the horror genre in one film. A group of kids go to a remote cabin in the woods where their fate is unknowingly controlled by technicians as part of a world-wide conspiracy where all horror movie clichés are revealed to be part of an elaborate sacrifice ritual. For the true horrors, much of Drew Goddard's inspiration for this movie came from his own upbringing in Los Alamos, New Mexico, a place filled with scientists and co-workers all going about their business and living seemingly routine and ordinary lives even though they were building nuclear weapons that could potentially destroy the entire world.

In this episode, I delve into the demons of The Devils Rejects. The Firefly family is a murderous psychopathic bunch that are running from the law after their home is raided by the police. The Devil’s Rejects explores themes of family, violence, and the darker side of humanity. Sheriff Wydell is the embodiment of a hero that turns into the villain when he crosses the thin line between the law and the outlaw. I also get into the true crime connections with the Manson Family, The Bloody Benders, and Tom Horn.
