The couple shares how they first met during a job interview at a coffee shop, where Cherish ordered hot chocolate instead of coffee. James was caring for his mother, who had Alzheimer’s, and was drawn to Cherish’s compassion and commitment to family. Cherish immediately noticed James’s character and appearance, and their shared desire to serve others became the foundation of their marriage and future business.

James describes an unexpected path into the insurance industry. After negative experiences, he vowed never to return, but losing his job led him to reconsider. Following a long conversation with a recruiter, he believed God was directing them toward a new purpose. While Cherish balanced a corporate career, college, and raising their young daughter, James launched an insurance agency from home. Eventually they decided to work together because they wanted to build a life, not just separate careers. Their agency grew from a handful of clients into a large organization serving Texas families with Medicare, life insurance, long-term care, retirement, and estate-planning strategies.

Cherish explains that their business evolved by listening to clients. Repeatedly, families expressed the same concerns: protecting loved ones, preserving property, avoiding unnecessary hardship, and passing meaningful legacies to future generations. Those experiences shaped the company’s mission and inspired the phrase “Leave More Than Money.”

The conversation shifts to caregiving. James’s mother developed Alzheimer’s while the couple was raising their daughter, building a business, and working demanding schedules. They helped provide daily care alongside James’s father, learning firsthand the emotional, physical, and financial realities caregivers face. The experience reinforced the importance of preparing for retirement and long-term care before a crisis occurs.

In 2021, both James and Cherish became critically ill with COVID-19. Their oxygen levels dropped dangerously low, and they feared they might not survive. Their daughter temporarily became their caregiver before they sought emergency treatment. After receiving monoclonal antibodies, they slowly recovered but continued battling long-COVID symptoms for years. They credit their business with providing the flexibility and residual income that sustained their family during recovery.

Just as they began regaining their health, James’s father developed dementia. The progression forced difficult decisions, including taking away his car, caring for him in their barndominium for two years, and eventually moving him into memory care. Although exhausting, the journey deepened their compassion and strengthened their desire to help other families facing similar situations.

Looking back, James and Cherish believe God used every hardship to prepare them for a greater purpose. Their experiences helped them better understand the fears, questions, and challenges clients face every day.

They created Retire Ready Texas to preserve stories that might otherwise disappear with time. They encourage families to record conversations, ask meaningful questions, and capture the voices, memories, wisdom, and faith of loved ones before those opportunities are gone.

The episode concludes with an invitation to think differently about legacy.
