Ashley Mielke is the Founder and CEO of The Grief and Trauma Healing Centre in Edmonton, a counselling service staffed by nearly two dozen therapists and registered psychologists who themselves have all endured grief and loss.

They believe in a holistic approach to healing, and offer talk therapy, the Grief Recovery Method, and body-based approaches such as (the miraculous) Eye Movement and Desensitization therapy (EMDR). Ashley and her team are in the process of opening their second location while offering in-person and online services, Alberta-wide, to all demographics.

Ashley’s journey to owning and operating this business began with the devastating loss of her father after his relapse into drug and alcohol addiction and eventual suicide in 2010. (Be warned that Ashley shares this story in graphic detail.) After completing the Grief Recovery Method in 2013, Ashley “felt called” to begin the Grief and Trauma Healing Centre and found her purpose in serving others.

Why do so many of us struggle with the grieving process and what can we do right now to improve this?

How does the revolutionary EMDR therapy heal those who are grieving or traumatized?

How can we all fight against today’s “distracted culture” and practice intention and awareness?

What is faith and what is intuition? And could they be the same thing?

Patrick and Ashley have a moving and enlightening conversation about all this and more.

For more information on the Grief and Trauma Healing Centre, please visit https://www.healmyheart.ca/

Find them on Instagram @griefandtraumahealingcentre

Following a challenging discussion with Brittany Ohe in episode 20, Patrick records his first of many solo rant-style episodes.

What does it mean to have an idea, and what is the danger of letting your ideas determine your identity? Is fairness even possible? Even if systemic oppression exists, what good is it to internalize collective victimhood? And how could a fully equitable society ever exist if we're stuck arguing about ideology and dogma?

Could it be that the only truth is that which is inside of us?

This episode was originally released on February 17, 2021 as episode 21 of the North Bank Media Podcast, entitled "So What?"

Brittany Ohe has a Bachelor's degree in economics and is pursuing a Master's in Interdisciplinary Studies, Equity and Workplace & Organization. She joined Patrick to first answer his question "what is systemic racism?"

From there, they spoke for over two hours, with Brittany taking a broadly progressive stance, arguing that society is unfairly constructed as a patriarchal, white supremacist hierarchy where marginalized folks are perpetually victimized.

Together they did work on some solutions. If there is unfairness and systemic oppression in this world, and if I stand to gain in the face of others' misfortune, what can I possibly do about that?

This episode was originally released on February 15, 2021 as episode 20 of the North Bank Media Podcast, entitled "The Politics of Compassion."
