Moving For Smarties, hosted by Mariette Frey of Mariette’s On The Move, started as an interview-driven podcast exploring the real stories behind relocation, reinvention, and life transitions. Across 60+ conversations with first-time homebuyers, repeat movers, industry experts, and everyday people navigating major life changes, this show opens the curtain on what moving is really like—from the joyful and exciting to the unexpected, chaotic, and downright overwhelming.

In the first 60 episodes, the show dives into the human side of moving: identity shifts, decision-making, financial realities, emotional resilience, community building, and the brave moment when someone decides, “It’s time to go.” These episodes are long-form, honest, and full of lived experience you won’t find in a checklist.

Moving forward, we're excited to bring you the more educational, structured, step-by-step side of relocation, and changing our name to Moving For Smarties. This show is built as a bingeable class on YouTube and we're making it available everywhere you listen as well. We take the full FRED Framework journey (Finances, Robustness, Ecosystem, Dreams) through curated playlist paths that guide your decision-making from the ground up.

Both shows work together:

• (The old) Mariette’s On The Move = real conversations and lived experiences.

• (The new) Moving For Smarties = the coaching, tools, and frameworks to help you make a values-aligned move.

Whether you’re preparing for a move, considering a major life shift, or simply love hearing the behind-the-scenes stories of people rebuilding their lives, you’re in the right place.

For deeper support, join The Smart Move Society, a community that offers group coaching, 1:1 coaching options, workshops, and city-focused guidance to help you relocate with confidence. It came from a conversation we were having about 'robustness', which is part of my FRED Framework (physical strength) when it comes to moving, and he mentioned something about how he's doing rental arbitrage. I was like, 'time out- what is that??' I had never heard of it, have you?? It's when you do a long term rental agreement with a landlord to rent out that place short term. It's a great alternative to buying a place and rent it out on a short term basis, but there are some pros and cons. Tune in to find out what they are!Kevin's a former college and professional athlete who now owns a fitness business called Hybrid Performance Center in Peoria, AZ where he trains all levels of baseball players from young high school kids to players that play for major league baseball team. Want to check out some of my favorite things from the show?

What if you decided to travel the world for 3 months, and it turned into over a year? That's what happened to my friend Hollie. She went to several countries in Asia, North & Central America, Europe and Australia. In June of 2023, we talked about her move back to America, discussing what cities she was considering and what they needed in proximity for her to thrive. I advised her on her job search and resume, and we discussed what she needed to consider when searching for neighborhoods in her new city. Hollie is a very confident, mentally strong individual- what transpired between her decision of the city she would move to, and landing in Chicago was surprisingly emotional for her! In this very raw interview, we talk about the darker side of loneliness in the moving journey, and we set realistic expectations on what supports you need to put in place to ensure that when you have doubts, unanticipated life events, and setbacks, you have healthy coping tools, so you don't feel so alone, especially if you have uncertainty about the future.Hollie was only 3 weeks into living in Chicago; we will check back with her in a few months to get her perspective and reflect on those first few months in her new city.Want to check out some of my favorite things from the show?

On today's show, we’re talking to the Division Chief, Monique Riddick, for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) out of Washington, DC. The FMCSA's regulations protect consumers moving to a different state and provide information on the rights and responsibilities of consumers and the movers they hire. We go deep into what the FMCSA does to protect consumers, what to do if you feel you’ve been scammed and what resources they have for consumers at ProtectYourMove.gov such as a rights and responsibilities handbook, a moving checklist, and most importantly, the database to search for the moving company you’re considering hiring to make sure they’re in good standing with the Department of Transportation and the FMCSA. That’s also where you can find the link to file a claim if you feel you’ve been scammed.

Want to check out some of my favorite things from the show?

Andrea Fox, or @dailydre1 as her Charlotte fans know her, comes on to do a spotlight on our new hometown...Charlotte, NC!! I've been waiting since I started this podcast to do one on Charlotte but I hadn't yet found anyone that was really dialed in on Charlotte until a few people sent me posts form her!Originally from Montana, Dre Fox made a 12 year stop in Austin, TX on her way to Charlotte, NC where she now calls home. This Charlotte influencer gives her audience a front row seat to some of the best experiences Charlotte has to offer.Having moved to Charlotte in the last two years, I can tell you that Dre has experienced way more of Charlotte than I have! I originally had a few people send me her Insta when they were planning to come and visit- I saw all these great places to check out! Now I love scrolling through her Instagram and building a list of all the best things to do in CLT whether it's food, events & music for my fun summer lineup. We talk through some of the neighborhoods in Charlotte and how important it is to consider the neighborhood lifestyle, meaning, you might want to see if you'd be living around people in your neighborhood that you could see hanging out with so you build your community quickly. But I also loved the business side of the conversation about Charlotte and how she can foresee Charlotte growing down the road as the city makes investments into growing the district of Uptown and leveling down the density of South End- we both look forward to it feeling a bit more balanced in the future.A little *BONUS* Dre talks a bit about areas of Austin, TX too since she just moved there a few years ago! I love that she did a POC in a few different cities before landing in Charlotte and I agree, Charlotte's like Austin about 10 years ago with a lot better weather and houses with big windows (since you're not running for the shade on a hot TX day).If you want to keep in touch, jump on the Mariette's On The Move website and register for my FRED Freebie that gives you a few questions to start out with in every area of FRED.
Relocation Fatigue With Laura Makes Moves

<itunes:title>Relocation Fatigue With Laura Makes Moves</itunes:title>

I'm excited to introduce you to Laura Sinclair of Aiken, SC, founder of Laura Makes Moves. Laura is a Relocation Specialist and Real Estate Agent, originally from Canada, who moved to Virginia for school, met her now husband and permanently moved to the US. Laura realized how difficult it can be when you move to a new city, especially if you've never made a big move before. After getting her Real Estate license, Laura made it her mission to help others have less stressful moves. Laura provides a service helping clients find a real estate agent in the city they're moving to, interviewing them on her client's behalf (to make sure they specialize in working with clients that are relocating to their city) and giving them tips and tricks through her blog, her moving guide and posts on social media.

Laura and I have a very important conversation about 'relocation fatigue.' You might have experienced it—it refers to when you know you might move soon, and you stop living in the present! You become detached from the world you're living in because the 'you're moving soon' mindset becomes a coping mechanism. This could show up as not leaning into relationships, or caring about the everyday life you're building. It's hard to articulate when you're in it, but it's not sustainable and awareness can help you get past it. Different than the '6 Month Funk' that can occur after you move, this could occur before you move, and it's good to be aware of it so you can get ahead of it. Moving to a new place, especially if it involves a long-distance move, can be a major life transition requiring significant time, effort, and planning. We also talk about City POC's, the state of 'languish' and quietly quitting where you are, the 6 Month Funk and how you can avoid it all.

Have a topic you'd like me to discuss?

I'm so excited to introduce you to Ali Wenzke, the author of The Art of Happy Moving. Ali is originally from Miami, FL but moved 10 times in 11 years and she criss-crossed the country with her husband and children, now residing in Willmette, IL. Ali is currently a Real Estate agent for Baird & Warner in a suburb of Chicago. She gives us some great nuggets about buying a home such as having a Real Estate attorney, what closing costs look like (which vary state by state) but having gone to law school herself, she talks about the protections you might not know about if you're a first time home buyer. Ali does many things to welcome new residents to her town. She does a 'welcome to Willmette' and is the Welcome Willmette Ambassador for the city of Willmette, IL. This is one of the benefits of reaching out to a Real Estate Agent when you're moving to a new city! We also talk about decluttering + taking a picture of your space to see what needs to be moved, donated or tossed. Moving is EXPENSIVE and especially if you're moving across state lines (you pay by the pound) so there are some great tips about this in her book!If you want to keep in touch, jump on the Mariette's On The Move website and register for my FRED Freebie that gives you a few questions to start out with in every area of FRED.

This episode is about going & growing through what might feel like a shameful situation such as tooth loss, which is hard. In the FRED framework, R stands for Robustness and when I was putting together the framework, I couldn't decide which one was more important- your physical or mental strength- I'm glad I roped them together because on this episode I talk about how my physical situation (losing a tooth) caused me tremendous mental stress- but also how I found peace through this whole process. Just like moving to the absolute best place for YOU, it's a process. Robustness is hard. It takes daily work but we can get you there! Here are some of the links I spoke about: A 2020 blog by Aesthetic & Implant Dentistry of Atlanta talks about the stats. Here's the story about Princess Glitterhead that I spoke of and you can find her on the Tik Tok. "Healed"on Prime Video is the movie I spoke of that Anita Moorjani had that awesome quote about remembering her mission (being in remission). Let me know what you think via reviews, social media or via an email. I'm here to walk besides you on this human experience that no one is talking about...until now. If you want to support the show, jump on my Faves Page above and buy yourself something really nice. I do get a commission and I reinvest that money back into the show. Oh and let me know if there's a topic you'd like to hear about!

Have a topic you'd like me to discuss?

In today's episode, we talk about the R in the FRED Framework which stands for Robustness. It is HARD sometimes. I recorded this episode the morning I was going to get one of my front teeth removed. My shock, horror and disbelief in what my dentist was telling me, why I had no choice but to get it done (or it would have fallen out on me) and all the research rat holes I went down to get to this point. What's crazy is that it is a normal human experience and not just for old people. Next week I talk about post-procedural stuff but in this episode, I have a little bit of a pity party and you're invited! <itunes:title>Purposeful Pivots with Will Dulin</itunes:title>

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing my cousin, William Dulin, an Indiana native and successful real estate agent who's ability to adapt, pivot and save for a career that he's absolutely thriving in, has been a joy to watch and learn from over the years. Will went to Purdue University and when he left school with a Business Management degree, he wanted to try everything! He joined the Navy and following a successful military career, William didn't really know what he wanted to be until he experienced life a little. Being tuned into how he was feeling about what he was doing at the time helped him determine rather quickly if he was in the right industry or if it was time to pivot. As his cousin, I couldn't have been prouder of him when he bought his first house (way before me) and then proceeded to remodel it with money he had saved, rented out a few of the rooms and then sold it...only to do it again! He was the last one to realize he was born to be a Real Estate agent and I can't wait to share how he got there. He shows you how to pivot with purpose, with the self-assurance that you will figure it out along the way and the universe would reveal what you should be doing when it was supposed to...and boy did it! While he waited for the big reveal, he found joy in saving every penny he could, declining trips with his friends and fun nights out so he could have the freedom to invest more in his future and as life would have it, the buying, remodeling, selling of homes brought him joy. Now going into his second year of his new career (having sold millions of dollars in properties), he's on track to double that this year in the town he loves. That city is Crown Pointe, IN. It's a Northwest Indiana suburb that we tease is also a suburb of Chicago given its very close proximity. Learn about the affordable housing, how it's the crossroads of America, boasting 2 Top Ten colleges, beautiful Lake Michigan, The Albanese Gummy Bear Factor (my fave in the world) and so much more! DM me on Insta or via my website for Will's information to work with him in Crown Pointe!

Have a topic you'd like me to discuss?

I’m super excited to introduce you to Dr. Natalie Luke, the author of "UnCeiling Your Career: At Any Age", where she walks us through her journey of working as a high school teacher to getting her PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biophysics, pivoting into the corporate world and then writing a book that helps us all level up. In this book, readers are offered a different method that helps them battle self-doubt, build strategic plans, and maintain a positive attitude to get ahead in their careers. In our conversation, Dr. Luke takes us through her mother's journey that started by doing a little 'productive daydreaming' when she was running a grocery store and raising her children, to being a successful ER physician, teaching Natalie (and all of us) that you're never too old to pursue your dreams. Coaching through overwhelm, Natalie reminds us to take things one step at a time- even she got overwhelmed when she was writing her book and she had just spent years writing her dissertation and research getting her PhD! Dreaming about writing a book? Attending the Creator Institute, Dr. Luke takes us through the process of writing a book and how she was able to use her many years of research, corporate experience, and layering in her mom's story of becoming a physician later in life to build a framework that will help you effectively handle setbacks and network with others to achieve and reach your unique destiny.Want to connect with Dr. Natalie Luke? <itunes:title>Are You A Starter Or Finisher?</itunes:title>

What do Gretchen Rubin's "The Four Tendencies" and being a 'starter' or a 'finisher' have to do with moving? EVERYTHING! In this episode, you'll learn what 'tendency' you are per Gretchen Rubin’s The Four Tendencies Quiz and once you know what you are, you will know what could stand in your way when it comes to going after your dreams- you can grab her book or take her digital course like I did!An 'Upholder', whose motto is 'discipline is my freedom', might decide to go after their dreams, make a plan and go after them. A 'Questioner', whose motto is 'I'll comply- if you convince me why,' might need a little convincing to move somewhere but once they decide, they're going to do things their own way. A 'Rebel', whose motto is 'you can't make me, and neither can I,' they might go back and forth many times on moving and even though they know moving is going to be good for them, as long as no one else tells them it will. An 'Obliger', which is what I am and whose motto is 'you can count on me, and I'm counting on you to count on me,' might let everything else get in the way of getting things done…and then have to scramble to get it all done before the movers get there- but they're great helpers to get it done! Listen to it on 'Do The Thing' with Melissa Urban where she talks with Gretchen Rubin. This will help outsmart your 'tendency' if you're putting off your dreams. Or if you're like me and a 'Starter', Future You wants you to become a 'Finisher'! If you just finished this episode and loved it, please leave me a 5 Star Review!

Mariette's On The Move is ready for launch!! This is the very first episode and I couldn't be more excited. On this episode, we talk a little about my experience in moves, my FRED Framework and how to get an earworm out of your head (read the article on Wikihow). I mention the songs 'No Thief Like Fear' and 'Fear is Easy, Love is Hard' off Jason Gray's "A Way To See In The Dark" album. I also reference #4 on that album, listen to it HERE, I want to surprise you with what it is though, it was my theme song for a long time. I'm hoping to convince him to be on the show today, he's got some cool stories!I also mention my friend and Hypnotherapist, Kryssa Bowman out of Bozeman, MT. I can't wait to have her on the show too- we had an amazing conversation about all the different 'parts' of ourselves on a magical drive up to Big Sky, MT where we had a retreat with some of the loveliest people from all over the country. A few years back she made me a personalized meditation that I still use today- she's awesome. You'll love her!Creating a life you don't want to escape from is one of the things we'll be talking about on this show. We'll be taking a granular look at how to optimize your life in your new city, thriving in your new career. What is your Higher Self telling pushing you to pursue? Is your pesky subconscious keeping you safe and grounded? Your subconscious can be a jerk- it likes to keep you safe where you are instead of having you pursue your dreams. It's not as hard as you think.Have you heard of Podopolo? It's a brand new podcasting app that's revolutionizing podcasting through social interaction! <itunes:title>The Four Fears Keeping You Stuck With Dr. Anna Kallschmidt</itunes:title>

Dr. Anna Kallschmidt discusses common fears and challenges people face during transitions, particularly when moving to a new location. She identifies four main fears: the fear of change, the fear of being wrong, the fear of being replaced, and the fear of shame. Dr. Kallschmidt emphasizes the importance of having courage and faith in the face of these fears. She also highlights the need to prioritize what is truly important to oneself when making decisions, rather than succumbing to societal expectations. Ultimately, embracing vulnerability and authenticity can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment. In this part of the conversation, Anna discusses the financial aspects of decision-making and the importance of prioritizing what brings joy. Dr. Kallschmidt emphasizes the need to reflect on personal values and not be influenced by societal pressures. She also talks about the importance of unlearning biases and fear-based thinking. She shares her journey of self-discovery and the exercise of identifying what brought her joy as a child. She also discusses the role of data and biases in decision-making. In this conversation, Mariette Frey and Dr. Anna Kallschmidt discuss various topics related to workplace culture, leadership, and personal growth. They explore the importance of understanding unwritten rules in the workplace, the challenges of navigating different cultures, and the need for clear communication. <itunes:title>Aging Parents? Transitioning Seniors With Care, Guided By Cindy Greer</itunes:title>

Every May, the Administration for Community Living leads the nation's observance of Older Americans Month (OAM), a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities. We round out National Moving Month (May) with honoring the movers that have come before us and we've brought on an expert for that conversation.

In today's episode, Cindy Greer, founder of Transition With Care LLC, discusses senior move management and the challenges older adults experience when downsizing and transitioning to community living. She emphasizes the importance of using the term 'community' instead of 'home' or 'facility' when referring to senior living options. Cindy explains that senior move management involves decluttering, downsizing, move management, packing, unpacking, as well as coordinating the cleaning out of the previous home. She also highlights the emotional attachment to belongings and the need for open conversations about downsizing and future plans.

The term 'solo aging' is introduced to describe the challenges faced by individuals without children or close family members to rely on for support. Transition With Care provides expert guidance and support for seniors and their families before, during and after the moving process. They provide a free consultation and offer a broad range of services, including help with downsizing, custom floorplans, move management, packing and unpacking help. Transition With Care can be as much or as little help as their clients need. The emotional aspect of downsizing and moving is also addressed, with a focus on helping clients look forward to the next step. Transition with Care works with both older adult clients and their adult children, often getting involved when a health event or death occurs. They also collaborate with senior communities, real estate agents, attorneys, and care managers to ensure a smooth transition. The cost of their services is out of pocket, but the value they provide is worth the investment.

Want to support the show?
