This is the first in an entire month of Vampire Movies we are doing throughout October!

In 1922, producers Albin Grau and Enrico Dieckmann hired F.W. Murnau and the screenwriter Henrik Galeen to unofficially adapt Bram Stoker's 1897 Gothic Vampire Novel Dracula for a German Audience. Following in the heels of Galeen's script "The Golem: How He Came into the World" and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in 1920 as popular horror films.

They hoped to change just enough details to not have to pay the Stoker Estate, and changed Count Dracula to Count Orlok, and Gothic London to Germany... hiring Max Shreck to play Count Orlok as a hulking corpse-like visage who carries a plague to Germany.

The hope makes more sense when you realize that Bela Lugosi's iconic portrayal of Count Dracula would come a full decade later.

When it came out, film critics and audiences absolutely hated Showgirls. Elizabeth Berkley, who had only recently come off of Saved By The Bell, took the brunt of that hatred, which ended up destroying her career.

The non-stop gratuitous nudity and passionless sex in the movie ended up netting it an NC-17 rating. However, the campiness (whether accidental or on purpose) and cartoonishness of the movie has led to cult status and newfound popularity.

So we must ask the question: was Showgirls misunderstood? Is it a better movie than it was given credit for? Is the new popularity ironic? Did Verhoeven miss this time?

What does this movie say about the 90's as a whole? Why has it been so hard to shake? And why has no other filmmaker been able to replicate it?
