Lunch Line Lowdown

Every school day, food service directors across the country feed millions of kids, often before the sun is fully up and long after most of campus has gone home. Few people ever hear what that job actually involves. Lunch Line Lowdown is a monthly conversation podcast that changes that, one director at a time.

Each episode, co-hosts Jason Beach and Danielle Johnson sit down with a school food service director or another child nutrition leader to hear their story: what pulled them into this work, what keeps them showing up year after year, the best parts of their day, the hardest parts, and how they get through it all. It's an unscripted, candid format built around real people doing demanding, often invisible work, and it's meant for the professionals who understand exactly what that work costs, as well as anyone curious about what really happens behind the lunch line.

Jason Beach is the Director of Café Services for Oakdale Joint Unified School District (OJUSD) in California, a role he has held since June 2021. A classically trained chef with degrees from Le Cordon Bleu's Scottsdale and Las Vegas campuses, Jason spent his early career at major hospitality brands including Walt Disney World and Hyatt, and later ran his own catering business before moving into school nutrition full time in 2009. He has since become one of California's leading farm-to-school advocates, chairing the Marketing and Public Relations committees for the California School Nutrition Association (CSNA), while serving as President of CSNA Regional Chapter 10 and Co-Chair of the Trayed Competition. He was named CalSNA's 2026 Director Mentor of the Year, and his work bringing scratch cooking and local food into school cafeterias was featured in the Emmy Award winning documentary "Hunger in the Valley of Plenty" (KQED and the Center for Investigative Reporting, 2015). He lives in Atwater, California, with his family and spends his free time on the disc golf course.

Danielle Johnson is a school nutrition leader, speaker, and trainer with more than twenty years of experience serving in and strengthening child nutrition programs. With experience at both the state and district level, she understands the many moving parts of school nutrition, from compliance and operations to leadership, culture, and the people who make it happen. She currently serves as a Director for a California school district and is passionate about helping professionals recognize their influence on their programs, students, and communities. Known for bringing humor, energy, and real-world experience into the room, Danielle has presented for organizations including the School Nutrition Association, the National Child and Adult Care Food Program Association, and the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom, and provides speaking and training to districts nationwide, focused on leadership and staff wellness. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition Management from Arizona State University and, based in Fresno, enjoys family time, pickleball, and a good book.

Together, Jason and Danielle bring decades of experience, a shared sense of humor, and genuine respect for the people who run this overlooked corner of public service. Lunch Line Lowdown is for the directors, managers, and staff who feed the next generation.
