Negative Command: “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world…”

Passive voice

Translation: “Stop allowing yourselves to be molded by the influences and pressures of this present world system.”

Application: We are to be SEPARATE from the world’s values. -1 Jn. 2:15-17

Summary: The world’s system seeks to SEDUCE us from our love for Christ by PLEASURE, POSSESSIONS, and POSITION.

Positive Command: “…but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Passive voice
Imperative

Translation: “But allow God to completely change your inward thinking and outward behavior by cooperating wholeheartedly moment-by-moment with the Spirit’s renewing process.”

We are involved in an invisible WAR, a cosmic conflict that has eternal implications.

We must RESPECT our foe, but not FEAR him – become acutely aware of his “methods,” but not be preoccupied by them.
As believers in Christ, we do not fight “for” victory, we fight “FROM” victory. In Christ’s power we are invincible!

Creation versus evolution: the never-ending debate, right? So many want us to believe that science and faith are incompatible. But what if they’re not? What if science actually supports faith and what if faith actually informs science? Chip provides helpful insight to the current debate, in a time when the disagreements are more intense than ever.

Main Points Defining our terms:

Microevolution: The small changes that only happen within a species. Some examples of microevolution are the mosquito’s ability to resist DDT after years of exposure, and the ability of different bacterial strains to resist penicillin.
Macroevolution: The vertical transition between species (from one kind of species to another kind) evolving to account for all animal and human life.
Creation: The belief that God created all things out of nothing, as described in the Bible in the book of Genesis. All of life in its rich complexity happened as the result of the all-powerful, all-knowing, sovereign God of the universe who is Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

Today's four major positions:

Group 1: Classic Creationism - The literal biblical account
Group 2: Classic Evolution - Random change and natural selection
Group 3: Theistic Evolution - God-supervised evolution
Group 4: Intelligent Design - A designer of some kind

How did life begin?

Evolution: Life’s beginning was unsupervised, impersonal, unpredictable, a natural process. The beginning of life was random, undirected without either plan or purpose.
Creation: Defined by the Bible. God spoke.

Why did life begin?

Evolution: Life began as a pure accident. It was random chance. There was no design, no plan, no meaning, no emotions, no purpose, and no value.
Creation: You are the special creation of a good and all-powerful God. You are the climax of His creation. Not only is your kind unique, but you are unique among your kind.

How did various plants and animals develop?

Evolution: A simple cell evolved to more complex plants and animals through the process of time, chance, natural selection, mutations, and survival of the fittest over a period of billions of years.
Creation: God created various plants, animals, kinds, and species in a harmonic balance to reflect His attributes and character.

Complexity of Life

Cells: Thanks to today’s more powerful microscopes, we know that a single-cell organism, the most basic unit of any living thing, is incredibly complex.
DNA: Is like the software of the cell, the computer program that makes it work. In fact, if you took a tablespoon and filled it to the top with this DNA, your tablespoon could contain the precise instructions to build every single species of organism that has ever existed on the planet.
Astronomy: “Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover. That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.” - Robert Jastrow

Do you have a difficult person in your life - a person who makes you nuts? Do you wonder, "Is there a Godly response to this person?" If you’re faced with that person right now, join Chip as he shares how to deal with the difficult people in your life.

Main Points

Thesis: Sometimes the person we most want God to remove from our lives is the person we need the most.

Why? Because:

The way we treat difficult people reveals the true condition of our heart.
Difficult people cause us to grow in ways we couldn’t on our own.
The most distinguishing mark of Jesus’ followers is their love for those they would not and could not love on their own.

What does “bearing with” others look like?

With humility – See them and treat them as people of equal or superior value than yourself.
With gentleness – Extend undeserved acts of kindness and acceptance that are foreign to you with this person.
With patience – Refuse to allow your irritation and frustration to erupt into negative thoughts, feelings, and comments to or about them.
With forgiveness – Release them from your internal desire to pay them back for the frustration, difficulty, and wounds they inflicted upon you.

Why is “bearing with” difficult people so important?

It increases my appreciation of God’s love toward me.
It demonstrates God’s love toward them.
It changes me where I need it most.
It communicates the reality and authenticity of Christ to the world.

Conclusion: Sometimes the person I most want God to remove from my life is the very person I need the most!

Action Steps:

Identify the most difficult person in your life right now.
Begin praying everyday for this person for the next two weeks.
Stop consciously avoiding them and start seeing them like Christ does. (see Colossians 3:12)
Serve them in some specific way this week.
Discuss these action steps with your friends, family, growth group, Bible study, and/or ministry team.

Question #2: What kind of prayers fill our emotional reservoir?

Prayers that fill our emotional tanks include three parts and are called Psalms of praise: | 1. Recount your gain. | 2. Recall God's character. | 3. Resolve to thank Him. |
Examples to follow when you feel "good" due to: | God’s forgiveness, healing. --Psalm 103 | God’s goodness and love. --Psalm 136 | God’s mighty acts, compassion. --Psalm 145 | God’s faithfulness, creation. --Psalm 146-150 |

Conclusion:

"Ups" and "downs" are normal.
Emotional health demands we move beyond the "silencingof our symptoms."
Emotional healing is a gift from God. Go to "The" Counselor before you go to a counselor.
"Getting stuck" is also normal and God uses people, in conjunction with prayer, to mend our emotional wounds.
Extreme wounds, at times, demand extended and specialized care.

David was tempted to be afraid, but he declared, “I will not fear,” because the Lord was his light and deliverer.
Wait = Where is your hope? Where is your confidence?

Verse 2: “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.”

Bible reading: Though it may start as a duty, with help and discipline, it becomes a delight as you learn.
Meditation: To engraft truth into your heart and life so you begin to think God's thoughts and look at the world through His perspective, seeing fears and challenges in light of His promises and presence.

Verse 3: He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.

In a world where people are trying to overcome their fear, I will choose to thrive.
God assures that following His path will produce a life of blessings and success over time.

Verses 4-6: The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

The wicked, like worthless chaff separated from wheat, will be blown away and rejected in judgment.
God, the all-knowing creator, promises to shepherd those who reject the world's messages and say "yes" to Him through His Word, guiding them through mistakes as they seek a righteous life.

Principles for sharing the Gospel:

Rely on the Holy Spirit, not scripts or tracts
People need to experience the power and presence of God

Contextualizing the Gospel for your audience:

Contextualization is about communicating in a language they can understand.
It’s not about popularity or compromise, it’s about clarity.
Avoid using Christian language that is foreign and strange to secular culture.
Jesus used words and imagery that was very relevant to the audience He spoke to.

Don’t use the Bible as an argumentative authority:

“The Bible says,” is not a compelling or effective approach for post-Christian people.
Leverage the truth, that is experientially verifiable, taught in the Bible, not the authority of the Bible itself.

Communicating the Gospel effectively in the context that God has called you to:

There is power in your story
Take a risk and invite a response. Give people an opportunity to say yes or no to Jesus

Discipleship relationships:

Doesn’t start the day someone commits to a local church, but the moment they meet a follower of Christ.
It’s about doing life together, not a weekly event.
Doesn’t have to happen in a classroom or a church hall, it can happen in the context and environment people come from.
It’s intentional: we guide the relationship purposefully to see spiritual growth, making the most of every opportunity.
Should lead to multiplication.

To kick off this series, Aaron and Chip sit down to discuss why this next generation is desperate for and ready to receive - the hope only Jesus can offer.

Main Points

Three key realities to engage post-Christian culture:

Secular people have become suspicious of religious institutions and are far less likely to walk into a church.
Secular people today do not have the same assumptions as previous generations.
Secular people are open to spirituality.

Four key influences on global youth culture:

Entertainment Industry (Music, film, theater, sports)
Internet Stars via social media platforms.
Video Games (is bigger than Hollywood where the average 21 year old male has spent 10,000 hours playing video games).
Pornography is a pervasive and unashamedly part of many daily routines. Sexuality is just a personal pursuit of happiness; harmless.

Philosophical pillars:

Secularism – Faith is private and not meant to be pushed on others.
Relativism – There is no absolute moral truth.
Acceptance – Tolerance is not enough, you must affirm.

Four big worldview questions:

Origin – Where did life come from? How did life begin?
Morality – What is right and wrong and who decides?
Purpose – What is the purpose of life?
Destiny – What happens after we die?

Predominant worldview:

Secular Humanism – the religion of self. The idea is that God has been replace, man is at the center, and there’s no outside authority that can tell me how to live my life. The key to happiness is found within.
What should our response be?- Nehemiah 1:4; 1 Corinthians 4:20; 1 Thessalonians 2:8

Sometimes the truth really HURTS! Getting straight talk from a friend is about as fun as getting a speeding ticket. But we all need people in our lives who will honestly level with us! Chip explains why it’s so important to be a truth-telling-best-friend.

Main Points Why must we admonish one another?

It is a command. --Colossians 3:16, 1 Thessalonians 5:14
Because we all have “blind spots.” --Psalm 19:12; 139:23-24
To become godly, holy, mature Christians. --Colossians 1:28-29
It cultivates deep, loving relationships. --1 Thessalonians 2:8
Because sin destroys a believer’s life. --Romans 6:23
Because we are members of one another. Unchecked sin impacts the whole body --Romans 12:4-5

Who is competent to admonish?

It requires a life "full of goodness"
It requires a life "filled with knowledge"
It requires a "heart filled with love"

How to admonish - "the process":

Step #1: Examine your own life. --Matthew 7:3-5
Step #2: Examine the Word. --2 Timothy 2:15
Step #3: Examine your motives. --1 Corinthians 4:14
Step #4: Set a time to meet privately. --Matthew 18:15
Step #5: Ask specific questions to confirm data, and disarm the situation.
Step #6: Tenderly point out the sin; show them the Scripture that applies to them.
Step #7: If possible, develop a game-plan, timetable, and follow-up meeting for support and follow-through.

Conclusion: Admonition is God’s antibiotic for the church; done Biblically, it is the most loving thing you can do … for all concerned. Broadcast Resource
