If you have not yet listened to episodes 1-3, we highly recommend you do so.

Deb and MaryAnne dig deep into the neglect and abuse young Adrian Jones endured at the hands of his father and stepmother, as well as the failures of the child welfare system set in place to protect him.

Adrian Jones endured months of abuse at the hands of his parents before his death. The investigation revealed heart-wrenching videos of the abuse captured by surveillance cameras in the home. The failure of the child protective services to intervene and protect Adrian was evident, with numerous calls made by concerned citizens reporting the abuse. Adrian's extended family had lost contact with him, and the system failed to keep track of his case as his parents moved between Kansas and Missouri.

Deb and MaryAnne discuss the need for change in the child welfare system and the importance of advocating for the protection of children. We also also discuss the shortcomings of Adrian's Law and the efforts to improve it. If you have not yet listened to espisode 1, we highly recommend you do so, then, check back here!

During this episode, Deb and MaryAnne discuss the case of Zoey Felix, a five-year-old girl who died under tragic circumstances. They explore the background of Zoey's mother, Holly Jo Felix, and the legal troubles she faced. They also discuss the dynamics between Holly Jo and Zoe's father, Zeke Felix Guerrera, and the challenges they encountered in providing a stable environment for Zoey.

The conversation highlights the failures of the child welfare system and the need for change. The hosts share personal insights and interviews with Zeke to provide different perspectives on the case. Mickel Cherry, a man with a history of criminal charges, was living with Holly Jo and Zeke before the death of Zoey Felix. Cherry's past includes disorderly conduct, animal cruelty, and criminal trespass.

On September 5, 2023, concerned neighbors called the police when Zoe was left home alone with Cherry. Two weeks later, Zeke ordered Cherry and Caitlin to leave their residence. Zoe was later found brutally attacked and left for dead at a gas station. Cherry has been charged with capital murder and rape, and his trial is pending. The community is calling for justice and accountability in Zoe's case.

If you are aware of a family who may need support, there are resources in the community that can help.

This is episode 1 of 6. We recommend you listening to season 1 in chronological order.

In our series debut, Deb and MaryAnne introduce you to the tragic death of five-year-old Zoey Felix and the shortcomings of the child welfare system. Little Zoey was discovered unresponsive at a gas station in Topeka, Kansas in October 2023. As we investigate further, we highlight the numerous reports of neglect and abuse made to authorities. Further discussion delves into the response of law enforcement and child welfare agencies, questioning their handling of this case.

Zoey was eventually placed in her father's care due to the numerous abuse charges and neglect charges her mother had on file. We'll hold a deep discussion on these circumstances, then focus on the actions and decisions made by Kansas authorities and the flaws in the child welfare system.

The conversation highlights the criteria for determining ideal living conditions and the responsibilities of caseworkers, the role neighbors played in supporting Zoey and the lack of communication, plus intervention from DCF.

If you are aware of a family who may need support, there are resources in the community that can help. Visit thecenterforchildren.org to learn how laws and advocacy can make a difference. If you suspect a child may be the victim of abuse or neglect, you are urged to call the Kansas Protection Report Center at 1-800-922-5330. You can also call 1-800-CHILDREN or 1-800-332-6378.
