<itunes:title>Doubting Faithfully w Keith Long</itunes:title>

In this episode, we sit down with the ideas from Doubting Faithfully by Keith Long to explore what it means to deconstruct faith without abandoning it entirely. Instead of treating doubt as failure, we examine how it can be a sign of growth—a willingness to move beyond inherited certainty and into something more honest, even if it’s less comfortable.

We also dig into the unsettling pull sometimes felt within high-control religious spaces—the sense that questioning could cost you everything, yet not questioning might cost you yourself. From there, we wrestle with what it means to hold tension: to entertain difficult ideas without immediately accepting or rejecting them. Why is that so hard? What systems, fears, or social pressures keep people from engaging deeply with their own beliefs? And how might learning to sit with uncertainty actually reflect a deeper kind of spiritual maturity?

Ultimately, this conversation invites us to loosen our grip on needing to be right. What if being wrong isn’t something to fear, but something to learn from? What if faith isn’t about certainty, but about curiosity, humility, and the courage to keep going anyway? Pull up a chair—this is a space where doubt isn’t the end of faith, but part of how it becomes something real.

Keith Long has been a Lutheran pastor for 14 years and is the author of three books, Doubting Faithfully: Confessions of a Skeptical Pastor, Growing Spirit Wise: A Heretic’s Guide to Resurrection and Eternal Life, and Moviemakers, a novella. Keith has also written for New Testament scholar Bart D. Ehrman's blog, studies expanded consciousness in his free time, and loves his home state of Minnesota where he resides with his family.

His website is www.authorkeithlong.com and is currently developing a Lecture Series entitled "Jesus Beyond Christianity" 7 in-person and online presentations exploring pre-Christian culture and the future of religion.

Attributions: ON8FDNIHEAKJ8GXS

Episode Notes — Xtian Leftists Against Christofascism

Welcome to Grub & Grace, a space that pushes back on the idea that Christianity belongs to one political ideology. Here, we take seriously the need to question what we’ve been taught—especially when faith gets tangled up with power. In this episode, we confront how Christian Nationalism continues to shape public life, and how certain church leaders have traded prophetic witness for proximity to empire—dressing up domination, exclusion, and nationalism in the language of “God’s will.”

We dig into what some are calling an “attack on empathy”—how compassion itself is being reframed as weakness or even heresy in certain spaces. From policies that harm marginalized communities to rhetoric that dehumanizes immigrants, queer folks, and BIPOC communities, we explore how systems built to benefit cis-het white power structures ultimately dehumanize everyone. This includes a hard look at the realities of immigration enforcement and the fear it instills in families and communities, raising urgent questions about justice, dignity, and who gets to be seen as fully human.

At its core, this episode is about reclaiming faith from the grips of empire. What does it look like to follow a tradition rooted in liberation rather than control? How do we resist forms of Christianity that align with fascism while building something more honest, more just, and more life-giving in its place? Pull up a chair—this is a conversation that refuses easy answers but insists on something better.

Anthony DePice is an activist and an organizer.

In this episode, we start with a simple but disarming question: Who is our neighbor? And we don’t stop there—we flip it on its head and retort with: Who acts LIKE a neighbor?

Using Fred Rogers as a guide, we explore what emotional intelligence looks like in practice—how curiosity, empathy, and emotional awareness can shape the way we show up for one another. We revisit his well-known idea of “the helpers,” asking what it really means to look for them—and more importantly, to be one—in a world that often feels fractured and overwhelmed.

From there, we wrestle with the moral weight of First They Came by Martin Niemöller, reflecting on silence, complicity, and the cost of failing to see others as our neighbors until it’s too late.

This episode holds together tenderness and challenge—inviting us to expand who we include in our circle of care, to resist the instinct to look away, and to consider what it might actually take to answer that question, not just in theory, but in practice.

Ian McConnell is a pastor of The Fabric church in Minneapolis, MN.

In this episode, we examine two common ideologies often promoted in religious rehab and recovery spaces: “Once an addict, always an addict” and “J-O-Y: Jesus first, others second, yourself last.” While these ideas are frequently presented as spiritually grounded wisdom, we explore how they can become harmful when used as the foundation for addiction treatment.

We discuss how “once an addict, always an addict” may reinforce shame, hopelessness, and a fixed identity around addiction rather than recovery, and how the J-O-Y framework can encourage chronic self-neglect, poor boundaries, and the belief that personal needs are inherently less important than everyone else’s.

This episode looks at why these teachings persist, why many people find comfort in them, and how even well-intentioned beliefs can create damaging outcomes when applied uncritically in recovery settings.

This episode we're getting into what's known generally as the troubled teen industry. There are many facilities and programs within this term, but today we will be looking into the treatment program known as Teen Challenge.

Teen Challenge is often described as a place where faith and recovery meet — a program helping struggling teens find a new path. But depending on who you talk to, the story can sound very different.

I am joined today by Lynn Green, a former student of these facilities before she began researching them, which is now an essential aspect of her work. She has a unique experience and story that we explore and are able to dive deeper into the philosophy of this particular treatment facility.

Tik Tok: @lynn_green1

Instagram: @lynn.m.green

Disclaimer: Some of what we discuss may be triggering for some, so be sure to be aware of that. There are things we will say that may not equate to the same experience for every person. Even the way every facility and affiliate of Teen Challenge is run can vary a bit. We understand that our critique of Teen Challenge does not speak for all treatment programs within the troubled teen industry, and there are programs that are doing some very helpful work.

Leaving a cult or high-control group is often far more difficult than outsiders understand. In this episode, we explore the psychological and emotional barriers that make departure so overwhelming for those inside these environments.

We begin by examining accelarousal—the intense stress response triggered by major acceleration events such as sudden doctrinal shifts, leadership crises, punishment, or escalating demands within a group. We discuss how prolonged exposure to these events can overwhelm the nervous system and contribute to acute stress disorder, leaving members in a state of fear, confusion, and emotional paralysis.

From there, we look at the many reasons people struggle to leave high-control groups, including fear of punishment, loss of family and community, identity collapse, financial dependence, and the terror of facing an uncertain world outside the group.

Finally, we discuss practical and compassionate ways to support someone who may be trying to leave a cultic environment—what helps, what harms, and why patience and empathy matter far more than confrontation.

This episode offers a deeper understanding of why leaving a cult is not simply a matter of “walking away,” but often a painful and destabilizing process that can reshape every part of a person’s life.

What actually makes a cult… a cult?

In this episode, we break down the mechanics of high-control groups and explore why cults are far more psychologically sophisticated than most people realize. Rather than focusing on strange beliefs or sensational stereotypes, we examine the systems of control that define cultic environments.

We begin by asking the deceptively simple question: What is a cult? From there, we unpack the eight patterns of thought reform commonly found in high-control groups—psychological tactics used to shape belief, suppress dissent, and create dependency.

We also explore the six conditions that make undue influence possible, looking at how ordinary people can be manipulated in the right circumstances through isolation, authority, fear, and environmental control.

Finally, we apply these frameworks to a real-world example by examining a former cult, showing how these dynamics operate in practice and why leaving such groups is often far more difficult than outsiders assume.

Whether your interest is psychological, religious, sociological, or just morbidly curious—this episode offers a deeper look at how cults function, why they work, and what makes them so hard to escape.

This Bite Sized Episode peels back the fuzzy green wrapping paper on a figure we assume we’ve already figured out. Spoiler: we haven’t. The Grinch is more than a sour-faced holiday thief with a bad attitude and a questionable relationship to joy—he’s a surprisingly layered character with a long shadow and some real philosophical bite. In short, this green recluse has range.

We’ll explore the Grinch’s many incarnations and what they reveal about belief, culture, and the strange ways we tell moral stories—past and present. Expect detours into symbolism, spirituality, and a few ideas that usually get shoved to the edge of the sleigh and avoided with a thirty-nine-and-a-half-foot pole.

Before you decide this episode is proof that our hearts are “two sizes too small,” stick around. Yes, there may be some garlic in the soul—but as the song reminds us, one person’s toxic sludge is another person’s potpourri. So grab some roast beast, check your Christmas cheer at the door (or don’t), and come see how the Grinch didn’t just steal Christmas—he complicated it.

Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you listen.

Check out our website at grubandgrace.com, or find us on our socials:

Instagram: @grubandgracepodcast

Facebook

X: @grubandgrace

Cover art generated by Adobe Firefly AI model Gemini 2.5 (w/Nano Banana)

Music Attributions:

O'er The River Nore: UXIDYUKIJRPMLPIG

Winter Wonder: LVNOVID1PHKUZ9UF

Christmas Ballroom: 9PZD6AQSBUTGKFVZ

In The Quiet Night: XO8BHGTLKTZPVHM2

St Nick's Workshop: NGW9HNQEF0LCGSBJ

Sugar Plum: JREHXR91OMGPTTEQ

Christmas Time Is Coming: L566O5WTZQDCJCCV

Mistletoe Farms: 2CTL6XME1DNHAYH5

Yuletide Dawn: IF7ED4B4MZWVOFJX

Mrs Claus: SW05O3E0MYZLVDSF

We Wish You A Merry Christmas: JGMAAWLOXJUOQUQ4

Harp- Arpeggio - Nordic Tune - Shepherds Melody.wav by gertraut_hecher -- https://freesound.org/s/564909/ -- License: Attribution NonCommercial 4.0

Celtic Whistle Melody by f-r-a-g-i-l-e -- https://freesound.org/s/520148/ -- License: Creative Commons 0

In this episode, we journey through ancient mythologies and religious lore, uncovering how different cultures have defined and described these shadowy beings. We’ll explore infamous demons of early civilizations, trace their influence through Jewish and Christian traditions, and ask the big questions: Who is Satan really, and how does he fit into the broader story of the Bible? By looking at the evolution of these figures, we reveal how demons reflect cultural fears, moral struggles, and the eternal human search for meaning.

Are demons real—or are they a story we’ve been telling ourselves for centuries? In this episode, we attempt to offer an alternative view of looking at demons as well as how the origins of demons may just be literary and cultural creations and how the idea evolved across history. From ancient texts to medieval folklore and modern horror, demons have been less about actual creatures lurking in the dark and more about shaping human behavior. We unpack how the concept of demonic forces has been used to provoke fear, enforce moral codes, and ultimately control communities. By looking at demons through the lens of psychology, storytelling, and power, we reveal how this enduring myth says more about us than about the supernatural.

In our third Star Wars trilogy episode, we explore how Star Wars—and especially the series Andor—portray resistance not as a grand myth, but as a gritty, personal fight against oppression. Andor brings a raw, grounded lens to rebellion, showing the everyday sacrifices, moral compromises, and quiet acts of defiance that fuel real change. From imperial surveillance to systemic injustice, the show mirrors the very real struggles faced in our own socio-political world today. What does it mean to resist when the odds feel insurmountable? And how can fiction inspire real-world action?

Join us as we connect galaxies far, far away to the pressing realities of here and now.

This episode should be free of any meaningful spoilers.

In part 2 of our Star Wars trilogy, we dive deep into the dark heart of Star Wars, using The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire by Chris Kempshall as our guide. Drawing sharp parallels between the fictional Empire and real-world history, we explore how Star Wars mirrors the rise of authoritarian regimes, propaganda, militarism, and the slow erosion of democracy. We break down the inner workings of the Galactic Empire—from its bureaucracy and chain of command to its use of fear and control—and examine how its creation wasn’t just evil, but eerily familiar.

What does the fall of the Republic teach us about our own world? And how can sci-fi help us better understand the systems we live in? Join us for a thoughtful, galactic deep dive into power, history, and the myth that continues to speak volumes.

You can find Dr. Chris Kempshall's book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire here.

Music in episode by Luis Humanoide & Cody Martin with permission and/or copyright usage allowed.

In Part 1 of our Star Wars trilogy, we journey to a galaxy far, far away to explore the deeply political roots of the beloved saga. From the fall of the Republic to the rise of the Empire, Star Wars has always been more than just lightsabers and space battles—it’s a reflection of real-world power struggles, corruption, and resistance. We unpack the allegories behind the Jedi, the dangers of authoritarianism, and how George Lucas used sci-fi to comment on war, democracy, and the fragility of freedom. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, this episode peels back the layers of myth to reveal the very real politics beneath.

The rebellion has only just begun.

You can find Dr. Chris Kempshall's book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire here.

Music in episode by Luis Humanoide & Cody Martin with permission and/or copyright usage allowed.

Gather ‘round the campfire for an episode that flickers with heat, smoke, and truth. In this special fireside edition, we share true stories of people who were labeled criminals. The individuals presented in these stories were thrust in the situations they found themselves in, and they responded in kind. We explore how the lines between legality and morality blur when the law serves power over people. Morality can be messy and such a difficult concept to define, and it's through stories and recorded history that allows us to hone in on what that may look like. How often is justice found not in the courts, but in the courage to resist?

Through gripping tales and thoughtful discussion, we unpack the dangers of legalism and the transformative power of civil disobedience. Whether it’s confronting racial injustice, environmental destruction, or everyday ethical dilemmas, we ask: when is it not only acceptable—but necessary—to say no? This episode is a call to conscience, a spark of rebellion, and a reminder that justice sometimes starts with a simple act of defiance.

Søren Kierkegaard once posed this scenario:

“In a theatre it happened that a fire started off stage. The clown came out to tell the audience. They thought it was a joke and applauded. He told them again, and they became still more hilarious. This is the way, I suppose, that the world will be destroyed-amid the universal hilarity of wits and wags who think it is all a joke.”

Life is good at producing absurdities. It’s easy to get bogged down in the mucky muck of it all, but what if we were able to find ways to step back and laugh at the oddities presented before us.

Omni joins us today as we discuss life, politics, family lineage, and finding discernment through it all.

Individuals who, despite the compounding impact they had for generations to come, were so easily forgotten amongst the noise of the world.

Easter, a celebration and remembrance through the death of Jesus Christ…or more commonly eulogized as a lesson about the immortality of the soul and the promise of eternal life someday in heaven. That is, at least, my experience of a common message I would hear growing up in the church. This first episode will be very heavy on history and mythologies, and if you stay tuned to tomorrow’s episode, that will be application and how this all relates to the world today. My hope for these two episodes is to talk about questions that I have been wrestling with over the years as well as bringing in concepts that may challenge your perception of how we see Easter and how the life and death of Jesus Christ speaks into our lives moving forward.

Welcome to Grub & Grace, where food puns are my jam - they spread happiness. I am your host, Mark Flower, and I am on a journey to listen and learn through discussion and good-faith dialogue. So, I have invited several of my friends over to share a meal and chat about the Bible, faith, and whatever else happens to be on our minds.

I am not a theologian or expert by any means, but I do hope that I can bring my experiences and limited knowledge to the table. My hope for you is that you will be able to allow yourself an open mind as we present different perspectives on various topics. There is plenty of room at the table so I invite you to pull up a chair and share in this meal with us while we all learn together.

Music: ‘Everything You Need’ by Fleece Mob

Graphics and visuals: by Root & Branch Creative.

You can visit our website grubandgrace.com for more information, as well as our socials on facebook, instagram, and X.
