<![CDATA[Gender stereotype, societal cultures and gender inequality in the workplace]]> https://rss.com/podcasts/gender-stereotype-societal-cultures-and-gender-inequality-in-the-workplace The purpose of this essay is to explain gender inequality in the workplace in the UK and South Korea. First, I offer a brief historical overview of the roots of gender inequality in the UK and South Korea. Second, drawing on the psychological theories of gender stereotypes and their consequences, I posit that pervasive and often unconscious gender stereotypes negatively affect women's work experiences and careers. Third, adopting a cultural lens, I posit that the societal cultures of gender egalitarianism and performance orientation play an important role in the shaping of gender inequality at the societal level. Comparing two contrasting cultures representing a Western and Eastern culture with unique histories, I demonstrate how gender stereotypes and inequality are manifested in the workplace. I conclude my essay with a conceptual model which integrates my investigation such that how gender stereotypes and societal cultures jointly affect gender inequality in the workplace. This study contributes to how we should understand the role of culture and stereotypes in the shaping of gender inequality and how we might address them.
