Hello, my name is Fadillah Ross and this would be my first podcast. This episode will be covering one of the main themes that was uncovered in the book The Other Wes Moore. A brief bit of background on the book before I begin The Other Wes Moore tells the story of boys who live in the same neighborhood growing up in a hostile situation and trying to find their way out. The storyline covers two Wes Moores’ who grew up in a low income valued neighborhood while encountering issues with illegal drugs and violence. After reading the whole book one of the themes that stood out was Family, Friendship, and Brotherhood. Family, Friendship, and Brotherhood is more than just three meaningless words, but it is a powerful construction of the livelihood that both Wes Moores’ experienced. Through the theme one can see that the book doesn’t just cover the lives of the two Wes Moores’, but how the influence of each category can or can’t shape a person into who they may become. Although I’ve spoken about the theme as a whole I am going to go in depth and break down each piece as its own category. The first part of the three words is family, and as everyone knows family is an extremely important part of a persons’ life. Families have the ability to make or break a person, and when it came to the story both Wes Moores’ had strong family connections and their families had a lot of high hopes. Despite the similarities that appeared when it came to the idealization of family there were very distinct differences. Both of the Wes Moores’ lost their fathers for different reasons there was even a point in the story where one of the Wes Moores’ told the other that his father wasn’t there because he couldn’t be, but his wasn’t there because he chose not to be, and based on those circumstances they were raised by single mothers along with other family members. Not having any type of family member in your life can cause a huge change in balance. Even though both men had family, only one Wes Moores’ mother pushed her son to find a better edge, and hold on to the positivity in an ultimately negative society while they lived with the grandparents who were also helpful in raising Wes. One Wes Moore had amazing role models willing to teach and help the child grow whereas the other Wes Moore had negative role models by not truly being there for the child, and allowing him to flaunt his negative behavior. After family comes friendship which also was important in the story. ( To be continued in voice not!)
