<itunes:title>Movie Review: The Best Little "Chicken Ranch" In Texas</itunes:title>

In this episode of Dolly's Biggest Fan, things look a little different. Instead of a solo deep dive, I’m joined by my friend Amy Berlin, a retired attorney and improviser in Richmond, Virginia, for a movie night conversation centered on The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Together, we talk Dolly on screen: her performance, her presence, and the way this musical uses humor and heart to explore community, morality, and public judgment. From big ensemble numbers to quieter moments, we reflect on what still resonates, what feels complicated, and why this movie is ... strange.

This episode is looser, conversational, and silly!

Disclaimer: Topics discussed in this episode are not intended for young audiences. Listener discretion be advised.

🦋 Thanks for listening.

Movie Synopsis (SPOILER ALERTS):

Set in a small Texas town, the film centers on the Chicken Ranch, a long-standing, discreetly tolerated brothel run by the warm but shrewd Miss Mona (Dolly Parton). For generations, the town has looked the other way: local officials, law enforcement, and even families quietly accept the Ranch as part of the community’s ecosystem, and because well.. Miss Mona funded a lot of the civic needs of the town monetarily and likely otherwise for their silence and protection.

Trouble begins when sensationalist Houston television reporter Melvin P. Thorpe (Dom DeLuise) stumbles onto the story. Hungry for ratings and moral outrage, Thorpe launches a crusade against the Chicken Ranch, turning it into a statewide scandal. His broadcasts whip up public pressure, forcing politicians, especially the once-complicit Governor (Charles Dunning), to publicly condemn the establishment to save face.

At the same time, Miss Mona is romantically involved with Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd (Burt Reynolds), who genuinely cares for her but is torn between his love, his badge, and his loyalty to the town. As media scrutiny intensifies, Ed Earl is forced to enforce the law, even though it means shutting down the Ranch and breaking Mona’s heart.

Despite public protests and the clear hypocrisy of those in power, the Chicken Ranch is ultimately closed. The women leave town together, maintaining their dignity and solidarity. Will Miss Mona and Ed Earl part ways or will true love conquer all?

FUN FACT: This story is loosely based off a REAL STORY!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Portions of music from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas are used in this episode for purposes of commentary, criticism, and appreciation under the Fair Use doctrine of the U.S. Copyright Act, Section 107.
