Why the hell are we watching them?

Donald Trump has invoked that same extraordinary standard in the war with Iran: unconditional surrender.

So where is it?

In this episode, Doc G & The Discussants compare the administration’s early confidence and declarations of victory with the war as it actually stands today. Iran has not unconditionally surrendered. The conflict has not simply disappeared. And the Strait of Hormuz—opened, closed, threatened, reopened and explained differently depending upon the day—has become part of an increasingly complicated story about what victory is supposed to mean.

Then there are the promises. Trump campaigned as the president who would keep America out of new wars and end the seemingly endless ones. We examine those promises against the decisions that brought the United States here—and ask what happened to them.

And when Americans complain about higher gasoline prices, Trump has pointed the finger at oil companies for charging too much. That raises another question: Who gets to decide when a price is excessive? We look at that argument alongside what Trump himself charges for hotel rooms, rounds of golf, watches, sneakers and other products bearing his name.

Finally, we come back to the question that matters most: How does this war end? What would victory actually look like? What happens if the administration cannot achieve the unconditional surrender it invoked? And what does the outcome mean for a presidency that promised something very different?

This isn't 1945. Iran isn't Imperial Japan. And those differences are precisely why the comparison is worth examining.

The wordplay has nothing to do with Abdul El-Sayed's religion or ethnicity. It comes from politics—and from the leaked campaign audio in which El-Sayed said he didn't want to comment on the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei because “a lot of people in Dearborn” were sad.

Now El-Sayed has won Michigan's Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, defeating the establishment-backed Haley Stevens and putting one of the country's most closely watched progressive campaigns on the November ballot.

Doc G & The Discussants examine the candidate rather than the caricature: El-Sayed's economic agenda, Medicare for All, his position on U.S. aid to Israel, his views on Israel and the Palestinians, the Khamenei recording, and his continuing association with Hasan Piker—even after Piker's infamous 9/11 remark became an issue in the campaign. El-Sayed has called that remark “dumb” and said Piker disavowed it.

And then comes the larger question we've been asking since Communism Anyone?

El-Sayed does not call himself a democratic socialist; he has described himself as a capitalist. So why are ideas and political forces once associated with the activist left becoming increasingly consequential in Democratic electoral politics? And after Michigan Democrats actually chose El-Sayed, are we still talking about the political fringe—or are we watching the party change?
