Life is full of obstacles, misconceptions, misguided ideas, and on the flipside amazing teachings and practices to balance it all out. The Dharma Things podcast gives people with experiences and explanations on life a voice, and pushes us to realise we are all often of the same thinking and experience. Sometimes unthought of perspectives, sometimes unaccepted ideas. It's all in there.

My name is Miz DeShannon, and in curating the podcast I'll be gathering many conversations with people I respect and admire. People from different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, whose stories and experiences cross similar subjects; ancestry, belonging, discovery, self-development.

The common thread though – Dharma. My hope is that in these sessions you can find some guidance towards your Dharma, some refuge, or respite, knowledge, or pure joy….

Suddi Raval, along with his band Together, created one of the biggest tracks of the rave scene - revolutionary not only in what it contained on a musical level, but what it sampled (the last ever Blackburn rave crowd), and how it became pivotal in the scene. When gatherings of thousands of young people came together (without any social media) it was a calling, a spiritual experience, a dancing revolution. Something which could have grown to be a cultural explosion akin to hip-hop was dampened by the authorities, but this led to Suddi and his bandmates making more and more music for the masses turning house music into the increasingly popular genre we have today. And it was all made in his head - without a single piece of sheet music or a piano in sight!

Dharma Things podcast, with Tanya Markul: writer, poet, motivator, advocate of the imagination, an American in Denmark, mother most importantly. Healing and revealing the emotional journey of life with words, Tanya has repeatedly journeyed through self-reflection and deep healing to feed her fairly constant creative output. Somehow finding the energy to be pregnant and self-publish, BOTH times she's presented the world with a collection of her works, she uses her depth of life experience and her unbounded creativity to give a voice to things that are voiceless for some people, to create a connection and a sense of understanding for emotions that live in the body and have no words... to heal, feel, and reveal.

Known in real life as Jenny Rossander, her career has very quickly become far-reaching, as has her reputation for standing up and campaigning for equality across the creative world. Jenny has stood on panels and debates alongside leading politicians, at the same time as winning multiple awards for her own increasingly incredible work. In this chat, we touch on many things including the way generalising 'sexualisation of women' doesn't always explain behaviours in different societies. Dip in.

It's been discussed many many many times in recent years - how the westernisation of yoga has meant the beautiful, deep, meaningful practice has been taken over by predominantly privileged women of white backgrounds. Aside from the authenticity of the practice, how do we ( as a yoga community) ensure that the practices can be accessible for people who don't have money, who don't have access to big studios, or who don't even have access to running water and toilet facilities.....?

This is where Fierce Calm comes in. A charity, set up by Lee and his team, the organisation works to deliver and fund free yoga classes in shelters and community spaces to refugees, survivors of domestic violence, survivors of violence and conflict, and people facing systemic bias due to sexual orientation, income, age, racial or cultural identity. They provide trauma informed yoga teacher training scholarships for marginalised and / or minoritised ethnicity students. And, they lead the delivery of the OURMALA studio, community and online beneficiary yoga programme for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

Dharma Things, with George 'SEN1' Morillo; Lost Stories - the politics, security, opportunity and evolution of hip-hop...

SEN1 - George - is one of the original street artists of NYC. He was there at the beginning; a foundational member of groups of kids who started the various artistic facets of the hip-hop movement; lyrics, music, dance, art. Often overlooked in favour of the 'big money stories' and heavily branded fashionable reiterations of hip-hop that bought out and colonised the culture, people like George and his crew keep the flame alive within the community - it's true purpose. Making a living from his still graffiti-focused art, George has a real presence in the area he grew up in, using his skills to teach kids the economics and respect of the hip-hop culture. With a price on his head as a teenager, George watched the communities of NYC be taken over by Jewish money, violent gangs, and developers. This was such a great chat with him!

"If it wasn’t for hip-hop, I would be dead.", was actually said by MC Lupa, a creative and musician from Medellín, Colombia - an area with a life-expectancy for young men of 21 years old.. The work that Ruth's organisation does in areas in such conflict - whether that's gang-related or political - gives communities a voice, opportunity, hope. It gives them life. It's often thought that 'the arts' is some middle-class thing that parachutes into areas with big ideas and zero connection. In Place Of War is the opposite - no ideas and lots of connections. They work purely on conversations with local people, local voices, creative leaders and communities, allowing full access to their huge bank of people and funds as needed. Some great insights from Ruth, on what these communities face, the global connections they make with one another, and the multi-faceted beauty they create against all odds.

Bangs has lived around the world, experienced many levels of hard work, and self-deprecation, which makes her the perfect cheerleader for anyone needing reassurance that they belong, regardless of age, size, occupation.

"Joy is my nature and Smile is my birthright" is the motto. This is based on the ancient Indian Philosophy of Vedas, to discover Emotional Self-Sufficiency. The path is yoga, pranayama, meditation and contemplation through right knowledge [taken from Sudhir's Facebook page]. Sudhir Rishi embodies Dharma – he might not say so himself, but for a lot of people who have encountered him in life, he does. A man who has spent a lot of time investigating, learning about, and understanding himself before choosing which life path to take, he has globally-reaching empathy. In his session with us he talks through his journey, and a few pointers for us all to ponder when we face new beginnings.....

Who better to speak to about authenticity around Ayurveda and Yoga than someone who actually lives, eats, breaths the traditions because they were born in the 'right country' and spend their life working on the practices.... Enter, Namita, AKA Yoganama. The Yoganama philosophy is that yoga is not just postures on a mat but a combination of asana, pranayama, meditation, and constitution-based living. Yoganama is a wellness platform that brings the three key pillars of mindful living, Yoga, Ayurveda & Philosophy, under one roof. Founded by former banker and Yoga and Ayurveda lifestyle specialist, Namita Piparaiya, her objective is to make these ancient practices accessible and relevant to all.

As always, this chat has a few eye-openers, some really neat little gems of information, and new ways of thinking about using these traditional practices in modern life.

After qualifying as a teacher Adell very quickly became an 'Instagram yogi' with her athletic approach to yoga asana practice. But, she is a geek - an anatomy geek, a neurology student, researching everything she delivers to combine traditional practices with science. She also recently discovered she has ADHD, which explains a lot of her processes. Her bite-sized chat includes how habit stacking has helped her ADHD tendencies, eased the pressure she puts on herself, and made the 'to do' lists more manageable, and takes a brief but thought-provoking turn to look at authenticity and the modernisation of yoga.

Right!

In the first episode of Dharma Things, breathwork facilitator, licensed bodywork therapist and shamanic practitioner Steph Magenta talks through the importance of breathing, how it is completely life changing (more than just breathing to live!), the integration and integrity of breathwork, and that not so far-flung world of shamanism.

After growing through obstacles of addiction and abuse in her life, over many years Steph realised what the things were that were helping her heal, allowing her to look at her life with a greater degree of positivity, and reach for greater experiences. In this half hour chat, she discusses her journey, her love of the work, the depth of responsible shamanic and ancestral healing, and how we can all start to heal just through taking conscious inhales and exhales.
