<itunes:title>Vitaly Friedman Loves Techno</itunes:title>

It’s the season 4 finale and we’re celebrating at 150 bpm, when Vitaly Friedman joins us to talk about his lifelong journey through techno music. It all began in Belarus when, as a child, he discovered The Prodigy on cassette, continuing into his teens, that were spent obsessively exploring every possible musical avenue. Vitaly explains his preference for minimal, melodic, and "honest" techno over mainstream EDM, emphasizing his deep appreciation for the craft, passion, and commitment artists put into their work. He discusses how music serves different functions in his life, whether providing flow and calmness while working, or creating vivid, cinematic experiences at live concerts, and reveals his practice of continuously discovering new artists to avoid getting stuck.

Guest Bio

Vitaly Friedman (he/him) loves beautiful content and does not give up easily. Born in Minsk, Belarus, he studied computer science and mathematics in Germany. While writing algebra proofs and preparing for software engineering at nights in the kitchen, at the same time he discovered passion for typography, interface design and writing. After working as a freelance designer and developer for 6 years, he co-founded Smashing Magazine back in 2006, a leading online magazine for designers and developers. His curiosity drove him from interface design to front-end to performance optimization to accessibility and back to user experience over all the years. Vitaly is the author, co-author and editor of Smashing Books (https://www.smashingmagazine.com/books), and a curator of Smashing Conferences (https://www.smashingconf.com). He is the UX lead with the European Parliament and Smashing Magazine and front-end/UX consultant in Europe and abroad, working with large and small companies and organizations like Haufe-Lexware, Axel-Springer and others. He also runs Measure UX (https://measure-ux.com) and Smart Interface Design Patterns (https://smart-interface-design-patterns.com), friendly video courses on UX and design patterns, along with a live UX training for passionate UX and product designers.

Links

Vitaly on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vitalyfriedman

Amelie Lens at EXIT 2021: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80jdSJxZUAE

Amelie Lens — Live In the tunnel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1-Xc7EfT44

Worakls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXJawwVI03E

Paul Kalkbrenner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YPbpWeIx2Q

Extrawelt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryc3YudCYXU

Prodigy — Out of Space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4eav7dFvc8

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

We’re getting in motion with Sera Tajima, as she joins us to talk about her lifelong relationship with movement. She explains how ballet taught her precision, control, and the ability to withstand "good pain”, creating a meditative practice of syncing mind and body, that continued to martial arts. Sera’s athletic journey took a turn three years ago when she developed long COVID, forcing her to completely reassess her relationship with movement. Through her recovery process, she learned to listen to her body's needs rather than pushing through, discovering the importance of small daily movements. Sera continues to advocate for a cultural shift away from the tendency to treat the body as merely a vessel for the mind, and instead reconnect with it on a deeper level.

Guest Bio

Sera Tajima (she/her) is a product designer turned climate investor and advisor, bringing Silicon Valley growth expertise to founders solving our planet's biggest challenges. She's spent a decade driving growth at Y Combinator, Zendesk, and Webflow—achieving results like 200% acquisition increases. Through Conscious Tech Ventures, she guides climate startups scaling breakthrough solutions. Sera also has a course on sustainable growth. UC Berkeley-educated, Sera has spoken at Ikea, Uber, universities, and tech conferences worldwide, helping founders leverage product-market fit and product-led growth strategies. Her mission: Accelerate conscious tech that makes today's broken systems obsolete. We can't solve climate problems with the same thinking that created them.

Links

Sera’s website: https://www.conscioustech.co/

Sera on Spotify: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/seratajima/

Sera on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seratajima/

Sera on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@seratajima

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

Sidra notes the genre's diversity problem, as 95% of bluegrass concert audiences are white and significantly older, despite contemporary bluegrass artists becoming more diverse, and recommends modern acts that blend punk and rock elements into the traditional sound.

Guest Bio

Sidra Mahmood (they/them) is a government product and service designer who currently builds data products at the federal government of Canada. She describes how getting kicked out of ski school at age 12 led her to discover snowboarding, shaping major life decisions and eventually settling in Denver near the mountains. Jess reflects on how the once-rebellious snowboarder culture has evolved from being banned to becoming more integrated with skiers, and advises newcomers to embrace falling as part of learning, and not feel pressured to advance quickly or avoid beginner slopes.

Gotta catch 'em all! Including this episode, when Lex Lofthouse joins us to talk about her passion for collecting Pokémon cards. She’s been collecting them since they first came out in 1999, taking a break as a teenager, and returning in 2016 when Pokémon Go's release reignited her passion. Lex explains how the pandemic and influencers transformed the hobby from an affordable niche into a volatile investor market, making it increasingly difficult for collectors and kids to access products at retail prices. She talks about her collecting strategies, why she prefers slightly damaged vintage cards, participating in Pokémon tournaments, and encourages former fans to reconnect with childhood nostalgia by opening a single pack.

Guest Bio

Lex Lofthouse (she/her) is a Senior Designer at Nzime, a digital agency in the UK. She has been working in the design industry for over fifteen years, she began her career in the cold regions of Scotland and now lives and works in Nottingham. She specialises in UX and digital design but her skillset also includes branding and print design. She’s even semi-competent at some basic HTML and CSS but that's where she draws the line! Despite being a professional designer she has also gained an odd reputation as an advocate for Comic Sans, the world’s most misunderstood typeface. In her spare time Lex is a massive Pokemon fan and has been since its release in the UK in 1999.

Links

Lex’s website: https://loftio.co.uk/

Lex on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/loftio.co.uk

Lex on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bulbio

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

It’s time to Caps Lock in and Esc into another episode, as Tim Van Damme joins us to talk about his passion for designing mechanical keyboards. He describes how a pre-made keyboard that he customized by designing his own keycaps, ignited a passion for treating keyboards as both functional tools and artistic statements. Tim collaborates with a local CNC machine specialist to prototype and manufacture keyboards from raw materials like brass, copper, and semi-translucent plastics that age over time, prioritizing the honesty of the material over painted finishes. He finds freedom in the hobby's spectrum from boring, ergonomic designs to extravagant art pieces, and talks about how long it takes him to feel comfortable enough to overcome the small imperfections and use his own projects.

Guest Bio

Tim Van Damme (he/him) (you might also know him as Max) has been a software UI designer for over 2 decades at a wide variety of tech companies including Instagram, Dropbox, and currently Figma.

Happiness is a warm puppy, when Lauren LoPrete joins us to talk about her love of Snoopy. She describes creating "This Charming Charlie", a Tumblr mashup project combining Smiths lyrics with Peanuts comic panels that unexpectedly became Time Magazine's Tumblr of the Year. Lauren talks about evolving into an adult collector and curator focused on "Snoobies" (Snoopy bootlegs), valuing folk art interpretations and outsider artist reinterpretations, and explains her deep connection to Snoopy - viewing him as aspirational with his multiple personas representing the mask she puts on when feeling less confident. She views Snoopy as a reminder to loosen her grip on stress and embrace creativity and imagination, finding the character "heartwarming and whimsical in a world that lacks those things.”

Guest Bio

Lauren LoPrete (she/her) is a design systems specialist who's spent the last eight years leading teams at Expedia, Dropbox, and Block. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and comes from a multi-disciplinary background in exhibition design and book design before finding her way to design systems. She's known for being honest about the emotional toll of this work, including giving talks about burnout and why design systems act like a mirror to the organizations they serve. She lives on the west coast with her small family: Gus, a 15-year-old mutt, and her husband, an artist. When she's not thinking about design tokens or stewardship models, she's probably trying to convince someone that design systems are about people, not just components.

Links

Snooby Bootleg on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/snooby_bootleg/

Lauren on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/laurenloprete.bsky.social

Lauren on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurenloprete

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

He explains how the hobby, primarily centered around Games Workshop's Warhammer universe, encompasses building, painting, gaming, and engaging with the lore. After discovering an accessible painting technique, James began with low-stakes terrain pieces before progressing to more complex models, developing an unbroken daily painting streak over two years while continuously experimenting with new approaches. He discusses his evolution to more advanced techniques, emphasizing the importance of positive self-talk and his philosophy of doing one's best in the moment rather than pursuing perfection.

This episode is going downhill fast, as Chela Giraldo joins us to talk about her love of extreme longboarding. She describes her journey from discovering longboarding while working at a skate shop in Bogota, to becoming a competitive downhill racer who reached the top eight women internationally. Chela talks about the unique feeling of downhill longboarding as "flying just inches off the ground" - a moving meditation that combines pure adrenaline with total calm, and requires complete presence. She shares the story of the serious accident where she broke her femur, leading her to retire from competitive racing, only to return to casual skating mere months later. Through longboarding, Chela discovered her competitive nature, learned to trust others, and found a community that shaped her entire social world.

Guest Bio

Chela Girlado (she/her) is a Colombian senior product designer based in Austin, Texas, who recently joined realtor.com to work with their design system team.

It’s the season 3 finale, and to celebrate, Erika Hall joins us to talk about her unique artistic journey of painting chicken portraits. What began as a creative sabbatical evolved into an unexpected obsession, when she recognized that most of us take chickens for granted despite their dinosaur-like nature, and committed to painting individual chicken portraits that treat them as more than mere objects. Erika has grown the project beyond personal art therapy into a digital presence with a website and an interactive game where visitors compare chickens using random adjectives like "pedantic" or "rambunctious." Her chicken portraits serve as both a meditation on seeing overlooked creatures as individuals with distinct personalities and a broader commentary on taking time to truly observe and appreciate what we often dismiss as mundane.

Guest Bio

Erika Hall (she/her) is the co-founder of Mule Design Studio and Mule Books, and the author of Just Enough Research and Conversational Design, as well as the forthcoming The Business Model is the Grid. Her primary professional interests are design and communication strategy, collaboration, and evidence-based decision making. She is based in San Francisco and used to fly around the world giving talks, but now she does everything remotely and really only travels as far as she can ride her bike.

Links

Erika’s chicken portraits website: https://www.chicken.pics/

Clickens game: https://clickens.chicken.pics/

Erika on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/erikahall.bsky.social

Erika on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erikahall

Mule Design: https://www.muledesign.com/

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

      <itunes:title>Stéphanie Walter Loves Paper Crafting</itunes:title>

It’s sticker time, as Stéphanie Walter joins us to talk about her love for paper crafting. After starting with stickers, she “branched” to colorful (and deliberately unrealistic) paper plants, focusing on fun rather than natural accuracy. Since then, Stéphanie expanded into creating 3D projects including earrings and lampshades, working with vinyl, thin leather, and shrink plastic. She talks about her design style and inspirations, how she prefers to gift her creations rather than selling them, and tells us about "Crafternoons" with friends where they gather virtually to work on creative projects.

Guest Bio

Stéphanie Walter (she/her) is a UX Researcher & Strategist based in Luxembourg with over 13+ years of experience, specialized in enterprise UX, inclusive design and accessibility. She teaches, speaks, and writes about design, UX research, cognitive biases, and the design-dev relationship, among other topics. She enjoys good tea, bike rides, and drawing illustrations. Her D&D alignment is chaotic neutral, and she is better at keeping her teammates alive in video games than her plants, though she makes an effort.

Links

Stéphanie’s website: https://stephaniewalter.design/

Stéphanie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniewalterpro

Stéphanie on Mastodon: https://front-end.social/@stephaniewalter

Stéphanie on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/stephaniewalter.bsky.social

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

Bill criticizes the policing of authenticity within punk communities, and describes having a "meta-punk" approach where he sometimes deliberately went against punk norms. He rejects the nihilistic "destroy everything" attitude associated with some in punk, and instead talks about his appreciation for the sense of community punk represents for him, before recommending albums for newcomers to the genre.

Guest Bio

Bill Kurland (he/they) is a misfit. She introduces the different types of climbing (bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing), and talks about how climbing has become a way for her to confront her fear of heights. Katie discusses a serious ankle injury she sustained in 2023 while bouldering, and explains how returning to climbing after the injury was challenging yet therapeutic. She explores the problem-solving nature of climbing, and how that helps her achieve a near-meditative state. Katie also shares advice for people afraid of heights (like the host of this podcast), who are interested in giving rock climbing a try.

Guest Bio

Katie Langerman (she/her) is an interface designer specializing in design systems, currently contributing to GitHub’s Primer.

In the first episode of season 3, Karen VanHouten joins us to share her love of ’80s new wave music, a love that began in high school in the mid-1980s. She talks about discovering the music through friends, noting how it was "accessible enough, but different enough to make you feel a little special”. That juxtaposition of the dark and the beautiful in new wave music resonated with her, and made her a fan for life. Karen talks about music sharing in a pre-internet era, her time as a college radio DJ, and how the music scene fostered a sense of community. She ends with a list of essential new wave albums, recommended for new and curious listeners.

Guest Bio

Karen VanHouten (she/her) is an expert generalist and a curious skeptic who is committed to designing better ways for teams to work together. She loves messes of both the digital and human kind. She’s been working as a UX leader, a researcher, and a strategist in both the private and public sector, both in-house and as a consultant, for over 25 years.

It’s the season two finale and this week’s episode goes to eleven, as Joe Natoli joins us to talk about his lifelong passion for heavy metal music. From his earliest exposure to Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality at age ten, Joe reflects on the profound emotional connection and sense of identity metal gave him. He shares stories of scouring record stores, trading mixtapes with friends, and devouring music magazines to explore the growing metal scene in the pre-internet era. Joe also discusses the genre's theatrical aesthetics, the thrill of live performances, and the deeper messages in metal lyrics that often get misunderstood. The conversation goes into the diversity of metal’s sub-genres, Joe's favorite bands, and his own personal standards for what makes great metal.

Guest Bio

Joe Natoli (he/him) is a UX consultant, author and speaker. For three decades, he’s advised, trained and empowered the UX, design and product development teams of some of the world’s largest organizations, from Fortune 100 companies to U.S. Government agencies and startups. He has published ten books and is a regular keynote speaker and lecturer at industry conferences and corporate events across the globe. Joe has also taught more than 350,000 students through his online courses and his own UX 365 Academy, in addition to a private coaching practice. Joe’s approach to improving product UX and design focuses on addressing systemic and personal dynamics issues across individuals, teams and organizations: fighting impostor syndrome and increasing self-confidence, improving communication and collaboration, addressing fear and dysfunction driving poor management practices and redesigning inappropriate, counterproductive processes. Joe lives in Washington DC with his wife Eli and three kids, and he strives to be the person his dog Rosie thinks he is.

Links

The Hard Volume Experience Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNuc2kcwGbd_iJvc9-4YUKA

The UX 365 Academy: https://www.ux365academy.com

Joe Natoli's Give Good UX: https://givegoodux.com

Joe on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/joenatoli.bsky.social

Joe on Twitter: https://x.com/joenatoli

Joe on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joenatoli/

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

He also discusses the satisfaction of giving homemade bread as gifts, and how the tactile, hands-on nature of baking offers a refreshing change from his work at a computer.

Let’s take to the sky, as Ian Murchison flies us into the thrilling world of drone racing. He shares his background in racing remote control cars and how that competitive spirit led him to racing drones. Ian recounts his first race, the nerves he felt racing indoors, and how the drone racing community helps newcomers ease into the sport. He describes the complexities of controlling drones in 3D space, explains how tracks are designed, and emphasizes the balance between technical skill and competitive racing. The conversation also touches on his experience designing and building his own drones, and how it allows him to stay connected to building objects in physical space.

Guest Bio

With a background as an industrial designer and as someone who has made the switch from the physical to the digital world, Ian Murchison (he/him) has had the joy of working for some major brands like Blackberry and Nokia while also building up his own consultancy, designing, building and shipping award winning products globally. Ian’s work has crossed all scales, from products that are consumed by hundreds of millions, to newborn ideas without a customer in sight. Ian is currently a Principal Designer working on the design system team at Autodesk. Beyond the 9-5 Ian focuses on the outdoors, not hiking or camping, but he’s started his own hop farm, providing locally sourced ingredients to craft breweries. He spends countless hours cycling the countryside and, what we’re going to talk about today, competing in FPV drone racing.

Links

Ian on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ianmurchison

Ian on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ianmurchison/

Ian on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@ianmurchison

MultiGP drone racing league: https://www.multigp.com

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

Let’s travel into the third dimension with Amy Lee, as she shares about her journey of discovering 3D printing with an initial understanding of the technology as merely a tool to create figurines, and how it evolved, leading her to experiment with more complex items. She tells us of her fascination with the intricacies of 3D printing, including the steep learning curve, the challenges of designing 3D objects on a 2D screen, and the practical hurdles she encountered in her early projects. Amy also talks about how 3D printing has influenced her view of other aspects of life, and how this technology has opened up a world of possibilities for creating custom objects tailored to her specific needs, rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions.

Guest Bio

Amy Lee (she/her) is a design system leader who believes in the power of collaboration. She has created and led design system teams at large companies like Salesforce and DocuSign, as well as smaller startups. Amy believes that design systems can be a party where everyone is invited. Amy is also an engineer and a musician. She loves the process of creating things and wondering how to make things exist. She has no formal audio engineering training but has built two shipping iPad-based music-making apps. She'll be performing guitar live on stage; she has 4 more months to learn to play guitar. And lately, she's gotten pretty deep into 3D printing and CAD modeling–because why not. Amy lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and enjoys going for walks with her husband.

Links

Amy’s website: https://www.jumpingrobot.com/

Credits

Cover design by Raquel Breternitz.

Emilie discusses her first time traveling solo, and how that adventure has shaped her approach to life. She highlights the importance of adaptability in addition to planning, the joys and challenges of traveling with others, and her preference for quality experiences over quantity in her travels. Emilie also shares surprising destinations she's visited and her future travel aspirations.

Guest Bio

Emilie Mazurek (she/her) grew up thinking she wanted to be a doctor. She received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from University of Calgary, worked in a microbiology lab, wrote the MCAT, volunteered in Guatemala and even won two World Champion marching band titles. However, when the application cycle rolled around, she had more anxiety that she would be accepted rather than rejected–that’s when she knew something wasn’t right.

When she discovered UX Design it was like a lightbulb went on. After graduating bootcamp she landed a full-time, remote role in less than 3 months and was promoted to senior designer in just over a year.

In this inaugural episode, Pavel and I dig into the history and dysfunction of Agile, not to relitigate waterfall vs. Agile, but to examine why modern Agile practice has drifted so far from its original intent. We explore how the Agile manifesto was written entirely without designers in mind, how the "Scrum industrial complex" turned a flexible philosophy into a rigid checklist, and why two-week sprints often amount to waterfall in disguise. We cover the critical role of feedback loops, the danger of prioritizing outputs over outcomes, and why shared problem understanding is what teams actually need. We also make a case that good design principles are the closest thing we have to a genuine fix, because design is built around the kind of iterative, goal-questioning thinking that Agile always promised and rarely delivered.

Guest Bio

Pavel Samsonov (he/him) is a Principal Experience Designer at Justworks in New York. His approach to product & UX draws from his research at Nielsen Norman Group, experience building design practice at AWS, and managing product teams at Bloomberg.

Pavel often describes himself as a Problem Designer, because the biggest influence on the solution is always the framing of the problem.

Credits

Cover design by Kristine Planche (inspired by Raquel Breternitz).
