What if finding home worked a little like dating?

After spending 34 years in the smallest state in America, Rhode Island, I packed everything I could fit into my SUV and hit the road—living in different cities across the country and trying each one on for size.

There will be first dates, red flags, questionable decisions, great food, queer adventures, heartbreak, and hopefully a little chemistry. But the real relationship I’m exploring is with the places themselves.

I’m dating cities, lifestyles, communities, and different versions of myself—asking what makes somewhere worth building a life in and what it really means to feel at home.

Maybe I’ll fall in love with a place. Maybe I’ll fall in love along the way. Maybe I’ll end up right back where I started.

I don’t know yet.

That’s the point.

This is Dating America.

After six months of downsizing my life to fit inside an SUV, it’s finally time to leave Rhode Island. The problem? Right before I left, Rhode Island gave me the summer of a lifetime.

In the first episode of Dating America, I’m talking about the heartbreak that comes with choosing to leave a life you actually love—the friends, the familiarity, the memories, and the nagging question: Am I making a mistake?

Maybe Rhode Island is home. Maybe it isn’t. I don’t actually need to know yet. Nothing about this adventure is permanent.

But I’ve spent my whole life dating the same place. I think it’s time I see other people.

And so, Dating America begins.
