Comedy 101, now in its third season, features Millennial Comedy—a defining comedic movement shaped by economic uncertainty, digital immersion, social awareness, and a generation raised between analog childhoods and algorithm-driven adulthood. This episode explores how millennials reengineered humor through self-deprecation, irony layered with vulnerability, and a sharp critique of hustle culture, burnout, therapy language, dating apps, cancel culture, and the absurdity of curated online identities. Unlike traditional punchline-driven stand-up, millennial comedy often blends storytelling, cultural commentary, meme logic, and existential reflection, creating a style that feels conversational yet incisive. It dissects topics such as imposter syndrome, financial instability, mental health transparency, and the tension between authenticity and performance in the social media era. Season three analyzes how this comedic lens resonates globally because it articulates the quiet anxieties and contradictions of modern adulthood while still delivering sharp timing and relatable humor. Through this exploration, Comedy 101 positions millennial comedy not just as entertainment, but as a generational case study in how humor evolves alongside technology, economic shifts, and changing social norms.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Roast battle demands emotional intelligence as much as wit. Comedians must absorb insults without appearing rattled. Confidence amplifies humor. Composure under pressure often determines the winner more than the material itself.

We also explore the evolution of roast culture—from celebrity roasts to competitive formats popularized in comedy clubs and televised adaptations like Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle. These formats elevated roast exchanges into structured entertainment with global reach.

Beyond entertainment, roast battles reveal deeper comedic principles: tension and release, power dynamics, persona control, and audience psychology.

Comedy 101, now in its third season, features Borscht Belt comedy—a foundational era of American stand-up that shaped modern comedic timing, structure, and persona development. Originating in the resort circuit of the Catskill Mountains in New York during the mid-20th century, the Borscht Belt became a proving ground for Jewish comedians who mastered rapid-fire one-liners, self-deprecating humor, sharp observational wit, and tightly structured punchlines. This episode analyzes how the Catskills functioned as an incubator for comedic craftsmanship, where performers refined delivery mechanics, crowd work, and stage presence through relentless live performance cycles. We examine the influence of legendary figures such as Henny Youngman, Joan Rivers, and Mel Brooks, whose careers were either shaped or influenced by this circuit’s high-pressure environment. The discussion also explores how Borscht Belt humor informed the evolution of television variety shows, late-night monologues, and contemporary stand-up structure. From its cultural roots and socio-economic backdrop to its lasting imprint on comedic rhythm and persona branding, this episode delivers both historical context and performance analysis—demonstrating why Borscht Belt comedy remains a cornerstone in the architecture of modern American humor.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, now in its third season, turns the spotlight toward the legendary tradition of Borscht Belt comedy, the training ground that shaped generations of stand-up performers and rewired the mechanics of American humor. In the resort circuit scattered across the Catskill Mountains, entertainers worked relentlessly, sometimes multiple shows a night, learning timing, audience psychology, and the ruthless efficiency of the punch line. Venues such as Grossinger's Catskill Resort Hotel became laboratories where raw talent was refined in front of vacationing families expecting to laugh hard and often. Icons like Henny Youngman mastered the rapid-fire one-liner there, proving that brevity, rhythm, and persona could create explosive impact. This episode traces how that ecosystem produced durable techniques—setup compression, misdirection, and crowd calibration—that still underpin modern stand-up, late-night writing, and sitcom structure. By examining the circuit’s cultural roots, immigrant influences, and relentless performance schedule, listeners gain a practical map of how adversity, repetition, and community can forge comic excellence. Season three honors the stages, the sweat, and the lineage that continue to echo every time a microphone clicks on and a comedian steps into the light.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, in its third season, features dry humour, an exploration of the refined art of delivering comedy with subtlety, restraint, and absolute commitment to seriousness while the absurd quietly unfolds beneath the surface. In this episode, we examine how minimal expression, deliberate pacing, and precise word choice can create explosive laughter without ever announcing that a joke has been told. The conversation unpacks why audiences often respond more intensely when humor is discovered rather than displayed, turning silence, awkwardness, and understatement into powerful comedic tools. Through examples, analysis, and playful breakdowns, listeners gain insight into the intelligence and discipline required to master a style where the performer rarely breaks character. This installment celebrates the elegance of wit that whispers instead of shouts and proves that sometimes the calmest delivery produces the loudest reaction.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode explores how understatement can become the loudest punchline, where minimal expression, controlled cadence, and emotional neutrality create space for the audience to discover the absurdity on their own. Rather than chasing big reactions, deadpan thrives on precision, contrast, and the tension between what is said and what is felt. The discussion breaks down technique, rhythm, and the subtle psychology that makes this style so enduring across stages, screens, and generations of performers. Listeners will learn why commitment to seriousness often amplifies hilarity, and how silence, pauses, and micro-expressions can carry enormous comedic weight. By examining the mechanics behind the calm exterior, this feature reveals the craftsmanship required to make “doing less” achieve so much more.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, in its third season, features Pun Jokes, offering a deep and entertaining dive into one of comedy’s most deceptively clever forms. This episode explores how puns transform everyday language into humor by exploiting double meanings, homophones, and unexpected linguistic turns, creating jokes that are both simple and intellectually satisfying. Often dismissed as “groan-worthy,” puns actually require sharp timing, cultural awareness, and an understanding of how the brain processes language and surprise. From classic one-liners to modern wordplay woven into conversation, the episode highlights how puns have endured across generations, languages, and comedic styles. By breaking down why these jokes work and why they provoke both laughter and eye-rolls, Comedy 101 reveals that puns are not the lowest form of homour but one of the most universal, accessible, and enduring tools in comedy.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, now in its third season, features slapstick jokes as a celebration of comedy in its most physical, visual, and universally accessible form. This season dives deep into the art of exaggerated movement, precise timing, and playful chaos, where pratfalls, facial expressions, and unexpected mishaps become powerful storytelling tools. Slapstick comedy strips humor down to its essentials, relying not on dialogue alone but on rhythm, surprise, and the shared human experience of clumsiness and vulnerability. From the silent-film brilliance of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton to the bold physicality of modern performers, this season traces how slapstick has evolved while retaining its core appeal. Comedy 101 examines why audiences across generations continue to laugh at physical humor—because it transcends language, culture, and age, tapping into instinctive reactions and collective joy. By exploring the mechanics, history, and psychology behind slapstick jokes, this season highlights how physical comedy remains a vital and influential force in entertainment, proving that sometimes the simplest jokes leave the most lasting impact.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode revisits the 1987 original—an iconic product of its era, shaped by Cold War anxieties, hyper-masculine action cinema, and satirical undertones about media, power, and spectacle—while placing it alongside the 2025 reimagining, which reframes the story through a modern lens of algorithmic control, reality television culture, social manipulation, and mass surveillance. The discussion explores how each version reflects the fears, values, and technologies of its time, examining differences in tone, pacing, character development, visual style, and thematic depth. By comparing performances, directorial choices, and narrative priorities, Movie 101 Review highlights how the same story can evolve to speak to new generations while retaining its core warning about entertainment as control. Season Four’s exploration of The Running Man becomes not just a film review, but a broader conversation about society, media, and how dystopian fiction continues to mirror the world we are building.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, now in its third season, features an in-depth and engaging exploration of the history of knock-knock jokes, examining how this seemingly simple form of humor has endured across generations and cultures. The episode traces the origins of knock-knock jokes from early call-and-response traditions found in folklore and vaudeville to their widespread popularity in the early twentieth century, when timing, wordplay, and audience participation became central to comedic performance. It unpacks the mechanics behind why these jokes work so effectively, highlighting the importance of rhythm, repetition, anticipation, and the delayed punchline in creating humor. The discussion also challenges the assumption that knock-knock jokes are merely childish, instead positioning them as a foundational comedic structure that teaches essential principles such as setup, misdirection, and payoff. By connecting historical context with comedic theory, the episode demonstrates how knock-knock jokes have influenced stand-up comedy, children’s humor, and even modern meme culture. Thoughtful, entertaining, and informative, this installment shows how a joke that begins with a simple knock has continued to open doors to laughter for decades.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Comedy 101, now in its Third Season, delivers a laugh-out-loud episode centered on New Year’s Resolutions, unpacking the yearly ritual where confidence is high, expectations are unrealistic, and follow-through is optional. This episode humorously explores why gym memberships peak in January, diets mysteriously “restart” every Monday, and bold life goals quietly fade by mid-February. Through sharp wit and relatable storytelling, it captures the universal gap between intention and behavior, revealing how human optimism often outruns discipline. Rather than shaming failure, the comedy embraces it, turning broken resolutions into shared amusement and self-awareness. The result is a clever reminder that if we cannot keep our resolutions, we can at least laugh honestly about them together.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode leans into the universal experience of setting ambitious goals, revisiting last year’s promises, and realizing—often with a laugh—that human nature rarely changes overnight. Through clever observations and playful exaggeration, the jokes capture the contrast between who we plan to become on January 1st and who we realistically are by mid-January.

Leanne Linsky

Comedian & Entrepreneur (Founder/CEO of Plauzzable)

In 2001 I enrolled in my very first comedy class. Five years later, I packed two suitcases and moved to New York to pursue comedy full-time. I performed, produced, and hosted a weekly open mic for over 7 years and produced and hosted a weekly stand-up show in New York’s East Village. I wrote, performed, and produced my critically acclaimed one-woman show in NY, DE, and DC.

Eventually, I moved to LA only to find myself spending more time on the freeway than on any stage. I continued to perform and produce weekly shows (and even co-hosted a podcast for a few years!), but getting from show to show was time-consuming. As a performer, I needed more opportunities for a live audience, real-time feedback, and opportunities to earn money doing comedy.

In August of 2019 BC (Before COVID), I began experimenting with online open mics using existing technologies. Although many of those same technologies got us through a pandemic, they weren't designed for live entertainment.

I went back to school and earned a master's degree in innovation and entrepreneurship to learn how to scale my idea. As soon as I graduated, I was accepted into an incubator and Plauzzable was hatched.

More about Plauzzable:

Plauzzable is disrupting the fragmented comedy industry for comedians and fans. Plauzzable is a LIVE online comedy club. We provide comedians scheduling tools, virtual stages, ticketing services, and the ability to grow a worldwide fan base. These features give comedians control of their earning opportunities. For fans of comedy we provide access to a global talent pool and more personalized live online show selections and interactions.

Plauzzable

Join the comedy revolution!

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

<itunes:title>Comedy 101 in its second session, featuring the Art of Stand-Up: Turning Everyday Struggles into Laughter</itunes:title>

Comedy has always been a reflection of real life, and stand-up thrives on that principle. Great comedians often draw from everyday struggles, whether it’s waiting in line, paying bills, or dealing with family quirks. These moments connect deeply with audiences because they are universally relatable. Humor transforms frustration into shared laughter.

The art of stand-up begins with observation. A comedian must notice the small absurdities that others overlook. Whether it’s how people behave on public transportation or the chaos of grocery shopping, these observations become the seeds of great jokes. Comedy is built on the idea that truth is funnier than fiction.

Timing is everything in comedy. A well-timed pause can turn a good joke into a great one. Comedians often say it’s not just about the punchline, but the rhythm that leads to it. Timing allows the audience to anticipate and then explode with laughter.

Stand-up is deeply personal. Many comedians use humor to process their own hardships, from financial struggles to awkward relationships. By putting their vulnerabilities on stage, they create authenticity. Audiences laugh not just at the joke, but at the honesty behind it.

Everyday struggles resonate because they are universal. Everyone has faced awkward social moments, stressful workdays, or embarrassing mistakes. Comedy transforms these into something uplifting. Laughter becomes a shared release from life’s pressures.

Storytelling plays a vital role in stand-up. A comedian builds tension with detail and then releases it with humor. Stories about childhood, family dinners, or office mishaps become memorable performances. The audience feels drawn into the comedian’s world.

Hosted on Acast.
Creating a killer joke is both an art and a science—it’s about timing, wordplay, surprise, and relatability all rolled into one punchline. A great joke often starts with a strong setup that builds anticipation and leads the listener in one direction, only to twist the ending in an unexpected way. Understanding your audience is key; what makes one person laugh might not land with another. Whether you’re playing with puns, observational humor, or satire, the goal is to deliver something clever, sharp, and memorable. Like any craft, writing killer jokes takes practice, a good ear for rhythm, and a fearless sense of play.
Hosted on Acast. <itunes:title>Comedy 101 in its first season with Mr.Bob LeMent talking about tight five.</itunes:title>

In stand-up comedy, a “tight five” refers to a well-rehearsed, polished five-minute set that showcases a comedian’s strongest material. This brief yet impactful performance is essential for comedians looking to make an impression at open mics, auditions, or industry showcases. A tight five is not just about telling jokes—it’s about crafting a seamless, engaging routine that flows naturally from one joke to the next, maximizing laughs while keeping the audience engaged. The best tight fives have a clear beginning, middle, and end, with strong punchlines and smooth transitions that demonstrate a comedian’s style, timing, and comedic voice.

Developing a tight five takes time, requiring comedians to test material repeatedly, refine their delivery, and cut anything that doesn’t get consistent laughs. Every second matters, so jokes must be concise and impactful, with minimal filler. Many successful comedians, including those who later become household names, start by perfecting a tight five before expanding into longer sets. It serves as a foundation for their career, helping them land gigs, impress talent scouts, and build confidence on stage. Ultimately, a well-crafted tight five is more than just five minutes of comedy—it’s a comedian’s first step toward mastering their craft and making a lasting impact in the world of stand-up.

Hosted on Acast.
Crowd work in comedy is the art of engaging directly with the audience during a performance, creating a spontaneous and interactive experience. Unlike scripted material, crowd work relies on quick wit, improvisation, and a deep understanding of human behavior to generate humor in the moment. Comedians may ask questions, react to audience responses, or cleverly comment on their surroundings, transforming the audience into active participants in the show. This skill can create a unique and memorable performance, as no two shows will be the same. However, successful crowd work requires balance—maintaining respect, reading the room, and keeping the humor inclusive. When done well, it showcases a comedian’s sharp instincts and ability to connect on a personal level.
Hosted on Acast. Instead of cutting insults or sharp wit, participants engage in crafting heartfelt, metaphorical, or even humorous tributes to one another, often inspired by the symbolic elegance of a rose. This imaginative exchange challenges competitors to weave words that uplift, charm, and entertain, showcasing the power of language to spread positivity.
