Welcome to Circa 1945: Breaking the Machine.

This podcast asks one question: what would it take to genocide-proof a society?

Genocide doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s not just ideology, not just a single evil leader. It’s infrastructure — housing, food, borders, propaganda, segregation — the machinery that makes atrocity possible.

And just like a room can be baby-proofed, I believe societies can be genocide-proofed. If we study the years around 1945 — the years of the Holocaust, and before, and their aftershocks — we can learn how.

Sometimes I’ll explain things directly. Other times, I’ll tell a story, a parable. Stories carry truths that lectures can’t.

Updates Tuesdays

A podcast of parables about the Holocaust, and what it would take to build a genocide-proof society.

Today, I want to finally talk about ICE. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a government department that did not exist until 2003 and has recently expanded its operations in major cities. Demanding the “papers” of ordinary working people and detaining them without trial, simply over their real or suspected immigration status…well, that invites comparisons to the Gestapo even among casual observers.

But people are fighting back. What would it take to build a genocide-proof society?

Today, instead of telling you a parable, I want to take you on a journey with me.

This journey will take the form of a guided meditation. So relax, close your eyes if you like, and listen to my voice.

You see, I had a spiritual experience in summer 2025 that led me to Judaism, and eventually to my chosen purpose in life. But somehow every time I try to describe it to anyone, words fail to capture the essence of it.

But if I translate it into symbols and weave those symbols into a story for you, I think we can experience it together.

Let’s begin.

Image Source: https://stock.adobe.com/ca/images/illustration-of-human-body-in-meditation-pose-with-fire-flame-and-aura-emerge-from-body-shape-against-black-dark-background-generative-ai/563665441

Welcome to Circa 1945: Breaking the Machine — a podcast of parables about the Holocaust, and what it would take to build a genocide-proof society.

We live in a culture obsessed with true crime. Podcasts. Documentaries. Netflix series. There’s an entire industry devoted to exploring the “criminal mind.”

And you know what? I get it. Especially for women, especially for survivors — many of us have been hurt, or scared, or stalked, and the fascination makes sense. We want to understand predators. We want to make sure it never happens to us again.

But here’s the thing. After a lifetime of being hurt by not one, not two, but many different people, my perspective is very different.

Where others see endless variety, I see only a few basic shapes. Instead of telling a parable, I want you to close your eyes — unless you’re driving — and imagine something with me.

Imagine a stage. The air is heavy, the floor cold beneath bare feet. In the beginning, the people stand tall, shoulders squared, breath steady. The lights are soft, the music calm. But with each step, the bodies bend, the air tightens, the sound sharpens — until the dance collapses into silence.

Genocide is not sudden. It is not abstract. Genocide is a dance. Ten steps. Ten positions of the human body. Each one more bent, more burdened, more broken than the last. A choreography of cruelty, rehearsed over years, until the final silence falls.

Further Reading:

The Ten Stages of Genocide framework, enriched by ongoing critique and new perspectives, remains an essential tool in the global effort to learn from history and prevent its worst chapters from repeating. Your obligation isn't just to not push someone off the roof. You also have to prevent an accident.

People are going to be up there, and sooner or later, somebody will fall — unless you’ve taken precautions.

It’s a simple instruction, but it carries a profound truth: you are responsible not just for your own actions, but also for the structures you build, and for the harms you can prevent.

Studying the most evil times in history gives us understanding. And understanding is power, and freedom.

In the last episode, I told you a story about bread — how Germany’s strength was built on borrowed grain, and how hunger made conquest thinkable. At the end, I said the next story would be about refugees. About what happens when people flee hunger and violence and knock on the doors of the world, asking for safety.

Today’s parable is about hands. The most human thing we have.

Welcome back to Circa 1945: Breaking the Machine.

Last time, I told you about my two cats, and what their little turf wars can teach us about Lebensraum, ghettos, and the way scarcity fuels conflict.

Today, I want to tell you another story — a quieter one. It’s about two women, two pregnancies, and one name. And it shows us something fundamental about human beings: that under similar conditions, we often arrive at the same ideas, the same impulses, and sometimes, the same mistakes.

And this first episode is one of those stories.
