Parables are a valuable tool for making a quick, important point in a relatable way. Still, after just shy of fifty episodes, it's time for our last parable for a while...the story of the light switch, as a metaphor for interacting with complex machines.

Then, moving forward, I will introduce you to what I call my "Shoah Chorus."

Today’s story isn’t about 1945 directly.

It’s about something older and more personal:

how suffering becomes purpose —

without becoming destiny.

It’s also about Batman.

Yes… that Batman.

Stay with me.

Most people, on average, never consider what it means to have a country versus being made stateless. We live under a flag and take it for granted.

But studying history brings us face to face with what a nation actually is…and what happens when citizenship is taken away.

I want to start this episode somewhere unexpected.

Not with history.

Not with politics.

Not even with the news.

I want to start with a little cartoon.

There’s a character online called Tubby Nugget. He’s round. He’s gentle. He’s deeply earnest. And in one short video, he says something like this:

“Oof. I feel awful.

My body feels like it’s working against me.

So… I’m going to get better.

Out of spite.”

It’s funny. It’s cute.

And it stopped me in my tracks.

Because beneath the humor, there’s something very old and very serious being said.

Today, I want to finally talk about ICE. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a government department that did not exist until 2003 and has recently expanded its operations in major cities. Demanding the “papers” of ordinary working people and detaining them without trial, simply over their real or suspected immigration status…well, that invites comparisons to the Gestapo even among casual observers.

But people are fighting back. And that gives me hope.

This episode, I want to focus on the power of narrative storytelling as genocide prevention infrastructure.

There’s a reason so many Holocaust survivors have shared their stories.

In autobiographies, in the USC Shoah Database, in hours upon hours of documentaries. To remember is to understand, and to understand means to possibly prevent.

In that sense, we owe it to both the past and the future, to get it right.

With this in mind, I want to examine two very different examples of children’s fiction about the Shoah.

Not a historical moment, not a textbook, not a survivor quote.

A cat.

Well — a cat, and a vacuum cleaner.

An inside joke between two friends turned into a metaphor so precise,

I realized it might be one of the clearest ways to understand the psychology of authoritarian fear…

and what it takes to outgrow that fear.

Because sometimes, what looks like a monster is really just a loud machine.

And sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is learn where the plug is.

The question people write books about,

join cults over,

pay therapists to avoid answering,

and Google at three in the morning.

The question every stoned college freshman thinks they invented:

What is the meaning of life?

And because this is Episode 42,

we have to nod to Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,

where the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything…

is just the number 42.

Which is very funny.

And also, accidentally, very deep.

Because the real joke is:

“42” only means anything because we decided it does.

Today we turn our attention to something subtle,

something that rarely arrives with warning labels:

eliminationist rhetoric.

It doesn’t begin with open hatred.

It doesn’t begin with violence.

It begins with a dream —

one that uses all the right words:

freedom, liberation, justice, homecoming.

But the truth of a dream

lies not in its vocabulary

but in its engine.

And that engine often reveals itself

not in what the dream imagines for its own people,

but in what it imagines for the people standing next to them.

To explore this gently,

we begin with a parable.

Every time genocide comes up online, someone eventually says a version of the same thing.

"At least Thanos was merciful."

They mean it was quick.

They mean it was painless.

They mean it didn’t single anyone out.

Half of everyone. No hatred. No suffering. Just… gone.

And I understand why that sounds humane.

But today, I want to sit with an uncomfortable question:

What if the thing that makes Thanos feel merciful

is the same thing that made real-world extermination machines so effective?

There was a place built for one purpose only.

Not labor. Not punishment.

Just disappearance.

Its name was Treblinka.

This journey will take the form of a guided meditation. So relax, close your eyes if you like, and listen to my voice.

You see, I had a spiritual experience in summer 2025 that led me to Judaism, and eventually to my chosen purpose in life. But somehow every time I try to describe it to anyone, words fail to capture the essence of it.

After last week’s episode — one of the heaviest I’ve ever made — I want to shift into something gentler. Not emotionally gentle, necessarily, but structurally gentle.

Sometimes the best way to understand the machinery of violence…

is to look at a fictional world where that machinery has already won.

Today’s parable comes from a horror movie.

A gory, campy, vampire-apocalypse movie that, somehow, has one of the most hopeful endings I’ve ever seen.

It’s called Daybreakers.

And underneath all the blood and fire, it tells a story about scarcity, collapse…

and cure.

And today, I’m not telling you a parable. I’m not telling you a story about cats or chairs or Thor or Thanos. I’m going to tell you what happened to me this week.

The week that lasted a hundred years .

And what it taught me about the machine we’re all living inside.

This long, painful, clarifying week...I saw the Thanos Thread playing out not where I expected it, but in the place I once thought was safest.

This week, we’re listening for a different kind of signal — not a shout, not a slogan, but a frequency.

Because hatred rarely announces itself.

More often, it hums under the surface — in jokes, in phrases, in the words that sound harmless to some and threatening to others.

Today’s story is about those frequencies — dog whistles — and the people who have learned to hear them.

Every so often I stumble across a line so perfect it stops me cold.

⁠In the documentary "The Rise of the Nazi Party," author and historian Dr. Michael Lynch said:⁠

"Nazism was like a snowball. It flourished in cold, dark times. But you subject it to sunlight, and it will melt. The economy is the sun."

I wanted to hug him. Because in one sentence he captured everything I’ve been trying to explain for twenty-seven episodes: ideology is climate-dependent. When societies grow cold — economically, morally, spiritually — hate rolls downhill and gathers mass.

Today’s episode is about heat. About what it means to keep a society warm enough to stay human.

We live in a culture obsessed with true crime. Podcasts. Documentaries. Netflix series. There’s an entire industry devoted to exploring the “criminal mind.”

And you know what? I get it. Especially for women, especially for survivors — many of us have been hurt, or scared, or stalked, and the fascination makes sense. We want to understand predators. We want to make sure it never happens to us again.

But here’s the thing. After a lifetime of being hurt by not one, not two, but many different people, my perspective is very different.

Where others see endless variety, I see only a few basic shapes. Where others are fascinated, I’m… bored.

Let me tell you why.

Imagine a stage. The air is heavy, the floor cold beneath bare feet. In the beginning, the people stand tall, shoulders squared, breath steady. The lights are soft, the music calm. But with each step, the bodies bend, the air tightens, the sound sharpens — until the dance collapses into silence.

Genocide is not sudden. It is not abstract. Genocide is a dance. Ten steps. Ten positions of the human body. Each one more bent, more burdened, more broken than the last. A choreography of cruelty, rehearsed over years, until the final silence falls.

Today’s story is about a passage from the Torah that my rabbi shared with us recently.

When you build a house with a flat roof, the Torah says, you are obligated to build a railing around it. Your obligation isn't just to not push someone off the roof. You also have to prevent an accident.

People are going to be up there, and sooner or later, somebody will fall — unless you’ve taken precautions.

It’s a simple instruction, but it carries a profound truth: you are responsible not just for your own actions, but also for the structures you build, and for the harms you can prevent.
