1. Introduction: The Squirrel as an Urban Economist

In the sprawling urban laboratory of Schiller Woods, the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) acts as a sophisticated Urban Economist. Contrary to appearance, squirrels do not forage randomly; they are constantly balancing a complex "Calculus of Risk." Every seed they choose to consume or leave behind is a calculated entry in a survival ledger where every second of vigilance is a withdrawal from the squirrel's caloric bank account.

The physical manifestation of this decision-making process is the Giving-Up Density (GUD). In our field study, we provide a foraging patch—a tray containing 20.0g of sunflower seeds mixed into sand. The GUD is the mass of seeds remaining after the squirrel quits. This pile of "leftovers" is far more than waste; it is a precise data point representing the exact moment the harvest reward was no longer high enough to justify the costs of staying. By measuring what the squirrel leaves behind, we are effectively "reading its mind" to determine how it values its own life against its hunger.
