motor vehicular accidents only. A severe burn is,

undoubtedly, the most devastating injury a person can

sustain and yet hope to survive. In addition to the

fatally burnt children, a large number survive the burns

and have disfigurement, loss of function and physical

deformity leading to psychological sequelae. A burn

injury not only leaves the scars on the skin but also on

the mind. Returning to school and relating to their

peers and teachers requires a major psychological

adjustment on the part of the child. The parents suffer

not only monetary loss because of costly and lengthy

treatment involving extended time away from work but

also psychologically because they encounter great

difficulty in finding a suitable ‘match’ for their child at

the time of marriage. Burnt children account for almost

15 percent of all burn patients admitted to a large burn

center.
