Bookruptcy is a two-person book club that celebrates the act of reading, no matter how un-aesthetic our choices are.

Bookruptcy is hosted by Demetria Spinrad and Magali Ferare, two people who refuse to identify as "book people" in the modern social media marketing hellscape. Join them every other week as they talk books (but do not BookTok) and share their thoughts about whatever they're reading. Their tastes are varied, uninhibited by any algorithm, and run the gamut from award-winning litfic to highly obscure fanfic... to anything either one of them can convincingly argue is "a text."

Demetria and co-host Magali Ferare also cover the Discourse surrounding the book itself, the fascinating localization choices around one character's speech impediment, and the fact that Russian fujoshi are braver than the Marines.

On this episode, host Magali Ferare expostulates at length about Frankenstein (the novel), Frankenstein (the 2026 film), and why the former is infinitely more interesting than the latter in almost every way. We cover Victor's God complex, the work's Transcendentalist themes, and answer the age-old question: "Who is the real monster, Byron or Shelley?" Co-host Demetria Spinrad even manages to get a word in edgewise every now and then. Dive in with us!
