<itunes:title>Why Drama School Was My Secret Weapon For A Tech Career</itunes:title>

Are you stressing over your exams and worrying that making the wrong choice now will completely ruin your future tech career? If the thought of mapping out the next ten years of your life makes you want to hide, take a massive sigh of relief. In this incredibly fun episode of Behind the Future, we sit down with Mhairi Harris, a Senior Project Manager and Client Delivery Lead at ZeroLight, to uncover her totally unpredictable journey. Mhairi proves that finding your perfect job is rarely a straight line, and you absolutely do not need to have everything figured out right now.

Mhairi’s story is the ultimate plot twist. Originally, she had her heart set on heading to Oxford to study English and history, but she threw that plan out the window and went to drama school in Edinburgh instead! After three brilliant years of acting, and even going to New York to work with Stephen Sondheim, she realised that consistent acting roles were incredibly rare. She took on a massive mix of part-time jobs, from working in a chocolate shop to pulling pints in local bars, and even answering phones for a nursery software company. Eventually, craving the stability of a standard nine-to-five, she boldly applied for an after-sales role at G-Forces, a massive digital automotive company in her local area.

Despite having absolutely zero background in software or the automotive world, Mhairi hustled to stand out. Before her interview, she tracked down current employees on social media to figure out what the company actually did so she could be fully prepared. She bagged the job, turned up on her first day wearing jeans amongst a sea of corporate suits, and quickly learned the ropes. She started out solving software problems before moving upstairs to client services, eventually discovering that her super-organised nature made her perfect for project management. Today, she uses her skills at ZeroLight, a close-knit company of 55 people that builds mind-blowing 3D visualisation tools for huge car brands like Jaguar Land Rover.

Mhairi drops some brilliant truth bombs about why the communication and room-reading skills she picked up in drama school are secretly her biggest superpowers in her tech career today. She is the living proof that no experience is ever wasted and that making a decision at seventeen is not a "forever decision". Whether you are desperately trying to build an epic tech career or you just want to figure out your next steps after exams, tune in to hear why swapping your path, trying new things, and embracing the unexpected is the absolute best way to grow!

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

Are you feeling completely stuck on what to do after your exams? Kickstarting a successful digital career doesn't mean you have to go to university or sit behind a boring desk all day. In this episode of Behind the Future, we are joined by Josh, an Information Service Engineer in the Royal Corps of Signals, which is the cyber branch of the Army.

If you are feeling unsure about your next steps, Josh's story is incredibly relatable. When he first left school, he had absolutely no interest in technology. He actually started out by doing an apprenticeship to become a personal trainer because he loved fitness. However, he quickly realized that being a constant motivation battery for other people was emotionally draining, and a subsequent office job at a bank left him feeling totally uninspired. Wanting a perfect balance between physical activity and a solid professional path, Josh took a completely unexpected route and joined the Army to launch his digital career.

In this episode, Josh shatters all the traditional movie stereotypes you might have about the military. It is not just about running through the mud and getting yelled at. Instead, he travels the world setting up mission-critical communication networks for high-ranking officials. He explains how the Army is secretly one of the best places to learn and grow, offering an incredible alternative to university debt. Not only do you get a highly competitive starting salary from day one, but they actually pay for a seventeen thousand pound networking apprenticeship, provide elite technical training, and even send you on adventure courses to learn things like mountaineering!

Whether you are already a massive tech fanatic or a complete beginner who has no technical background, Josh proves that you can completely retrain and thrive. Tune in to discover why the Army might just be the ultimate cheat code for building a thrilling, debt-free digital career while exploring the world!

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

Are you feeling pressured to fill out your UCAS application and follow the traditional university route to start a successful marketing career? If sitting in a lecture theatre for another three years sounds like your absolute worst nightmare, this episode is exactly what you need to hear. In this episode of Behind the Future, we sit down with Helen Banyard, one half of The Good Stuff group, to talk about her incredibly wiggly path from answering phones to founding her own brand consultancy.

Helen's story is the ultimate proof that you don't need a degree to make it big. In fact, she decided uni just wasn't for her, leaving her girls' grammar school after Year 12 to finish her final year at college, whilst turning her Saturday job at Safeway into a full-time role. When she told her mum she wanted to go into advertising, she was met with doubt, but she didn't let that stop her. She secured a role answering phones and sending faxes at a small radio production office. By acting like a sponge, staying endlessly curious, and simply saying yes to every opportunity, she worked her way up from an account executive all the way to running an entire agency for seventeen years!

We dive deep into the reality of networking, which Helen admits she used to absolutely hate, especially the awkwardness of standing around a table of beige food. She shares a game-changing piece of advice that completely flipped her mindset: stop trying to talk about work, and just focus on making a friend. We also discuss why the soft skills you already have, like making eye contact, holding a conversation, and showing your true personality, are secretly your biggest superpowers when attending interviews or trying to break into the industry.

If you are stressing out about picking the perfect path or feeling lost about your next steps, Helen reminds us that you don't need to have your entire marketing career figured out right now. She didn't even realise she was officially a brand "strategist" until she was in her forties! Whether you want to build a lasting marketing career or just figure out your next move, tune in to discover why bringing your authentic self to the table is the ultimate secret to success, and why every random job you take is secretly building the exact skills you need for your future.

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

Want to launch an epic digital career but feel like you need to have your entire life figured out first? If you have always been the unofficial tech support person for your parents, you are absolutely in the right place. In this episode of Behind the Future, we sit down with Mike, the Search Strategist and founder of Tangible Digital, to talk about his incredibly relatable journey from school side-hustles to running his own successful SEO agency.

If you are currently stressing about your exams and feeling the pressure to get perfect marks, Mike’s story will definitely make you feel a whole lot better. Even though he runs a tech and marketing agency today, he actually admits that his absolute lowest grade at A-Level was in IT! Instead of letting a grade define his future, he leaned into his natural entrepreneurial spirit, which started by buying cheap sunglasses and selling them to his classmates for a profit.

Mike breaks down exactly what SEO (Search Engine Optimization) actually means and shares how he truly learned the ropes. He didn’t just read textbooks; he literally built his own messy website selling fidget spinners. Through trial and error, he learned how to buy domains, secure hosting, and even order stock from China. He explains why putting an imperfect project out into the world and making massive mistakes is secretly the ultimate cheat code for building a highly successful digital career.

We also dive deep into the reality of AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Mike explains how teenagers today can use them to build websites from scratch without knowing how to code, but he drops a major warning about why you can't just blindly trust a robot to do all your work, because AI is notorious for being confidently wrong. Finally, Mike shares incredible advice on why you shouldn't rush to be a founder right out of school. Tune in to discover why joining a great company to learn the ropes, taking the pressure off yourself to be perfect, and unapologetically bringing your true personality to the workplace is the ultimate secret to winning in your digital career!

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice. Whether you want to work in video games, marketing, or tech, stepping into the professional world can feel incredibly daunting. In this episode of Behind the Future, we sit down with Rob Murray, the Head of Talent Acquisition at Push Gaming (and formerly PlayStation!), to get the ultimate insider secrets on how to stand out and get hired.

If you are currently stressing over A-levels or worrying about whether university is the only path to success, Rob’s story will put your mind at ease.

Are you dreading the constant pressure from teachers and parents to figure out your entire future? Building a successful digital career doesn't mean you need to have a perfect ten-year plan mapped out right now. In this episode of Behind the Future, we sit down with Terry May, the founder of Marqeting, a specialist PPC and performance marketing agency, to talk about his incredibly unpredictable journey.

If you are sitting in class right now and absolutely hating school, Terry’s story will make you feel completely understood. He couldn't wait to leave school after Year 11. Instead of a traditional academic path, he studied music at college, trained as a chef, worked exhausting late-night bar shifts, and even spent years giving careers advice to disadvantaged students. It wasn’t until he was in his early thirties that he combined his passion for gaming with networking on LinkedIn to secure an apprenticeship. This leap of faith ultimately launched his successful journey in marketing.

In our chat, Terry breaks down exactly what paid media and PPC actually mean, explaining how they help push products to specific audiences online. More importantly, he explains why he absolutely despises the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?". Terry believes you should stop worrying about the absolute final destination and just focus on taking your next step. We also dive into real-talk about how to make your CV genuinely unique instead of just copying a standard AI template, and how to quiet the imposter syndrome that everyone faces.

Tune in to discover why every random hobby or part-time job you have right now is secretly building the transferable skills you need. Whether you want to start a digital career or just figure out what to do after your exams, Terry proves that it is never too late to pivot, change your mind, and follow your passions!

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

Are you stressed about university and wondering how to build amazing digital careers? Take a deep breath, because this episode proves that you don't need to have your entire life figured out at 16, and sometimes the untraditional path is actually the most fun!

Host Becky Simms and Year 12 student co-host Daisy chat with Beth Puxley, Affiliate Development Manager at Holiday Extras. Beth shares her incredibly relatable story of dropping out of university halfway through her second year because the boring routine of a 9 AM seminar and a 5 PM lecture just was not working for her.

Instead of panicking, Beth went with the flow. She shares the hilarious story of how she applied for her first tech agency job simply because she liked the look of the ball pit in their office! Even better? She had absolutely no idea what SEO or PPC actually meant during her interview, but her personality and drive won them over anyway. Fast forward to today, and Beth has traveled to 22 countries in a single year, all while working full-time, and now negotiates major partnerships in the travel industry, sometimes even while riding a Ferris wheel at Dreamland!

Beth explains why people skills, adaptability, and networking are actually way more valuable for modern digital careers than a perfect exam score. We also chat about how students can use AI as a secret weapon to prep for job interviews, and how getting an adult ADHD diagnosis helped her understand her super-powered brain.

Beth's biggest piece of advice for students is simple: do not wait for the perfect moment and do not let school pressure you into rushing your life. There are so many fun, unconventional ways to launch successful digital careers!

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

Welcome to another episode of Behind the Future, the podcast created to help you navigate the wild world of digital careers before you even leave school. In this episode, our host Becky and co-host Dylan, an A-level student currently smashing Politics, Computer Science, and Business, sit down with John Harvey, the Head of AI Operations at Capita. If you are sitting in class wondering if you actually need a degree to work in tech, or if you're worried a robot is going to take your future job, this is the conversation you need to hear.

John shares his 24-year journey within the same company, proving that you don't need to jump ship to level up. He started straight out of school doing "manual" work in a data centre, think printing payslips and moving physical backup tapes, and worked his way up to leading a team of developers exploring the cutting edge of AI Operations. He breaks down the "Iceberg Model" of technology: while everyone is obsessed with the "cool" AI tools on the surface, his team manages the massive infrastructure, security, and data governance that keeps the whole world running.

What You’ll Take Away From This Episode:

- The Truth About Degrees: Learn why John chose to work straight after his A-levels and why he believes a "growth mindset" is more valuable than starting with a degree.

- How to Build a "Wow" Portfolio: Discover how building your own "proof of concept" or a working demo can impress a CEO more than any CV.

- Mastering "Vibe Coding": Get the lowdown on how to use natural language to build app prototypes in a single day to test your best ideas.

- Why Soft Skills are Your Secret Weapon: Understand why being able to explain complex tech in "layman's terms" to a team of 35,000 people is a total superpower.

- How to Handle Failure: Hear why John actually embraces failing exams as a way to learn the material even better.

- Choosing the Right Company: Tips on how to spot if a company actually lives its values or if they’re just written on the wall.

Whether you're into Computer Science or just want to know how to manage your future "virtual team," this episode of Behind the Future is your ultimate guide to AI Operations.

Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell so you never miss a career deep dive

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice.

In this episode of Behind the Future, we’re hanging out with Thomas Redgrove, the founder of Thomas Cookie Co, to find out how he turned a massive sweet tooth into a legendary business. If you’re a student thinking about digital careers, Thomas’s story is the ultimate proof that you don’t need a boring office job to be successful. He shares how he went from the Navy to working "lost" in sales roles before finally taking the leap to bake the best cookies and cookie cups you’ve ever tasted.

Thomas breaks down how digital careers are actually built on being adaptable. When the world changed in 2020, he didn't quit; he pivoted, using Shopify and Facebook ads to move his business from 95% physical stalls to a massive online operation. For anyone interested in content creation, Thomas explains the logic behind his viral s’mores video that hit 1.2 million views. He reveals that "content is number one" and shows how a small-scale brand can reach a global audience with the right digital strategy.

This conversation is loaded with real-talk for the 16–17 age group. Thomas gets honest about "feeling the fear" when hiring staff or buying expensive gear, and why he views every mistake as a massive lesson. Whether you want to master e-commerce, run a viral social media account, or just turn what you love into a career, this episode is your blueprint for the future.

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice. He also shares inspiring stories of students who, through Zero Gravity, gained the confidence, guidance, and support to secure places at Oxford and Cambridge.

Whether you’re a student dreaming big, a parent supporting your child, or simply curious about how talent can be recognised and nurtured, this episode is packed with insights and actionable advice. <itunes:title>Indy Bhogal: From Intern to Director at an Iconic Brand</itunes:title>

This week on Behind the Future, we sat down with Indy Bhogal, Associate Director of Digital at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, to hear how a university student placement turned into an 18-year career at one of the world's biggest brands.

Indy didn’t get where he is today by following a rigid plan. In fact, he admits he never set out to work in digital communications at all. Starting out as a multimedia design technology student at Brunel University, he applied for a year-long placement with his friends and landed a role at Coca-Cola. On paper, the job sounded uninspiring, but Indy turned it into something much more. He proactively knocked on doors, started conversations, and offered his skills in design, animations and websites. By making himself visible, having conversations with people in the office, and keeping in touch with colleagues even after his placement ended, Indy created opportunities for himself. That proactive mindset, combined with a willingness to take every chance he could get, transformed his career - eventually leading him from placement student to digital director.

In this episode, Indy shares why talking to people is the most underrated skill you can build, and how being proactive can open doors in any workplace. He talks about the importance of relationships in a company of 40,000 employees, why "just being around" can matter more than you think, and what it's really like working at Coca-Cola.

If you’ve ever wondered how to stand out in a big company, make the most out of a work placement, or why conversations can transform your career, Indy’s story will leave you motivated to get out there and start talking.

Behind the Future is a podcast for the next generation of digital talent, offering weekly interviews, real-world insights and career advice. In this episode of Behind the Future, Lucy Hall, founder of Digital Women and SocialDay, shares how she went from teaching herself digital marketing as a teenager with no computer at home to becoming one of the UK’s leading voices in digital skills and community building.

Lucy didn’t take the traditional route. She started selling products on eBay, taught herself HTML, built websites, and even became one of the first sellers to make eBay listings look professional with custom designs. That spark turned into a passion that grew into multiple businesses and eventually Digital Women, a thriving community helping thousands of women upskill for the future of work. Her mission to help the next generation feel confident with digital skills.

Lucy Hall’s journey proves you don’t need perfect grades or the “right” background to build something incredible.
